From notices in our column during the summer it would appear that the presbyterian Church is determined to. Do it share in ministering to the spiritual wants of the North West. Four new missionaries have been sent to this province during the summer and one to fort Pelly and the Stvan River District. The Church has also sent one to labor among the Plain Cree indians and have employed a pure blooded Sioux who was ordained some years ago by the american presbyterian Church As a missionary among the Sioux in. The neighbourhood of fort Ellice. Four new ministers into our province and three out Side in the course of one summer and that when Little or nothing can to done in some cases from local sources towards their sup port this year is a record fora Church with such a High ministerial Standard As the presbyterian. To the editor of the puke 1 Russ. Improvements Are marking other parts of the province than your own City. The presbyterians of the Portage have been discouraged by the ravages of the grass hoppers but with the perseverance and courage characteristic of All holding their Creed they have exerted themselves in the cause of Christ and consequently have been advancing civilisation and Progress. Finding their old place of worship though spacious enough yet ill fitted to resist the Winter s cold and possessing none of the comforts that should pertain to the House of god they bought a Fine site had their Church removed re erected and carefully fitted up a Sanctuary wherein to dispense the ordinances and appointments of god. The Church is comfortably seated and finished in every respect in a neat and creditable manner reflecting Honor upon the work men. As to the1 congregation they Are to be highly commended for their efforts. A hopeful enthusiastic spirit pervades the work of their hands attests the disposition of their hearts. The new Church was re opened last Sabbath services being held in the morning and evening and although the weather was a propitious a severe Snow storm prevailing All Day the attend Ance was very respectable. The morn ing services were conducted by the resident missionary Rev. Or. Bell who preached a very Able and eloquent Sermon from the appropriate text found Haggai 2, 9 the glory of this latter House shall be greater than of the former Saith the god of the preacher showed that the glory of the second Temple excelled the glory of the Temple of Solomon not in external appear Ance or the Richness of its decorations but that it was graced by the presence of the Bon of god and echoed to the voice of the Shiloh the Long expected Messiah. Then lie showed that the import of these predictions did not end with the jewish nation but that they run through All and Are the same to Day As at the beginning that the Church is the successor of. The Temple and Tabernacle and exceeds them in glory. Then two questions arose did Christ become the glory of the Sanctuary 1 and secondly what was the result of this glorious manifestation 1 each of these questions he answered by several particulars presented in a Clear and forcible style. The evening services were conducted by read or Fawcett Wesleyan minister of the West Ern District. He chose his text from 5, 13-14, which he unfolded in a. Clear and practical manner. He showed by proof from scripture that Christ was a popular preacher and that he yet preached the truth and that in its simplicity As seen from the bless Ings contained in the Sermon on the mount. To saw an analogy Between the lifting up of the Serpent by Moses and the crucifixion of Christ e. A the Serpent was a remedy for the people bitten by serpents so Christ was a remedy for people bitten by the old Serpent the Devil. Then there were several Points of resemblance Between the remedy of the Serpent and Christ the remedy Viz they were both a present remedy a perfect remedy Etc. These he illustrated very pointedly. The Church was thus re opened amidst the gratitude and the love the holy resolve and Noble purposes of the people and be Hope they will be prospered in that the god of peace will multiply their number and increase their spirituality.
