Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - December 6, 1875, Winnipeg, Manitoba The speech from throne at the of Ejai ing of the Ontario legislature is accepted by press As .containing., Eyer thing that could reasonably be expected. Some hint however that it might have included a Well considered measure for compulsory voting. Assistance to railways promises to engage considerable attention during . in this Point a to temporary thinks the railway legislation of the present session will need the careful direction of a firm hand and shrewd head. A few powerful corporations will bring great influence to Bear and unless the govern ment is careful the appropriations will be excessive. Unfortunately there is an opposition not Over scrupulous ready to fall in with any disappointed applicants for assist Ance if by so doing support can be diverted from the ministry. The country is pretty Well agreed non the propriety of judiciously pushing railway construction into the in torpor of the province to open up new territory for settlement and to make connection with the Canada Pacific. Ever it has been shown that the opposition will stand ready to cry out when the Money appropriated is paid Over. The old Story of wasted surplus has not done its work the Eastern the utterances of All our Best informed exchanges upon this matter Are of a Char Acter indicating that a crisis is at hand. That Russia is desirous of taking advantage of Turkey s present trouble to realize her object of securing the territory of the sick and that England has cause to be apprehensive on this Point is a confirmed opinion shared in by All. England it is reasonably asserted dreads the interposition of a Power so formidable As Russia Between herself and her Indian possessions. The Globe generally admitted on All hands that if Steps Are taken by the other great Powers to expel the. Turks from Europe England neither can nor ought to interfere Protection. Theh presence North of the bosporus is not essential to the preservation of her communications with India. It is different with Egypt. The construction of the canal has diverted the bulk of the traffic from the Cape route and it is absolutely essential to England to have that canal controlled either by herself or some Friendly Power. It is a noticeable coincidence that just when the Stern necessity for action in that direction is pressing upon English statesmen it should be announced that the British government Lias purchased from the Khedive of Egypt his interest in the canal. By this Purchase if it is ratified by 1-arhament, England comes into posses Sion at once of nearly half the shares and the policy of Purchase will evidently be Pur sued until a majority of them Are held by the government which will then be Able to exercise Over the institution a perfectly legitimate control. But the Possession of the alone would not suffice to secure the route to India. Hence the growing feel in favour of appropriating Egypt. One thing appears to be certain if Egypt cannot be relied on As an ally then it will be seized As a Possession. Such at least is the tone of the press and such appears to be the View of the statesmen. It May be that this would pave the Way for a tolerably easy solution of the Eastern ques Tion but it is possible also that such a policy on the part of great Britain might complicate the affair and hasten a rupture which will soon become inevitable if matters Are allowed to Drift on As they have recently been it is generally admitted that it is More than Likely that the Purchase of the Suez canal Stock by the English government was dictated by military reasons at the same time it is contended there is nothing to prevent a great Public work of this kind from becoming if properly managed a com Mercial Success. Their interests were very much Woven up with the Dominion government arid every fresh settlement near the. Red River was practically adding to the1 Prosperity of the country in which they were so deeply interested. They had every reason to believe that their relations with the government of Canada were at the present moment very satisfactory and Friendly. It was to the interest both of the company and of Canada that they should pull together and that there should be no jealousy Between the two. It was natural that there should be a Little jealousy in Canada of a great corporation like they were but it was the duty of the committee and the interest of the shareholders to consult so far As pos sible colonial susceptibilities and do no thing to interfere with those amicable relations which he hoped existed Between the two parties at the present time. They would probably expect him to make a few remarks with regard to that paragraph in the report relating to the negotiations be tween the Canadian government and the company for the Purchase of the bulk of their lands. Hear the shareholders at the meeting in Juno last refrained from discussing this question in answer to the Appeal made by the committee and he believed their action on that occasion had not failed to have its effect on the Canadian government. He again ventured to Appeal to the shareholders not to discuss this mat ter. The transaction was very Large and most important it was also a most to of Canada and he believed it was regarded in that Light on both sides of the Ocean. He did not believe the shareholders were anxious Sellers in this matter. While the committee and shareholders probably de sired to sell their lands at a fair Price and on terms generally they did not wish to hurry or Force the hear that he believed was the attitude of the company. Hear negotiations Between the government and the com Mittee were still pending and he and his colleagues believed that to discuss the terms would be damaging to the negotiations and he ventured to remind the share holders that the arrangements would have to be submitted to the Canadian parliament. . Colville the Deputy governor having seconded the adoption of the report or. Her path expressed his Strong dissent from parting in bloc with their property and he hoped the shareholders would think twice before endorsing anything like the idea of parting with Sucura Block of land he thought the same policy should be adopted in this company As in the Cana Dian land company.
