Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - December 14, 1875, Winnipeg, Manitoba Tuesday dec. 14 ib75, educational Jle Foltz. We took occasion a Short time since to commend the Active spirit manifested by the new Board of education in setting themselves to work to devise a system of schools specially adapted to cities and towns. There Are Many much needed and in educational matters that May Well and we Hope will engage the at Tention of the Board few of which seem to us More pressing than a proper and Well considered curriculum for our Public schools. What teachers Are to learn with a View of obtaining certificates of various grades and what they Are to teach their pupils Are mat ters of great importance and immediate urgency. In this direction All cannot be done at once that it is desirable to accomplish As an ultimatum the circumstances of the country prevent. Much older coun tries than ours that Pride themselves upon the general excellence of their Public school systems have not a Little to do in this Way. Practical observers do not fail to notice that in almost every course of instruction prescribed for the Young too much time and attention Are devoted to matters of very Little practical value when acquired and which furnish but Little real mental discipline while they Are being acquired. We cannot withold the opinion that our province has been falling into this very common error. It is to be hoped that the Board will put their hands to this re form and follow it up As closely As possible. In proceeding they must consider what Edu cation is and what ought to be the object in imparting to the Young a knowledge of any kind they must consider Man in his social relations his duties and obligations and map but their curriculum in accordance with the importance of these duties. The different kinds of knowledge that have an intrinsic value ought to. Have precedence in forming a course of education fora state and even these should be classified so As to subordinate those of less value comparatively to those of greater. Then it must be borne in Nirid that every subject must be considered not Only As respects its absolute value to the possessor and its importance to the Community generally but also its Utility As an instrument in mental discipline and culture. In reorganizing prominence should be Given to each subject As nearly As Possi. Ble in proportion to the degree in which these elements Are involved. But particularly should it be remembered that this is a utilitarian age and that it is the Especial work of the Public schools to adapt the Ris ing generation to the same. Manitoba and tie Centennial exhibition Board. A meeting of the Manitoba advisory Board to the Canadian commission for the Philadelphia Centennial exhibition was held yesterday afternoon. Among the members of the Board present were the lion. Messes. Girard Bank Tyne d. A. Smith Royal Torquay and Colin and or. Luxton. The Secretary presented his report which was received and read As follows Mil. Cua Kmax and Iii presenting to you a final report of the proceedings of the Board i regret to have to state that owing to the partial and in Many parts total destruction of the crops the agricultural resources of this province will unfortunately not be so Well represented As could to desired yet i am glad to inform you that considering the circumstances the samples of wheat obtained Aye considered very Good with an average weight of 03 pounds to the Bushel and or. Pierre Delorme of St. Agathe is at present preparing for exhibition a Bushel of very line wheat which he expects will considerably exceed that weight. The other articles of produce collected consist of fail samples of Barley Black Oats peas Timothy seed lax seed unil wild hops All of which were selected from the provincial agricultural exhibition at Portage la Prairie. A very Fine selection of Root crops was also made but i regret to state that in Conse Quence of severe Frost having set in unexpectedly Early the specimens selected got Frozen before they could be sent to Winnipeg rendering them useless for exhibition at Philadelphia. Under All the circumstances of the season the Board May be congratulated in having secured even such samples of. Wheat an article which has been termed the Backbone of Agricula and of the greatest importance in the future interests and development of Mani Toba and the North West of the Dominion which must yet assume a pre Emi Nence in supplying the world with the food of civilized nations. With reference to this i May state. That i have taken the Liberty of suggesting to the minister of agriculture for the Dominion who is also furnished with samples of Muni for the use of his department that the Best samples should annually be selected from the local agricultural exhibitions and transmitted to the Canadian in Condon and else As poetical i oof of our resources in wheat growing. On assuming the duties of Secretary to the of of a Hundred addressed to Leadin parties throughout the province embrace k Fri of articles Des red for exhibition aus Centen Nial and soliciting co operation with the efforts of the Board but i regret to Sav t w interest has not been manifested by the Public at Large which was anticipated pro by tie sent in niches f account Fot exhibition one being a Fano Elk head and horns the other a f coast Winnipeg. E the exhibitor says it exists in late . This will be forwarded