Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - December 6, 1875, Winnipeg, Manitoba Tine tragedy. From the Globe of the 20th. Ever since the trial and conviction of Davis and his wife for causing the death of the Lute Jane Vaughan Gilmour there has been a Strong desire on the part of the Community to see her seducer brought to Justice enough came to Light during Tho recent trial to show clearly that whoever he was he took part in the proceedings connected with Tho surreptitious removal of Tho body. Nothing has been More common Ever since than expressions of Surprise that Tho clues furnished by some Well known facts of the Case were not Fol Lowed up and latterly the impression had begun to prevail that unless one or other of the convicts chose to Tell what they knew of the matter the secret of the worst criminal of the Turco would to buried in Tho Graves of his victim and his miserable accomplices. It would now seem that those who had charge of the Case for the Crown. Purposely kept Back much of what they knew and have been waiting during the interval which has elapsed for such additional evidence As the sleepless Eye of Tho detective could Dis cover. Moral conviction of a Man s complicity in a capital crime was scarcely a sufficient ground for arresting him and every Effort was made to get Possession of such evidence As would secure a Legal conviction by a jury. That evidence the Pilicer charged with Tho working up Case detective Coburn thinks he is now in pos session of and accordingly at a very Early hour this morning he proceeded to Tho Resi Dence of or. John Clements and arrested him on a charge of complicity in the murder of Jane Vaughan Gilmour. It will to re collected that when miss Gilmour left or. Nattrass last Spring she wont to reside at the House of or. Clements. She lived there for several weeks and left to go Back to or. Nattrass whore she remained a Short time. She came into Tho City with two of her late employers sons on a Load of a Lieut on the 24th of july and was seen during the after noon of that Day at the grand trunk station by a gentleman who had met her at Cle ments. A week afterwards her dead body was found in a Box on Bloor Street no one who knew her having seen her in Tho inter Val. Much More of what transpired about Davis House during those dark Days was known to the authorities than they chose to toll or even to make others toll. The re sult however was that suspicion fell upon him who is now awaiting his trial and from Tho time of the finding of the body up to his arrest his movements Havo been carefully watched. Ito May be Able to establish his innocence if so he will be entitled to Public sympathy for the great wrong done him by the foul suspicion which has for months been fastening itself upon him. With singular unanimity Public opinion Long ago set him Down As the seducer and the procurer of abortion and had. He escaped arrest Tho stigma of the crime of which to was suspected would probably have St cult to him As Long Asho remained in this Community. It is fortunate therefore that Circum stances have come to Light which warranted his apprehension. All suspicion will by it be removed from those who Are Nocent and he will have ample Opportunity to Clear himself if Tho suspicions of the Public and the Crown authorities Are unfounded. Am confessions Pilavis con the Marla the question this is a question that concerns every body. It is we believe no secret that the evidence on which sex Alderman Clements has been arrested has been greatly strengthened by the voluntary statements or confessions of the two persons who Are now awaiting the execution of the sentence of the Law for the murder of Jane Vaughan Gilmour to which Clements is charged with being the two prisoners have not been allowed to communicate since their conviction and their confessions were we separately to the clergymen in attendance upon them the Ito John Potts and the Rev or Castle. The fact that in All their sub Stantial features the two Ira cements Accord is believed to be Strong Evi Dence of their truthfulness. These revelations Are we believe to the effect that Jane Gilmour who was at the time Only three months pregnant was Intro Dut eco by Cle ments to Davis who under. Circumstances of the a Large sum of Money for undertaking to procure the abortion. The sum ultimately paid a further amount being demanded but not paid be fore Davis arrest. Or Davis was drinking very hard at the time and the reason for mrs Davis assisting in tie disposal of the body was the incapable condition through drink of her husband. It is also stilted that the police have discovered the Man who drove the Waggon in which Jane Gilmour s Corpse was taken to Bloor Street. While it is of course to to borne in mind that these confessions have been made by persons whose situation is one that imposes great caution on the unqualified reception of any statements they be lipped that coupled with corroborative testimony the whole Story of this terrible crime Mav at length be discovered.
