Burnett lit the following account of the burning of the British barque senator is supplied by Captain Harding Porter the facts having been sworn to by him be voc the British consulate Sandy Point Colony of Magel lanes on the 29th of september last the barque senator sailed on the 9th of june from Philadelphia pa., with a full cargo of Semi bituminous Coal consigned to the Pacific flail company at Panama the cargo was Well stowed under the super Iii Rodencic of the insurance agents. All went Well till the first of september when tacking ship during a Gale a Sailor named George Zeis was knocked overboard by the main Sheet and sunk immediately. Strong gales were experienced up to the 14th, and on that Day about noon smoke was Dis covered coming up from the after Hatch and from the Side of the poop deck. A Force pump was imme Diu Toly ordered to to rigged and water was pumped through the lock Streak into Tho hold where the heat and smoke appeared to be strongest. This was continued till the 17th, a Strong Gale blowing All the time accompanied by a heavy sea. The ship grew heavy and labor de considerably. The poop Hatch was then taken off and the Crew commenced throw ing cargo overboard. On working to the beams hot ashes came with the coals. Being about ninety one Miles from Cape pillar at the Western Entrance of the Straits of Magellan it was determined to run for the Straits so As to get into smooth water and be Able to work wich greater facility. The hatches were fastened Down and the men were allowed to rest As they were tired out. At 4 . On the just a the Straits of Magellan were entered. By this time Tho smoke in the Cabin and storeroom was so dense that it was impossible to enter to got provisions or clothes. At 0 . The boats were got ready the fire having burned through the Side of the vessel Forward of Tho port Mizzen chains. At 8 . The whole of the after part of the ship was in flames. After dropping the Anchor with thirty fathoms of Chain which did not touch Bot Tom the ship was abandoned and everyone got safely into the Pinnace and longboat. At 9 . The Crew saw the Mizzen most fall Over the Side and Tho sails on the main Mast in flames. As no provisions had been taken the boats kept eastward in search of assistance. At night they landed and encamped under the boats collecting shellfish to eat. Bain fell heavily. On the 19th they started again to the eastward in a heavy Snow storm suffering severely from the cold. They landed again at night and so proceeded again next morning Tho cold continuing very severe. The Captain s wife became delirious and was sinking from exhaustion. She died next morning. After several Days of this kind of life they landed at port famine and on the 24th saw the Light of a steamship but could not attract her attention. On the 25th they started for Sandy paint and made the Entrance of fresh water Bay next Day where a Small Chillian settlement was found. The governor of Sandy Point sent a steam launch with provisions and All necessaries and took the Crew to that port. After this they came by Steamer to new York. Cast liar on Spanish affairs.