to geological department in Montreal for previous to regard aug the geological and Minc Balogi Ca. Representation from this province and the Sorth West much labor Vand expense has been saved to the Board by the fore thought of the Dominion government hav ing authorized a gentleman of practical experience connected with the geological department to make All the required collections. In addition to the Coal Gold and and other minerals of the ing Stone Brick clays Etc Etc of the pro Vince will be fully represented. As to the representation of our present Staple furs and Robes i am not yet in a position to state to the Board what extent of display will be made in this valuable and important class. At the first meeting of the Board Here in August last you were informed by the president of the Canadian com Mission that the Hon or Smith on behalf of the Hudson s Bay company had kindly volunteered to have a Complete selection made for the company s establish ment in London which would be credited to the department of Manitoba and the North West territories. Under your instructions and that of the president i communicated with or Smith without delay on the subject asking for information to Lay before you. An ample and handsome display of Indian Industry has been collected in the shape of Bead and leather work which has been Pur chased by the assistance of tie local government at reasonable prices and which will no doubt realize a handsome profit when sold at the close of the exhibition. In addition to the attraction it will draw it will also creditably illustrate the Industrial re sources of our native population. As soon As certain instructions Are received from Ottawa which i expect in a few Days the articles collected will be cased and forwarded to Philadelphia. In conclusion i Trust that our labors in the interest of the province May prove productive and enable the hundreds of thousands from All parts of the world who will visit the Centennial exhibition to judge of the value of that part of tie Canadian confederation which is As yet so Little known but whose future is so full of Promise. The whole respectfully submitted tons. Spa ice Secretary. Winnipeg 13th., 1875. The report was received and ordered to be filed. The samples of wheat Shewn not being considered sufficiently satisfactory the Hon or. Smith suggested that the Secretary do communicate with the Hon. Minister of the Interior requesting that certain very Supe rior samples of Manitoba wheat of former years now in his department should under the circumstances be forwarded to the Cen Tennial exhibition in addition to those sent by the Board. Or. Smith at the same time explained with reference to the Secretary s remarks in his report in connection with the fur re presentation that he had arranged with the Hudson s Bay company s officers in London for a Complete selection being made of fur from that establishment to consist of two specimens of each of their Best furs of every kind and a similar selection to be made in the Montreal establishment of their Best Robes All of which would be sent to the Centennial exhibition As a contribution from this province and the North West territories. It was also suggested by or. Smith that a practical person should be employed to visit certain parts of the province with a View to selecting if possible some better samples of wheat than that yet obtained before awarding the local government Premium of ten dollars for the Best Sample sent to Philadelphia. The Hon. Or. Royal then explained to the Board that lie had had a conversation with tie president of the Canadian com Mission while in Ottawa 011 matters connected with the proceedings of the advisory Board Here and that great importance was attached by the Dominion government to the wheat samples from this province at the Centennial and he trusted 110 Effort would be spared to secure the Best possible under the circumstances As such another Opportunity to advertise our resources might not occur again on the american Conti nent. After some Able remarks from the Hon. Messes. Girard and Bannatyne on the fore going the Hon. Or. Smith seconded by the Hon. Or. Royal moved that the thanks of the Board Are due to the Secretary for. His Able and Active services. Tie Board then adjourned until thursday the 23rd Hist. Mow tie Sun a Bridge. During the recent building of a Bridge in Holland one of the traverses 460 feet Long was misplaced on the supports. It was an Inch out of and the problem was How to rectify it. Experiments proved that the ironwork expanded a Small fraction of an Inch to every degree of heat received. It was noticed that the night and Day temperature differed by about Twenty degrees and it was thought this might be made to move the Bridge. In the morning one end of the piece was bolted Down securely and the other end left free. In the heat of the Sun the Iron expanded and before night the free end was loosened. The contraction then dragged the whole mass the other Way. For two Days the Experiment was repeated and the desired place reached. The con traction and expansion of Iron bars by fire heat has frequently been used to move heavy weights Over Short distances. Broken Walls and strained roofs and Arches have been brought into place by simply heating Iron rods till they expanded then taking the Slack by the screws and nuts and allow ing contraction by cold to pull the Wall or roof into place.
