Scott and Glenden Ning appointed a committee to introduce the subject by addresses but being to the length of time taken up by the discussion of the report of the committee on Sabbath Observance could not be discussed the presbytery then adjourned until half past seven Evex Ixo Sedeka Jet. Presbytery met pursuant to adjournment the Moderator or Black in the according to the programme Laid Down the report of Flie committee on Sabbath Observance was brought Down. It recommended that the passage of an act to prevent the profanation of the Sab Bath of which a draft was appended to the report and also that a pastoral letter be addressed to All the ministers and within the Bounds of this court. In introducing the report Rev prof Bice thought that it was perfectly right that travel on the lord s Day should be prohibited shooting also was a thing that should permitted on the Sabbath and worse than All he thought Strong Steps should be taken to prevent sunday excursions. He was sorry to say that during the past sum Mer he had seen ice Cream restaurants open on the Sabbath. This was not As it should be and he hoped to see it remedied. Rev or Matheson said As a professional Christian Community As Christian churches As Christian families and As individual christians no subject should be of greater interest to us than the proper Observance of the Sabbath. We have god s own example for the Bible tells us that he rested on the seventh Day from All the work which to had there can be no doubt that god who knows infinitely better than we do did what was Best for sic ally morally mentally and spiritually when lie blessed the seventh Dav and Hal Lowed he acted wisely and kindly by providing a Day of rest for us and he need not say to any intelligent Man that the Sab Bath was physically necessary and it was very Clear that it was a mental necessity and a Benefit to have relaxation from the cares of business. All knew the result of the abolition of the Sabbath in France and it was nothing More than we might expect if we allowed the Day of rest to become like the other Days of the week. We All know that the Sabbath is one of our greatest Bles sings but More than that it is the Day on which the glorious gospel is preached. There is no Point which we should consider More seriously than the proper Observance of the Sabbath. There is no doubt that at the present Day there is very great laxity with regard to the Sabbath. It is just pos sible that we May think that in the Days of our old presbyterian forefathers when they made a Effort to curb the Young we May think that they made the Sabbath a Burden and anything but a pleasure. If there was any tendency in that Way it went infinitely further to the other extreme. The proper Observance of the Sabbath is a Point which i demands attention and requires strenuous efforts to take legitimate Means to do away with the desecration of the Sabbath. We should give our influence to further those efforts and bring it to Bear upon our Legisla Tures in order to Stem the tide of desecration. Our Community needed education on this Point for they too often lost sight of the sacredness and of the grand designs of the Christian Sabbath. If laxity is permitted we but that it will Tell upon generation and As they grow up they will make their influence Felt in the wrong direction. One thing in this country pained the speaker very much and that was the great amount of travel done on sunday and we should try to see if we could not of feet a Reform. It was Only necessary to observe the Sabbath to prove that it was a Bles sing to us. The Rev John Black Moderator of the Assembly next took the floor. There could be no said about the Observance of the Sabbath for it was a Law of god and if whether we could see the Good or not to should observe it. There Are great advantages moral and spiritual mental and Phy Sical to All men in the rest which the Sab Bath affords. We need time to devote in distractedly to our spiritual wants we need to assemble to worship god to have our minds directed heavenward and to join in Praise and unless we regard our Sabbath time for such observed Nib be a Holiday to the poorer. Classes at . If sweep sweep we Are not faithful to god we need not expect this leasing upon us Rev prof Hart Gouldine rely express his Hearty concurrence report during past he with the of , was pained to hear Sabbath Steamboat excursions. He remembered. How mortified Felt when they found that their hands were tied and that they could not prevent such things. Missionaries and ministers while in the coun. Try on Sabbath frequently met trains of loaded carts and waggons on their Way it would1 appear As though the Start were made from this City on that Day purposely. He thought it advisable to seek legislation to prevent Sabbath desecration. It was Well to educate up to a High Point. He held that the Sabbath on Earth was intended to fit us for the life hereafter it was moved by the Rev or Robertson and seconded by the Rev prof Hart and resolved that the report be received that the pastoral letter be approved and sent to the ministers Aud sessions to be read and that the draft act be remitted to a committee on Sabbath Observance con sisting of the former legislation committee to consider the same and that they seek legislation in the words of the draft act sub Mit Edjor in the spirit of these resolutions As it May appear to them Best and that the names of messes Bell and Sutherland be added to the committee. The question of the Supply of the Selkirk crossing was remitted to the Home Mission Hammitte and also the Supply of Spring Field Sunnyside English River Clear Springs stinking River and Headin Gly. Moved by or Sutherland seconded by or Glendening that an application be made to the Home Mission committee of the Gener Al Assembly for a minister for this province. The missionary meetings to be held West of Headin Gly were referred to a committe consisting Rev messes Bell Fraser and Donaldson and those for this portion of the to the Home Mission committee. Together with Rev messes Matheson and Glendening. The presbytery then adjourned to meet at Kildonan on the second wednesday in March. New Stobart co. L of.
