Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - March 22, 1875, Winnipeg, Manitoba The Pacific route. The agitation upon Tho Pacific rail Way route is not confined to this portion of the Dominion. The people of Ontario like a Good Many of those of Manitoba Beem to forgot that the Pacific railway is to be built with Dominion Money and that therefore in the arrangements Dominion interests must supersede All others. Aco temporary puts it wisely in the following " the ques Tion to be settled is what in cheapest shortest and most use Ful route from tide water to Titio water everything else is to be look Tho province of Quebec. Not Only can be prevented but no truly patriotic Canadian would wish to prevent it even though he could. So much is this Felt that government help is to to extended to what is a local work in or Der to connect the real Eastern terminus of the Pacific railway with the tide water on the St. Lawrence. But As a Large portion of the traffic which i pass Over this National Highway will naturally seek an outlet for transportation to Europe by the Gulf of St. Law rence so another position will As Mitti rally seek an outlet to and through the states by Tho present Ontario Linos which Lead in that direction. To facilitate Whitt natural outflow will therefore to the duty of the Central government. We have not Tho slightest idea that on Tario is injured by the main Lino being put far to Tho North or in Tho georgian buy Branch coming out at the i Reuhl -4 k n _ y i Chance Fob Bailo Ains in the subscriber having purchased Tho entire estate and business of it. Rail toy from his is Ignea at such sett of As to finale him to place the of hardware olc., on the Market at prices fully As Low a importing and As it is his intention to close it entirely out begs to cull the attention of country merchants parties equipping for the Interior Farmers Millers builders surveyors Railroad and Telegraph men de on As merely subordinate. If that question is honestly fearlessly and wisely answered and the answer acted upon ultimately it will to Best for All however much in Tho meanwhile pet schemed May be thwarted expectations brought to How Tho people of Toronto Hamil ton and other places in Ontario have taken it into their hands because Tho faithful carrying out of this design gives Ottawa and Montreal some local advantages that they have a right to complain. In accordance with this meetings have Boon held in Tho first mentioned places to denounce to government scheme As regards that por Tion of the route passing through on Tho Tario. A Hamilton paper formulates Trio Vance As follows it is understood that the Dominion government will postpone the con Tion of Tho Eastern Section of Tho Oana 1 jul j la l Ca i t River. This arrangement on Tho contrary will do More to open up Ami even Tual v to Settle a very Largo District of our province than any other plan which could to mentioned. It will make an other trunk Lino at a suitable distance from our first Steht across Tho country and will thereby bring population and a Market where would otherwise for a Long time to Solitude this will to an advantage of no Ordinary description and nov High will Benefit All who it will injure none. To connect that line which has its terminus at French hirer with the Ontario system of railways will be an undertaking neither very formidable nor very costly but Witiw Ono which very evidently is As necessarily n part of Tho Pacific scheme As that to which to have already referred As connecting Tho Eastern terminus with the Seaboard. 1 com to Gravenhurst there would be a distance of not More than sixty or eighty Miles and it is in no spirit of local selfishness but from a de sire to Sec the Enterprise a Success that we say that connection must be made. For a Largo amount of traffic Tho natural 1 i-., i 1 r at i a Vars on government account mul the general Trade to the facts above stated Asho can sell buyers on oven find t it at. Lull us luvs j Dian Pacific railway till Tho other portions Are Eastern Section be that Between Thunder Bay on Lake Superior and the South East Corner of Lake Nipissing utilizing in the mean time the splendid water communication Between Thunder Bay and French rivet on Tho georgian Bay. They pro Poao immediately to construct what is called Tho georgian Bay Branch of the Cana Dian Pacific from Tho Mouth of French River to a Point near Lake nip Ling where the future terminus of the . Main line will be looked. They also propose a subsidy sufficiently Large to ensure construction contemporaneously with the georgian Bay Branch of a line from its terminus eastward to Jien Trew the it Stock the Stock on the Canada Central railway. Northern colonization railway the will also make connection with Tho Siisi died line. Route will thus he established Between Tho Eastern and the Northwestern provinces by the Domin Ion government and doubtless operated by them As a through line. The Dominion government do not intend to Aid any Lino from Lake Nipissing to the Southern and Western portions of those most prominent in the agita Tion intimate that the government should terminate Tho Pacific at Lake Nipissing and allow the different pro Vinces to make their own arrangements to secure connections. In this View they denounce both the construction of the georgian Bay Branch and the government project of subsidizing a line to connect with the Canada Central. The extreme selfishness of this position is apparent at a Glanco. Tho government must provide a through route from Ocean to Ocean having due regard to its shortness and Chat Panesa. To utilize the Canada Central for this purpose is Wise. Therefore to ask Tho abandon ment of to much of Tho scheme As refers to this is in our opinion unreasonable. But we think that those who Content themselves by accepting things a they Are in this respect Only asking that Aid should be furnished to make connection with Tho railways cer Norci Al centres of Ontario Are not unreason Able. From Tho Globe to select the Fol lowing which we think puts the Case very Tho ultimate terminus of the line for n certain kind of traffic must be in j j it 1 pm 1 in v in i i i v outlet we have said in evidently Mont real. With that we do not in Tho slight est wish to interfere. But it is equally evident that for another part Tho Natu ral outlet is by the Luke Ontario ports. Whatever the Dominion government May do connection with these must be secured. With such a trunk line running across the Northern part of our province the Opportunity att re cd to construct a network of roads from Lako Ontario to the Ottawa is very inviting and our local government we have no doubt will not be backward i extending help to any Enterprise of a feasible character. The whole of West Ern Ontario in interested in the construction of a line communicating with the Pacific Road. Exactly How much government Money can to secured for Tho work cannot perhaps now be ascertained. It is for our railway men to organize a Strong company and bring Tho Cairns of the route before the Ontario Ali Stock the Stock to be found in the in full lines of ovary Kiwi fancy mul Staple. If it can be shown that Ontario will have enough of local Benefit from the East and West line and ought in fairness to build the North and South link her self we shall cheerfully submit. We no undue for Ontario in the location of the Lino or in the Man Ner in which it is to be construe Ted. All that can to desired fair play and that Are persuaded Tho ministry at Ottawa is prepared to Render. It is absurd merely of Toronto or of Hamil ton or of any other local Point and to gauge every proposal by its supposed influence upon the traffic of particular places. Of Tho other hand we Are not to be deterred by the fear of being charged with the weakness of provincialism from pointing out what duo to one important Section of country and to Ono very marked and Over Widen ing Channel of Trade which who always be in a Southern direction through on Tario just aft another current will Al ways and equally to direction towards Tho Quebec.
