Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - November 11, 1875, Winnipeg, Manitoba Education. To the editor of the bks a Bess. In a former communication i pointed out to Noce sooty of adapting the studies of children to their future Avo cations. In Tho train of my thoughts on education Tho vouchers come next into consideration. It May to reason ably objected that Tho to actors of com Mon schools Are not with Lew exceptions competent to teach such branches As i included in Tho requisites Ofa practical education. For instance very Low com Mon school teachers understand Mathe Matics beyond common arithmetic. In the meantime it must be admitted by any person who knows any thing about the merits of mathematics that a know ledge of them is of Groat importance to Tho Mechanic to understand his Busi Ness. To encourage therefore the teaching of this useful science should be largely Tho object of the Eua Clois of our school Laws. The most feasible Means of carrying out this object would to to induce Tho teachers by pecuniary compensation to study these More u.dvanc-1 of blanches Ard ii Lily themselves to teach them to their pupils. It is Gener ally admitted that teachers Are Tho poor est paid class of people in the Community. Their duties Are arduous and important. Yet if Tho scanty pittance which is generally allowed then for their services to taken fora criterion one is naturally led to Tho conclusion that Tho estimation in which their ser vices Are not at All in the interest which enlightened people should have in Tho cause of Edu cation. No person of in turn of mind would Over think of ing his life in teaching school for Tho pay that would to allowed him for his Sei vices. Young men while engaged in teaching Aro Ever on Tho Lookout to bet ter their positions. As soon us an Opportunity of doing itself they abandon Tho role of teachers and raw recruits step into their places who in Sui with their predecessors. Thus experience which. I need scarcely say is As much required in teaching As in any other Lino of business in to a la to Diablo extent estranged from our schools and that animus of improve Montc in Tho teacher which Tho interests of education so imperatively demand is lost in indifference through Tho want of being fostered and Erco urged. But i do not advocate increase of teachers salaries without duo regard to their qualifications. In this respect our school system is susceptible of great improvement. Sto provision is made to Harp Tho teachers salaries pro portioned to their classes. Tho Power is loft to the trustees of driving the cheapest bargain can with the teacher. As a consequence a teacher of the lowest class has a Chance of getting As Largo a pay As of Tho highest class. In treating of Educ action from my present standpoint Tho Justice duo to As might to said on that nothing to do with my Pur pose. My object is to show that Tho do feet in our school system As above described militates to piously against its Best interests inasmuch As no induce ments Aro held out to the teachers to raise their Standard of qualifications with a View to effect a much called for Reform Tho teachers salaries should to fixed by Law proportionally to Tho classes into which they Aro divided Buch a step would inspire the teachers with increased interest in their a desire of imn Rovo ment which would give a wholesome impetus to Tho Success of our system of education. .
