Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - November 25, 1875, Winnipeg, Manitoba City and provincial news. Tub North West Council sat Liis after noon. With a View towards furnishing music for Winter entertainments a string band has been organized in the City. We be Lieve they grind out very Good music. Reporter is. Provis ional battalion of infantry were interred this morning in the roman Catholic Ceme Tery St. Boniface with full military honors. The Garrison band came next but owing to the Frost the musicians instruments were unserviceable and the sol emn strains of the dead March were accordingly not performed. The coffin contain ing the remains of the deceased came next upon a gun Sleigh drawn by two artillery Drivers. It was covered with the Union Jack surmounted by. The Cap and sword of the dead sergeant. The staff sergeants of the Garrison were the pall bearers and the remainder of the troops followed As mourners. On the procession reaching the Cathedral of St. Boniface the firing party and mourners accompanied the remains in to the edifice where the impressive funeral service of the Catholic Church was performed with every musical portion being rendered with much effect. The cof Fin was then conveyed outside and lowered into the grave. The firing party fired three volleys and the bugler sounded the Salute Over the grave after which the troops re turned to Barracks. Victoria skating opening. A skating rink 150 feet by 50 feet is rather a Large affair but the Victoria link which is of the size indicated not an Inch too Large last evening on the occasion of its opening. The gallery was jammed the dressing rooms were packed the plat forms impassible and the ice was crowded. There were Good skaters and bail skaters skaters who never ran against anybody and skaters who were always poking their Heads into other Peoples breadbasket skaters whose equilibrium was perfect and skaters who passed most of the time sitting on the ice skaters whose movements were Graceful and skaters whose contortions were the reverse. There were merchant princes floating about on the Glassy there were their festive clerks acquiring muscle and complexion there were ladies gracefully gliding there were City officials too much pressed with business to remove their pens from behind their ears there were Dominion govern ment officials mapping out railway routes in Graceful curves on the ice there were pin sons illustrating that the righteous some times stand on Slippery places there were representatives of All sorts Sixes and sexes of humanity and All seemed to enjoy them selves to the utmost. The military band was stationed in a Little Alcove at the rear and enlivened the com Pany with some Fine selections. The rink is most commodious most comfortable and in every respect Complete and generally tip top. There Are ladies and gentlemen s dressing rooms cloak rooms Coffee rooms ticket office gallery and Baric stand All admirably heated while the whole affair is brilliantly lighted. The proprietors of the rink deserve the Best Success and if the opening night is any indication they will not Lack Patron age. Emerson.
