Saturday August 28, 1815. Indian affairs. Tho gentleman who reports to us that the indians at fort Alexander were summoned there on the 22nd of july by or. Commissioner proven Hor to Roccio their annuities that up to the 15th of August the commissioner had not made his appearance and that the indians wore starving to death and have been quite but for Relief afforded by the Hudson s Bay company is Ono in a those word to have every reason to have Confidence. Our inform ant describes a very similar state of things River. There fore while wholly at a loss to account for such a state of affaire to cannot Dis to Ieve. Assuming that it is As stated it is a serious matter. Not Only is it inhuman to Call a lot of indians to Gether and our of the Way of their Ordinary sources of and thus expose them to the dangers of starvation but it is dangerous in Tho extreme. It was precisely this sort of thing that brought about Tho celebrated and Hor Ribio Minnesota massacre of 1862. In Dian agents made appointments with the indians just As or Provon Chor is said to Havo done failed to keep them also As it is reported to has and the indians soon found themselves in a state similar to what to Are told the indians at fort Alexander and Broko head River now arc. As to have intimated before in these columns Tho Indian expects the White Man to keep his word absolutely and any delinquency in this respect is fraught with danger in pro portion to other attending circumstances. To wish to to understood not As saying positively that matters Are As re ported but we Are strongly inclined to believe them so. If they Are As to fear immediate attention is required to pre vent disastrous consequences and thorough investigation should follow to guard against a recurrence. This suggests to us that within a Short time our attention has been called to several Little matters in connection with Indian affairs in this country that have at least part a Facie bad complexion. It is not Long since that our notice was culled to specimens of Domican and flour alleged to have been served the indians with which they were very much Dis satisfied and really we should say not without Good reason. These samples Are still by us and a glance at them is sufficient to Force us to Tho conclusion either that the government must authorize supplying indians with very cheap stuff or that they did not got get what the government intended and for aught to know pay for. If we wore correctly informed upon this mat Ter and to think we were Lieut governor Morris received a protest on this account from the indians to whom these thir is were dealt out. And to May remark in passant that this Little circumstance has had much to do with our late objections to the Lieut governor being employed with Indian matters. We do not suppose that to has anything to say in the selection of the Indian gratuities but Tho recipients can scarcely be expected to understand this. So Long Long As he plays big White at Tho treaties and annual payments nothing is More natural than that the indians should Lay nil their grievances before him As they always believe in going to Tho Fountain head if possible and if they know where it is. And we take exception to or Morris having to do with Indian affairs because he is lieutenant governor of Manitoba and Tho province not being in a Point of fact responsible for anything in this connection to doom it very inadvisable for any person so directly associated with provincial concerns As the Lieut. Governor to become complicated in what terminate very unpleasantly. A novel Gas Well. An esteemed correspondent writing from port Huron on tuesday last says that on the saturday previous or Joseph Hahn who lives in a Small place called Cottrellville not far from port Huron was engaged in sinking an Artesian Well for the purpose of supplying his Stook with water and used for that purpose a Derrick consisting of three pieces of Timber fastened together at the top in the shape of a tripod. This Der Rick was fastened by Means of a heavy log Chain wound around the timbers at the top attached to which was an Auger forthe purpose of Boring Tho Well which was turned by horse Power. The first portion of the Well for a distance of Twenty feet had been carefully bricked up and the Borin continued from there. Tho is fifteen inches and on monday night Tho Auger had penetrated distance of 125 feet. The next morning a gae chamber was Pene upon the removal of the Auger the wooden tubing shot out of the Well immediately followed by a Stream of Gas water mud and stones that Rose to a distance of nearly 200 feet in the air while the ground Shook As if an earthquake and convulsed it. Stones weighing from ten to Twenty pounds were projected in the air and fell in All directions some of them crashing through the roof of or Hahn s House and barn and compelling his family to seek another habitation. The heavy log Chain binding the Derrick was Cut by the flying missiles into a dozen pieces and the farm upon which a Stone could not Havo Boon found previous to this phenomenon was literally covered with Largo and Small ones. The velocity of this discharge continued for eight or ton hours without Tho monster was found to have spent its fury and the Stream and noise gradually subsided. The crops of or Hahn were completely destroyed by Tho fal Ling debris and the streams of water which ran in All directions. Many peo ple visited the Well and Many Aro still coming and or Hahn to restore As nearly As possible his to is a poor enclosed Tho Well within a rail Fence and charges the Rodor Atesom of five cents for the satisfaction of individual curiosity. The water still bub bling May be soon at a great depth by the Aid of a Mirror which reflects the Sun s rays into its Depths. One remarkable fact is that the Brick Wall of the first Twenty feet of theadoll is entirely uninjured and remained intact during the great convulsion. Tho orifice below however is somewhat enlarged. It is not apprehended that to shall Havo another eruption of this minature Vesuvius. Lots of lots. A bargains. A. W.
