Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - November 22, 1875, Winnipeg, Manitoba Acl toss t1ie continent. General Selby Smyth s tour. Accounts of the Progress made by Gen Selby Smyth on his tour of inspection of the military forces in the Western part of the Dominion have from time to time been placed before our readers. A few weeks ago we announced the general s Safe arrival at Victoria British Columbia and his subsequent return to Ottawa via san Francisco. The following letter from a correspondent of the Toronto supplies the account of the trip from fort Tui Toni to the Pacific after settling everything satisfactorily at fort Carlton where it will be remembered there were some apprehensions of Trou ble Gen. Smyth sent the mounted police Back to fort Polly leaving however twelve men and six horses at Carlton to keep the peace. Leaving fort Carlton on 6th August the general proceeded to fort Pitt where he arrived on the 12th, passing through a very rough and broken country and intersected by several rapid on the 13th Victoria was reached. This was a settlement of half Breeds and old Hudson Bav officials in All about thirty Humilius. The party left on the same Day for Edmonton and passed through a country intersected by deep and very dangerous swamps thro which the waggons were dragged with the greatest difficulty. At Sturgeon Creek a delay of a Day s duration occurred. This Creek was deep and rapid and found to be so that Trees had to to felled for the purpose of constructing a raft on which to Cross Over. On the same morning As this Creek was crossed the passage of the North Branch of t lie Saskatchewan was also most Friendly manner with the pie ans Gen Smyth advanced As rapidly As possibly and passed through the Kootenay pass to save great expense to the Dominion government and As he had also to Confer with Gen. Hop per Gen. Smyth proceeded to Walla Walla Washington territory and after settling matters regarding the preservation of the peace along the Border he proceeded to port Townsend and thence crossed to Vic l Toria. Effected at a new police Post about 18 Miles i family. As May easily be supposed this horrors of the insurrection. Sissoko correspondence Manchester guardian. There was a Stalwart Burly priest from a neighbouring Village who was a native of bos Nia where he had been in charge of a Parish but obliged to flee for his life. His Story throws much Light on the Savage nature of the life led in Bosnia both by mos lems and christians. One Day during the Harvest when he was employing some Twenty men to get it in and he was just about getting his dinner a moslem appeared in the Yard Ai med to the Teeth and asked for one of the workmen. The cure enquired what he wanted him for. To shoot was the reply to has Stolon an Apple and cursed my the cure told him to to Oft and seek his remedy in a Law court. Thereupon the moslem quietly cocked Liis gun and fired at the cure who Only just escaped by a Quick movement behind the window took Down his gun in turn and shot the aggressor dead. So far Good. But now the cure s blood was up and calling his men bade them build a Bon lire. Then stripping the moslem he rub bed him All Over with greatest possible indignity for a pitched the body into the fire. Of course he had to Fly for his life and the Parish was obliged to pay a Fine of ducats to the Man s tie Bank paid the value making a Deduc Tion for the deficiency of weight which is generally about 3d or 4d per Light Sovereign it was stated to the committee that boxes of correctly weighed Gold sent by the Bank of England to Scotland frequently came Back having , Palm there is then some reduction for Light weight. He explained this by adding that the Mere shaking of the sovereigns on the journey will make a slight Dif Ference. There is a Point at which every Sovereign becomes Many sovereigns turn that Point on the journey. Or Hodg son m. P., a Bank director stated that in a Box of sovereigns the number which would be found to have turn the Point would generally be about eight if they had not been disturbed and he added Are aware that the Sovereign which is in your pocket at 8 o clock in the morning is not the same Sovereign at 12 o clock at after this rather alarming announcement it is satisfactory to find or Hodgson stating also that the charge for Light weight on the eight deficient sovereigns would be about 2d per Coin making Only id on the Box of so that says he it really amounts to North of Edmonton. There was no Timber to to seen except along along the Banks of of the rebellion now and i shall not be sin Sturgeon Crook to within 40 Miles of Edmonton but the country was very Rich in pasture in fact the grass was rank. The country too was covered with wild Vetches suitable for cattle. There Woro a Groat Many swamps. These Are very injurious to horses producing Hoof disease in fact they suffer terribly from it in this Vicinity. Edmonton was reached on the the general did not visit the Post As he had All the inform cure is one of the most energetic supporters Tion he required in to it but Havins procured the necessary proceeded due South to Buffalo Lake Over the Vil est roads and Ozir swamps. At ked Deer Kiver the general found a troop of mounted police awaiting his arrival. This Force had Corrie Here to await orders in Case they were required at fort Carlton where As before remarked some disturbance of the peace was expected. After inspecting the Force the general ordered Thorn to Swift Creek on Bow Iziver where a new Post has been established. From red doer Kiver to Bat the and Bow Livors tiie country is Beautiful Rich and exceedingly Well adapted for settlement More especially along both Banks of Battle Kiver. On the Way to Bow Olivcr the general s party fell in with 200 Black feet indians under the command of old who has attained an unenviable prised to near that he has become one of the leaders. In the Early Gray of morning the insurgents who had descended from the chief Range towards the save were joined by seventy five men from the austrian All set off together to fall upon the turkish Block houses along the save and All the turkish houses and posts in the Eastern Angle formed by those two Rivers. The turks were surprised nearly All Mas sacred and their Block houses and dwell s burned. The insurgents had one killed and seven wounded Tho turks Twenty seven killed some Burnt in the houses and Many Many they could not Tell to. I expressed Surprise that so Many turks should be killed and so few insurgents. Thereupon one of the insurgents got fetched a bag and out of it took a ghastly head and Laid it on the table. Lie said and Twenty six Are on the other Side. To Morrow we shall have a this was a startling Way of verifying an assertion and j must confess that i had to seek Refuge in a cup of Coffee till i had regained my equanimity. Meanwhile the head glared at me and seemed to Pio teat against the company. I said do you think that this ferocity will Ain. A j j. And four other chiefs what May have to in revolving in old Crowfoot s mind As to the value of Tho general s Scalp will Likely never be known but to appeared to be very much pleased and All the chiefs were very urgent in their request that the general would Camp with them but Tho request was politely but firmly the journey Onci More resumed for Bow i Mouth. About ten Miles from Bow River they overtaken by Crowfoot who. With All the rest was dressed in paint leathers and blankets. Five of the chiefs spent the nig with the party and had a talk round the Council fire. They professed great Admira Tion for the mounted said they were Fine Fellows. Gen. Smyth Speaks Verv highly of those Blaek for and says that old Crowfoot said that he was sorry that the roads were in such bad order that next year they would to attended to. indians were off to Hunt the Buffalo. Contrary to the general opinion they were Verv civil and polite and few would believe that Crowfoot s disposition was so soon changed the indians departed professing Friendship for the general. Bow River was crossed with difficulty on account of the rapidity of the current. The River was i oulds wide and very deep. Two men were nearly drowned from the swamping of a raft. Along was a Beautiful Prairie country and there was nothing to be seen to correspond with Tho great a Humboldt Plain of Tho u s Indence they Rode to the South Point of the Lori Irmo Hills where col. Mcleod established his Post in old Man s settlement. I a latest maps of the country even that of were found very inaccurate Linese maps Are those published under the authority of the Dominion government this remark is applicable to the position of Lorvi clod and whoop up or Hamilton. At 1-Ort Mcleod the Post and the mounted Lolice Force stationed there were inspected and found satisfactory. Leaving his staff at a Mcleod Gen Smyth proceeded 240 Miles due South to fort Shuw.
