Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - December 7, 1875, Winnipeg, Manitoba Tuesday dec. 7, the in emf see1 Okain and provisions. Hon. Messes Davis and Royal bring word unofficial from Ottawa that the Dominion government intend making the agricultural societies of the province the Media for the distribution of the Relief seed Grain and pro visions. Forms were in course of preparation at Ottawa when these gentlemen left for the use of the societies in enumerating the requirements of the sections. The. Government supplies will be Given out at Cost and Liberal time will be allowed for payment Bat payment will be secured upon the land of the participants. To believe this arrangement can be made to work satisfactorily if the details Are properly arranged though it will entail considerable work upon the directorates of the agricultural societies. We very much approve of the government ensuring payment by holding the advances against the land of the receivers As it will have the effect of restraining the demands of greedy people and it likewise puts the recipients in some other position than that of paupers. We Hope there will be no de Lay in the premises. This is the main consideration just now. The Prince of Wales at Cairo. Or. Russell in a letter to the London times thus describes the arrival of the Prince of Wales at Cairo the Prince though he did not leave is Mailia till after 6 in the evening arrived at Cairo before 9, thus travelling at the rate of Miles an hour. The Khedive himself with his ministers and the English Consul were on the platform to receive the Royal party. Several regiments were marshalled around and in the station and the brilliancy of the egyptian state dress showed off magnificently against the White uniforms of the were picked men and a Fine set of Fellows. Crowds of Arab s stood in the distance and their Gay colors under the gaslight and in the of Many torches completed a Beautiful picture. The Prince who wore the uniform of a Field marshal with the exception of a White Sun helmet Shook the Khedive warmly by the hand. They Are old friends and this is the third time the Prince Lias enjoyed the Oriental hospitality of. Egypt. Host and guest walked Arne harm to the state Carriage constructed a Little too much after the fashion of a. Lord mayor s coach but drawn by four magnificent English horses and drove together to the. Palace of Gesi Reh where the Prince and suite Are superbly housed. This Palace was built originally by for the reception of the pm press of the French. It is furnished mainly with articles bought at the French exhibition of 1sgt, which Are Many of them Beautiful works of the gardens Are one of the shows of Cairo and Are beautifully kept As Gesi Reh is the favorite summer residence of the Vith Job printing. The deceased Abel Mcdonald aged be tween 50 and 60 years of age was returning on saturday night from Hamilton where to had been with a Lood of Grain for which he received the sum of on. The Way lie was set upon by some person or persons unknown and robbed and beaten in such a manner that he died a few hours afterwards. Deceased who was a Well to do Farmer lived in the twelfth Concession township of Walpole and always bore the reputation of a Thrifty sober and industrious Man. He leaves a wife and four sons and one daughter the eldest Only sixteen mourn his untimely end. Acting on instructions from Caledonia the chief of police of Hamilton was on the Alert last evening on suspicion arrested two Well known characters named John Young and James William Young the former a resident of Hamilton and the latter said to live within five Miles of the City. The prisoners Are related and according to the police of Hamilton Are worthless vagabonds and have no visible Means of support. The fact that they were both in this Village on saturday night and in company with the murdered Man tends strongly to show that if not the actual , they Are in some Way or other connected with this terrible tragedy. One of them at least has figured in Hamilton police circles having been arrested some time ago for a murderous assault upon a citizen. The connection of deceased with the supposed guilty parties now under arrest Are briefly As follows on saturday night Ilc Donald and the two Youngs had supper together about seven in Murray s hotel in this place and engaged in conversation at the table. One of the accused asked the deceased How far he had to travel to which the Farmer replied that he lived in the township of Walpole and had Miles to go. A general conversation then ensued the deceased asking one of the Youngs if lie lived in the Village. He replied that he lived in Hamilton and said that he. And his Friend intended to return to that City that evening. He then left the hotel returning again about eight o clock and telling the Hostler they would stay All night asking at the same time at what hour the House closed. The Hostler said half past ten o clock after which he saw nothing of the parties. The conflict of evidence As to. The. Charac ter of Green Tea bids fair to be brought to an end by the Law which comes into Force in England on 1st january entitled the Sale of food and drugs the dispute is an old one and on every occasion when the subject has been ventilated thera have been authorities both for and against the absolute purity of Green Tea some asserting that the color was natural or at least due to nothing More artificial than the drying and preserving of the Leaf while others less firm in the opinion that the process of Green ing was Akin to that of painting. A Middle party was found to admit that Green Tea i was very often produced Only by adulteration but at the same time they maintain Given a sufficient Price paid by the consumer Tea of a Green color was really to be had of a natural growth and preparation. There May be some Peculiar growths of Tea which when brought to Market without the slight est attempt at colouring artificially appear Green rather than Black but with regard to the generality of what is known As Green Tea the Case is put beyond a doubt by a Cor Respondence which has passed Between a firm of Large importers and the commission ers of customs. The firm in question for Wood Brothers of London wrote to the com missioners to ask whether under the new act Green Tea faced with colouring matter can continue to be imported or when the colouring is detected by official analysis it will be destroyed or forfeited messes. Forwood state that the answer to their question is of much importance to Tea merchants that it must determine whether or not the British Trade in Green Tea can be carried on at All. If the commissioners Are prepared to allow some limit of colouring or Tea merchants May take care not to exceed the prescribed allowance but if the Tea is to absolutely without facing matter the Green business is at an end. Since this rather startling London times has published a number of letters on the subject the upshot of which tends to establish the fact that Green Tea is adulterated with Poison. Black Tea is the Leaf in its natural state. Most of the varieties Are How Ever too mild to satisfy a palate used to pickles and Mustard and Pepper sauces and like condiments. The dealers therefore kindly Poison the Leaf and produce what they Are pleased to advertise As a Superior Quality of Green Tea at one time ten ibs. Of Green Tea were sold in the american mar Ket for every in imported. The process of adulteration was performed at the Seaboard a Long Cylinder turning slowly Over a fire was half filled with Black Tea. Then handfuls of turmeric indigo and other poisonous mat ter were thrown in. After the whole has been cooked together the stuff came out As Green Tea. Each Leaf was perhaps coated with Copper since then. Chinese cheap labor has supplanted caucasian the mongolian ships the Tea already Green de and so saves the importer trouble. The change however is a bad one for the con Sumer. The Almond eyed Heathen have sur passed their Christian teachers in the Art of adulteration. A member of a Manchester Tea firm writes to the times that the color ing matto used is a compound of silicate of magnesium prussian Blue and other and that the leaves coloured. Are Laded and old and mixed with leaves of a Plant bearing the suggestive name of lie Tea there is such a thing As pure Green Tea but it is much weaker than the artificial stuff and has to be prepared by a process of drying that is Long and costly. It is rarely exported from China. Recent reformers have argued that excessive Tea drinking does As much harm to women As excessive con sumption of alcohol does to men. The com Parison of the two May be an exaggeration but it is not to be denied that Tea has Many victims and that they one and All prefer it in its poisoned state.
