Prohibitory it is announced that prohibitory liquor Law convention is to to hold at Montreal on the 15th september to Dis cuss in All its varied features the pre sent movement to secure a prohibitory liquor Law Lor the Dominion. The invitations to this convention Are so Cri Oral As to include All who Lake any in Terest in the cause of Temperance throughout the Dominion. Those who can attend and take part in Tho deliberations arc mob Iberson Tho Dominion and local Legislatures All ministers of re Ligion All members of any municipal bodies lodges societies or associations desiring to Advance Tho cause. Tho United kingdom Alliance will have a Delegate present and a number of distinguished americans who have been prominently connected with Tho pro. Hibi tory movement in Tho United states will also to present. Tho proceedings will to opon to the Public so that All who take any interest in this great ques Tion can be present As spectators. Every measure seems to have been taken to make Tho gathering As representative and influential As possible and should Tho proceeding be conducted with prudence much strength May be gained and Progress a Nap in a right direction. The question of the absolute right of Tho representatives of Tho people of a country to enact a prohibitory liquor Law is now almost unanimously con ceded. The general admission of this rights of itself a great step in Advance and Tho strength and popularity Avrich the agitation for a prohibitory liquor Law has already acquired in Tho Domin Ion and elsewhere is most encouraging. Let us Hope that this agitation will go of till the statesmen of this and other lands Are forced to grapple with Tho question finally and effectually. It is Al ready acknowledged by the most prominent and influential statesmen and newspapers that it is from a political Point of View Tho matter has now to to regarded and it is mainly for Tho Pur pose of considering it in this Light that Tho convention has been called which meets in Montreal on Tho 15th septem Ber next. Tho people of Manitoba and Tho North West have a special interest in Tho convention and its deliberations. Tho manufacture and Sale of liquor is already prohibited throughout the great Lone land except that speck of it known As Manitoba. Tho Dominion has thus prob ably the largest territory in the world throughout which the manufacture and Sale of intoxicating liquor is prohibited successfully enforced by Tho executive. The March of civilization is so rapid in the North West that it requires special efforts to keep liquor which seems to to its constant accompaniment everywhere out of the country. This is owing in a great Mea sure to Tho facility with which liquor can be obtained in this province especially in this City of Winnipeg. Who would not desire to see this whole North West country including the province of Manitoba dedicated to Temperance and prohibition so desirable no object could Well to accomplished we 5 Eliover and we Trust that the coming Conven Tion will give some attention to methods by which Tho ground already gained in Tho North West May to retained and Tho province of Manitoba reclaimed and added to the territory wherein the Sale and manufacture of liquor has Al ready been prohibited by 1mv. Wore a prohibitory liquor Law in Force in Mani Toba Tho outlying territory whore it is already in Force would to Safe but so Long As the liquor traffic continues in this province there is great danger that it will spread throughout Tho entire North West and become in Tho near future uncontrollable. What is wanted now is prohibition in Manitoba and if the convention can devise a scheme by which it can to accomplished they will have obtained the key to Tho North West and thus securely dedicate Tho fair est portion of this Broad Dominion to prohibition. Even in this City to believe a majority of the ratepayers would be willing to Force the capital and time devoted to the liquor traffic into other channels. It requires not much argument to persuade our people that the time consumed by those who handle liquor in this City would be better employed in making t ots of lot.
