Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - November 27, 1875, Winnipeg, Manitoba Inc a july f m saturday nov. 27, 1875. A portion of to Day s Ottawa Telegram will Peculiar interest to our presbyterian readers. It is generally known that the presbyterian Union effected last summer was not absolutely unanimous. A few held off. And some time afterwards Kev. Messes. Gavin Lang and Simpson the leaders of the anti unionists through counsel or. D. Me master applied before or. Justice Mckay at Montreal for a writ of injunction restrain the Board for the management of the tem moralities. Fund of the presbyterian Church in Canada from transferring that fund to the management of another Board. On novem Ber 3rd or. Justice Mckay gave the follow ing order in having examined the petition of eve. Gavin Lang his affidavit in support thereof and having examined the exhibits filed in support of the petition Etc and having heard the petitioners upon the application for a writ of mandamus in the nature of a writ of injunction by his counsel or. Mcmaster it is ordered that a writ of injunction do Issue addressed to the said defendants ordering them to take no proceedings at the special meeting of the Board of the corporation called for the 4th xov., inst., or at any adjournment thereof or at any other meeting of the Board that May be hereafter held to divert or alienate the tem moralities fund of the presbyterian Church of Canada in connection with the Church of Scotland of the value of from the objects contemplated by Tho statutes origin ally constituting it and the defendants Are enjoined to maintain hold and administer the said fund and All interests and accounts thereon solely for the Benefit of those Mem Bers ministers and others of the presbyter Ian Church of Canada in connection with the Church of Scotland who on the 15th of june last maintained their connection with the Church of Scotland and who have not dissolved their connection therewith or seceded therefrom until Tho issues raised by the present action shall have been finally disposed of or until it shall for cause shown be otherwise ordered and it is further or dered that the defendants to summoned to appear before the Superior court in the City of Montreal to answer Tho said petition and the present order on the Lith novem Ber inst., at eleven o clock a. M. Costs to abide the final Issue of the suit this of. Factually prevented any attempt at trans Ferring the to the presbyterian Church in Canada till the lawsuit Between the Rev. Messes. Lang and Simpson and the Temporali ties Board As to who had charge of the funds was ended. This the Telegram informs us has come and that unfavourably to the anti unionists. Insinuations. The following Telegram from Winnipeg appeared in the Ottawa free press of the 16th november petitions Are circulating praying for the dismissal of Stewart Mulvey from the in land Revenue department. Mulvey was an appointee of the Macdonald government. Llis Active interference in politics has Ren dered him distasteful to the people Here. A recent article in the newspapers abusing i Mackenzie is said to have been written by Mulvey at the instigation of certain enemies of the Dominion government. The petition will be forwarded to or. Mackenzie this in every single particular with exception of or. Appointment under the Macdonald government the message is an untrue one. To the Best of our knowledge there is no petition circulating Here to the disparagement of or. Mulvey. He is not distasteful to the people Here and if we Are to consider him responsible for every Anonymous article appearing in the newspapers to the prejudice of Hon. Or. Mackenzie we shall have to shift a Good Deal of such responsibility from More August shoulders not a Hundred Miles away on which More than Tho Bare suspicion of such a Burden now rests. Or. Mulvey s reticence on poli tical subjects has since his appointment to office been a marked feature of his conduct. His care and attention to his official duties have been most creditable to him. He has Given the Public every reason to be satisfied with him both in Point of urbanity of Man Ner and desire to do Justice. Were every government official such As or. Mulvey the Public service would present a much higher Standard of efficiency than it does and the conduct of certain prominent officials in assimilating itself to that of or. Mulvey would exhibit a marked improvement and con Duce to the credit of the government of which or. Mackenzie is the head As Well As their own personal Comfort the City 1loan. Elsewhere we publish a letter from or g a. Simpson upon the question of the City loan. Or Simpson s letter evolves nothing new he what has been repeatedly asserted before that was sind reproduces the Hacky ried argument that Winnipeg is to be compared with other municipalities. of this been too frequently exposed to Call for extended reference " we cannot refrain How Ever from reproducing what has already appeared in these columns that fully applies we have before us explicit information regarding the loan lately affected by the City of Ottawa. Six percent Twenty year Bonds exactly the same As ours Goti ated at ninety six while ours were robbed off for Eif Futy and a half. Moreover while in rate and time the Ottawa and Winnipeg debentures , those of Winnipeg Are better in every other respect. In the Case of Ottawa this to 000, is a fourth while in the Case of Winni Peg it is the first. The total assessment of Ottawa is and its four issues of debentures amount to one seventh of its value while the total assess ment of Winnipeg amounts to and its one Issue of debentures to under one tenth of its value. Peg debentures Are very considerably better actual Security than this last Ottawa in the face of this fact or Simpson would have us take his a very particularly inter ested party word for that our Bonds were sold at a fair rate l it. Would be much More convincing were or Simpson to accept the Challenge we put up in tins respect Long other instance in which first municipal Bonds to the extent of less than ten per cent of the assessment Susji As ours have been negotiated at anything approaching such Low rates As when or Simpson or some person in his behalf responds squarely to this May Bogon to think otherwise than at present. Again we have or Simpson s word for it that the amount of si0, about is a modest amount of. Brokerage. We will also ask him for. A precedent for a rate of upon so heavy a. Transaction As the Winnipeg debentures in would have the people of Winnipeg believe that they Are under obligation to him for getting them without Security. The popular understanding Here is that the amount was obtained against the Deposit of our Bonds in the merchants Bank. He was Foreman for thirty six years in Montreal for the late Louis Perrault sons. Guibord performed the difficult task of putting the Indian language into Type for the Issue of a catechism and hymns published by. 1 , and Ming the matrices.
