Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - December 11, 1875, Winnipeg, Manitoba Saturday dec. 11, 1875. Roads to the Interior we have always held and we believe just by too that the Dominion government should provide roads through the River farms to the settlements in rear thereof. The principle non which we based this is that the Dominion government being the owners of the lands upon which these rear Settle ments Are formed should provide Means of ingress and egress. When Hon. Or. Laird was in this province members of the local government had several conferences with him upon the matter they holding the same opinion As we have expressed. Or. Laird seemed disposed to fall in therewith and promised that it should engage attention at Ottawa. Since that considerable correspondence has taken place thereupon but not till the recent visit of Hon. Messes. Davis and Royal to Ottawa was the determination of the government obtained. The Best that the Dominion government will do in the premises is to establish the trails Anc roads which have been in use for a consider Able time through the Dominion lands a regular roadways and the providing of out lets through the River farms is to be thrown upon the province after All. We think i should be otherwise but it is Well that we should know the ultimatum upon the Point and thus prepare for the necessities of the situation we expect that if legislation be required to authorize expropriation of Road ways through the River farms it will be secured at the next session of the local Legisla Ture. The question of roads to Tho Interior settlements is one that has exercised those interested for a considerable period and action has been deferred by the provincial authorities pending the determination of the Federal government. To now have that and there is therefore no reason for further delay in at least beginning action. The holding of postmortem examinations upon the bodies of Public men is being denounced by the press of the United states As not Only useless but wantonly cruel and barbarous. Scarcely is the body of a distinguished person cold in death it is said Ere the surgeons fall to work upon it and the result of their labors is telegraphed All Over the country for the edification of readers who have no better criterion for their judg ment of a statesman than the measurement of his brain. Tho Case of the late vice president Wilson is one in Point. A Chicago paper says that after death had Laid its cold hands upon him the doctors took their Scal Pels and Cut and slashed at him so As to expose every part of his internal system to the vulgar View of Idle persons. There seemed to to an impression that because he was a Public Man living his Corpse was like Wise Public property and they have hewed and hacked away at it according to All accounts with a sort of Savage Delight subjecting it to almost As close a dissection As if it were a subject for students to operate on. It is no wonder As our contemporary says that a Good Deal of Public indignation has been excited Over the matter in Washington. An unlucky a lady of great accomplishments and one who has had considerable experience of life other than Tho wife of Captain Bur ton the renowned african just published a Book in which she foretells much peril to England and especially to Queen Victoria if that Sovereign persists in retaining in her Possession the celebrated Koh i nor Diamond. That Stone has always had a bad reputation. It is said to have been discovered in the mines of Golconda Ana that in consequence of some terrible deed of cruelty perpetrated on its finder his dying curse still clings to it. Mrs Burton traces the history of the Gem through Many possessors All of whom suffered some terrible disaster or came to a violent death. The first lost his kingdom the second died in exile others were strangled or Assassin ated m various ways. The fall of the once great of Aurangzeb she attributes to the Mountain of when Nadir Delhi to took lofty 0asuto Oncal curable value among them the Koh i nor. From the moment he reached Persia every thing went wrong. The emperor was soon its Imd jewels stolen ass the two Ontario immigration. Or. Crooks has brought Down the report Ontario for 1874. Considering the Strong Competition Between Canada and other colonies for securing immigrants no less than settled in Ontario during that year. This number though k4s. Thai that of the two previous years is or Catland the result is All the More satisfactory from the fact that the class of immigrants is much Superior being mostly agricultural labourers with families and Domestic servants. Since or. Crooks has had charge of the department it has been thoroughly re organized and placed on a much better footing. The government of Ontario now works in co operation with Tho Dominion government by which the expenses to this province Are largely de creased while the work in Europe is As vigorously prosecuted an equal number of immigrants being obtained As was done under the old and Loose system and of a More Superior Quality As regards future usefulness and Benefit to the province. We see it stated that sir Garnet Wolseley while in Natal devised a new and extremely Clever plan for increasing the Force at the disposal of the government. To organized Tho Indian coolies of whom considerable numbers Are arriving and thus created an auxiliary Force of Strong. These Cool ies who Are mainly from the Jne Budda Val Ley will make excellent soldiers they will if kindly treated obey like children and were about As Likely to ally themselves with the zulus against englishmen As with Orang outings against men. It is a second Ary advantage that their new position will secure them against ill treatment. You must conciliate men upon whom you depend in Battle and if the Mauritius or Guiana were exposed to Savage incursion its we should hear Little of coolie grievances.
