1 Ike Ocean. Shortly after Midnight of the 18th inst As the White Star United statesman steam Seip Baltic which left new York on the 13th inst. Was under steam and Cam As an going at about fourteen knots an hour the attention of the officers on watch was attracted by what appeared to them to be the Masl head Light of a Steamer some Miles off. The proper look but was kept and on passim the Light at some live Miles to the starboard of the Baltic the of ricers to whom i have be fore referred observed the absence of the regulation lights which Are hoisted by steam ers at night when on a voyage. They a once communicated with Captain Gleadell the commander of their ship who Ali inking that something was wrong gave orders tha his course should be altered in the direct ii of the Light. As the Baltic approached the object which she was now making it be came evident to All on Board that the strange sight was caused by a blazing Tai barro1 on a Hull to which Only one Mast re Nia ined untouched. We had 245 Passen Gers and a Crew of considerably Over 10 hands on Board and 1 need hardly say tha great was the excitement among us. Tin night was line but a very heavy sea was run Ning. Nearly every one was on deck As on engines were stopped within about Quarter of a mile of the wreck. Capt Glia Dell with was on the Bridge am he gave the order for or Irving the Clito officer to Man one of the boats and proc Etc to the floating Bull for the purpose of Taining whether there was any one on boart of it. The half hour during which the Boa was away was to us a time of anxiety aug distress. Or Irvin and his Crew worked Oral lastly through the great Atlantic Waves a or did so it need scarcely be observed in imminent peril to their own lives. I Lappish they returned safely with the Captain Tine h Fteben of the Crew of the Oriental for this the wreck proved to be. She was a sailing vessel of some 1800 tons Burden and Hac sailed from London for St John n a about three weeks before. On the 10th inst she sprang a leak and becoming gradually waterlogged she settled on her port bean ends during the Forenoon of the .17th inst on that Day the Captain got out his four boats. One of them was swamped though without loss life and another with Tei men by some Means got parted from Hei companions which remained about the wreck until it was reached by the boat of the Baltic. When brought on Board the Baltic the Captain of the Oriental had no knowledge of the position of his boat with ten men but capt Gleadell being of opinion there was still a Hope of rescuing these seamen resolved to move about gently until Day Light. By Between 4 and 5 a m a tar barrel to which i have before referred communicated its flames to a number of others and to All the inflammable material of the ship and fire the for awfully grand was the sight of the huge of rising As it were from the Depths Ocean and illuminating the vast Waves Many Miles around. All through the Small hours of the morn ing capt Gleadell caused the Blue rockets to be sent up from the deck of the Baltic. These were seen by the Crew of the missing boat and at 7 a m we saw them a few Miles off and had the pleasure of taking them on Board very after. There boat was also hoisted on Board also and after a delay of about eight hours from the time the Baltic had steamed toward the wreck we pursued our course to Queenstown. Which we readied on the evening of the. 23rd. The Crow of the Oriental had suffered from the coid Dur ing their exposure but owing to the Atten Tion paid them by or Clarke Purser of the mail Steamer they were quite Well before Many hours and were All landed at liver Pool in sufficiently Good condition to enable them at once to proceed to the sail or s Home. Tunc the Ottawa citizen endorsing a charge which had been originated elsewhere took the minister of the Interior to task for not preventing the intended self expatriation of the Caughnawaga indians. How Over that the facts Are against it and entirely on the Side of the minister of the Interior the citizen properly but none the less handsomely acknowledges its mistake and shows that whatever the Worth to the Dominion of the Caughnawaga indians May and opinion is not unanimous on this Point my Laird did what in him rested to retain them if they had had any inclination to stay in Canada. These indians have Long been anxious to move and in the time of the late government made some propositions on the subject. A deputation of them recently waited on the minister with a View to obtaining a Grant of Money either by relinquishing their property on the St Law rence or otherwise for the purpose of buy ing land in the United states. The minister of the Interior i course failed to see the proper Icv of giving any such undertaking As they required but suggested that if they wanted a More convenient reservation a suitable place could be found for them in the North West. They declined this offer on the ground that the North West was too cold and it appears that they adhere to their Resolution of going to the states. Dynamite the substance which is said to have caused the explosion at Bremerhaven is also known by the name of giant powder and was invented by a swedish chemist named Nodle. It is chiefly used for blasting purposes and is the most powerful explosive agent known to chemistry. It is composed of finely pulverized Silex or Siliceous ashes or inf sorial Earth found in Hanover Ger Many and known As Kluss Elgarh. It will absorb and retain three times its weight of nitroglycerine and has the consistency of and closely resembles common Brown sugar. If ignited in the open air and not confined in any space it will Burn quiet la emitting nitrous fumes. It is generally recognized As the safest of All explosives As it is not liable to explode by Light shocks like pure Gly Cerine and is not affected by High temperature. It is usually exploded by a fuse or a Cap. Its greatest danger according to m. Guyot a French chemist arises from the pact that the Nitro Glycerine is liable to separate from the mixture and assume its original state when it May explode upon receiving a slight concussion. Yet it is constantly done and s the basis of diseases of every kind. Never is bad Hay on account of the cheapness because there is no proper nourishment in t. Damaged Corn is exceedingly injurious because it brings on inflammation of the Kowols and skin diseases. Chaff is better or than Hay because they Chew and digest it better. When a horse is Vor cd hard its food should chiefly be Oats because Oats Supply More nourishment and flesh making material than any other kind of food Hay not so much. Hack feeding is wasteful. The better plan is to feed with chopped Hay from a Manger because the food is not then thrown out and is More easily chewed and digested.
