Tolu from the Peterborough ont tikes. We regret to have to chronicle the death of one of our oldest residents or. John Robinson Benson who died from the effect of internal inflammation on saturday nov. 6th. Lie was not Only connected with the past history of the country As one of the earliest pioneers of this District but also with its future As having assisted materially in opening up Means of Access to our great North West. He had won the esteem of the Public by his Energy ability and pub Lic spirit while he was endeared to his family and intimate friends by his goodness of heart and cordial interest in their Wel fare. His death leaves a void that will Long be Felt. Or. Benson was born in Fintona county Tyrone Ireland on the 7th of a gust 1805, having thus reached his seventy first year. He came from new York where he had a Short stay to upper Canada in 1s19, and in 1828 he arrived at Peter Borough which was then a comparative wilderness. Run 1832 he married the Only daughter of or. Moore Lee. Or. Lee with or. John Hall father of the late judge Hall also came to Peterborough from new York in 1s28, both being originally from county Cavan Ireland. When they arrived Here they formed a partnership and bought the grist Mill then known As the govern ment Mills besides other lands and they also started a distillery and general store. Or. Lee also bought lands further to the rear extending up the River beyond the present Sito of the Hilliard s Mills and West Ward to the top of Smith town Hill. He died in 1835, when his business passed into the hands of or. Benson. At a subsequent period or. Benson withdrew from the store and aimed at developing the water Privi Leges which he held but by the burning Down of Mills which had to be replaced with new ones and the breaking away of dams his losses were heavy. At the time of the red River expedition or. Benson was occupied in opening up a Road to Winnipeg and he took the Voya gems whose services received flattering recognition from colonel Wolsey. He thus bore his share in opening up the North West of Canada and had much Faith in its future greatness. For a number of years he held the office of Coroner for this county and up to the time of his last illness was an Active member of the town Council. To was also an officer of militia being a colonel in the Reserve militia of West Peterborough. His Captain and adjutant s commission bears Date 1837, and he was promoted to be major in 1s4s, and lieutenant colonel in i. Or. Benson leaves a widow and ten children four sons and six daughters be sides grand children. Three of his daughters Are married respectively to or. G. Douglass Bell of Philadelphia or. Treville of Winni Peg and or. John Green of Peterborough. Three of his sons Are residing at Winnipeg and one at Orillia. He was a twin son the other brother Henry having died last year in Australia. Three Brothers survive him the Hon. James r. Benson senator of St. Catherines William Benson collector of customs at Windsor and Joseph w. Benson m.d., formerly Dean of the faculty of the medical College of Louisville Kentucky and now holding a similar position in Chi Cago. To has also a sister married to or. Dickson of Kingston. He was interred in the family lot in the Little Lake cemetery. The town Council attended the funeral in a body As a Hist tribute of respect six of them acting As pall bearers and the remainder following behind the chief mourners. There was also a Large attendance of sorrowing friends and the stores at the time of the procession were generally closed. The Hudson s May company. A recent English paper says the report of the governor and commit tee of the Hudson s Bay company states that since june last when the proprietors were informed that the Canadian govern ment intended to enter upon negotiations with the company for the Purchase of the bulk of their lands the committee had had personal conferences and communications with the prime minister of Canada on this important subject and they had hoped to have been Able on this occasion to report the result of the negotiations. They were however still in such a position that a Dis Cussion of the matters involved would be in expedient at the present moment. As regarded the Trade of the company the barque Ocean Nymph had arrived from York factory with the returns of the coast and neighbouring posts which compared Favora Bly with those of last year. Several shipments of furs from the Northern department had also arrived by steamers from Canada by which route the remainder were being sent. The Trade of the Western department continued to show Good the Strong Competition against which the officers of the company had to contend in that Quarter. The furs from this a portion of those from Canada were sold As usual Early in the autumn when prices declined considerably from the High rates obtained at the corresponding Sale in 1874. The Steamer Northcote had been successful in reaching Edmonton from the Mouth of the Saskatchewan a distance of about Miles. She delivered a Large cargo of goods at that station and returned in safety with furs and to grand rapids near Lake Winnipeg. Another Steamer named the Colville had been plying Between grand rapids and red River keeping up the communication with the Saskatchewan Steamer by Means of which the officers now Felt themselves in a position to conduct the transport service of that important Section of the country in a More satisfactory manner at a moderate to introduce improve ments in the communication with the More northerly districts. In consequence of the depressed state of business in Canada generally and in the United states the company had not any sales of their own lots at fort Garry this season. The committee re commended an interim dividend of 8s per share to be paid on the 8th of january. It leads to lieu a. Under Date of May Lith the Herald of Helena Montana says the Pioneer Railroad from Chicago to Omaha and one of the favorite routes is the Chicago North Western. The Road has always been Well patronized by Montan ians and in turn the company for a number of years has kept standing advertisements in the Helena dailies and continuously in the if Urald. To demonstrate the Enterprise and Prosperity of the Chicago and North ave Stern Road we mention the fact that the company has just had completed at their shops three new of six bag Gage three postal six second class and three smoking cars together with twelve coaches and three new Pullman sleepers for Omaha and California line. These new trains will be Complete from engine to sleep ing car and will be called the Silver Palace trains. The Iron work on the platform rail Ings and on the Interior will be heavily plated with Silver and there will be an unusual amount of this work displayed from the exterior of the cars. These cars will be run on the daily express trains and will be the handsomest Ever run on any Road in the you always want the Best of everything that is to be had. In travelling of course you prefer to go by the quickest Best Short est and safest route to the East. To get these combined in one line you must buy your tickets via the Chicago and North Western transcontinental Overland route. It is the shortest quickest and Best route from Omaha , new York Boston Philadelphia and All Points East. The track is of the Best steel and All the equipments Are first class. The fastest time of record. This Road has the with its trains for a Long continued run that has Ever been in this country. On its Atlantic express route Between Omaha and Chicago it has run 138 Miles in 142 , and so smooth and Good is the track and so comfortable Are the cars that the passengers declare that had they not known otherwise by anything they could Tell by the movement of the cars they should have thought they were not travelling More than Twenty Miles an hour instead of nearly a a minute. This statement tells the whole Story and must convince the most sceptical that this is the Best Road there is in the West. Two trains daily leave Omaha for Chicago by this route and so Light Are the grades of this line so few the curves and so Good is the Road bed and equipment that if Neces sary forty Miles an hour could easily be Over the entire Road. If you have never been Over this Road you should certainly give it a trial or if you have not been Over it for a year or two you should now go that Way and see for yourself How Fine a Road can be by using steel fails and other modern improvements.
