Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - January 3, 1876, Winnipeg, Manitoba She it acc Morlo Yville Itow Kiver Rocky mountains october 18 of. I arrived Here on the Liml inst., and expect to leave to Morrow for fort Mcleod. ii Intuit arc collected i this Mission and with gratitude and will await the coining of the . Next my duly me i my e Alo it the i res i very cordially entertained by the Rev. Mcneilar through kindle a the the Aole 10 in a filial be ofor. John who intimately a with All the on the ski Kuh at tin million i i tin1 j Leyare of inking a be i ing part in the opening services of the Church which is very appropriately the nesbit1 a Lidreh and a blessed in Llu Enoe attended the services of the Dav. 1 his Young settlement is favored with the Linest crops competent judges expect that they will have at Iii Unis of wheat and that of tie Quality. 1 living lied my in Section 01 the Chi Intro and having ascertained that the indians were Lar out on pie great Prairie started West by Way of the South Saskatchewan and died Deer Rivers. For nearly four there was not a Twig to be seen but 1 to observe in that part of the country a been reported As our portion of the american desert there arc vast valleys of Tho richest land and in the opinion of should prove Correct that our great Coal bed extends East through All that Section of country then most of the country of How River will be available for agricultural purposes. Near Trio con fluence of the red Deer and Bow Rivers i found the Plain Assin Hoino Camp number ing 70 tents a people spreading the same language As our Mountain stones. They appeared greatly delighted with our visit and expressed when 1 told them that i had a son living among their Kinsmen of the mountains that num Bers of those could Road the great spirit s Book. I promised this interesting people thut next summer j would the Corleyville missionary and some of the Christian indians to visit them. Here in a responsibility to must not shirk for e Are Tho Only missionaries who have converted agent. Speaking the same language. As 1 proceeded West and visited the different Camps Trio importance of a speedy adjust ment of All misunderstandings Between the government and the indians became More and More apparent. I found thai on seve ral Points the indians were quite United 1st. That they would receive no presents from the government until a time for treaty was appointed 2nd. Although they seemed anxious to avoid Colimon the White Man yet they expressed a Linn resolve to oppose the introduction of Telegraph lines or the making roads and such was the state of the native mind that a rash on the part of a White Man or some slight depredation committed by an Indian would have involved the whole country in an Indian War. But to the credit of the poor red Man let it be written that no sooner was the Queen s message read and explained to them than they said that is All we wanted if the intelligent Public Only knew the false re ports that have been invented and circulated by interested White men who reckless of All consequences would Delight in involving the government in a War Between races they would not be surprised at the vitiated state of the indians. In Tho neighbourhood of Buffalo Lake i met with our Mission party whom i had not seen since we left the South Branch. Very fortunately about 35 tents of Victoria and crees were camped beside us. My son who had come from Corleyville to look for us Anil brother Manning entered 1 oar tily into the Oil Camp meeting on this romantic spot will not soon be forgotten. There was one circumstance at this Price was not very pleasant to me. A deputation of worthy Waite 1 us to know if we had throi1, n away Woodville and i was struck at the intelligent manner in which they sex themselves. The speaker said when some of our new missionaries come and find us absent from the station they will conclude that we have forsaken the place altogether forgetting thai we have to go abroad to get a living. Now we wish to say that our attachment to our missionaries and our stations is unabated and we know that when the Buffalo Are gone which will so ii be the Case to must return to Tho fish very place you have chosen for us 1 my reply was we shall never abandon our Mission stations. The great Christian Church in Canada will never forsake the Christian Indian and god will put it into the hearts of Good men to come to your help anxious to make the most of Lime in company with my son and the teacher of Victoria we left brother Manning to go on to Edmonton while we visited Victoria. Here i met or Warner and was deeply pained at the appearance of the venerable Man. Twenty three years ago or Warner was my energetic efficient minister of Christ now infirm in body suf Fering from depression of spirits and he expressed himself to me desirous of re turning to his friends in Ontario. Jeers i met with a Large body of indians and a respectable congregation of mixed bloods and now that we have an efficient school master and As or Warner will spend the Winter at this place we have Good reason to Hope thai the work will be revived. On Sun Day the 17th, we met or Manning and party at fort Edmonton and Tho reception that our worthy missionary received was very encouraging. The once invalid posed to the bracing atmosphere of Tho Prairie for nearly three months Cleiv find one of the kindest communities in this Western world. On Tho 22nd we reached Morley Ille and a sight of Tho grand old mountains was most exhilarating. A Man he of Snow rested upon the venerable sum the Valley looked Green and fresh bands of stories could be seen in the Dis Tance wending their Way to the Mission. A great change has come Over the scene in the tast Lii teen months. Men of business had found it to their interest to establish them selves on the Banks of our Beautiful River a Stock Raiser from across the Mountain had arrived with several Hundred head of cattle. And now on the very Hills where two years ago i saw herds of Buffalo the Domestic cattle gently Graze requiring Neith or shelter nor fodder trom their master All the year round. The Mission House 25x45. I fast approaching completion. The Walls of the Church 27x47, Are erected Anil nearly All the material for furnishing it is collect a Small school House has also been erected and Only those who have had to grapple with the difficulties attending Al hundreds of Miles Dis taut trom civilization can realize the amount of toil and expense entailed by such undertakings. Here 1 found an English gentleman who has been Over most parts o the world Many times quietly settled Down teaching the Mission school and i will Ven Ture the assertion that some of his scholars when we take into consideration their age will compare favourably with the scholars of any school in the Dominion. On the Sab Bath the Mission House was packed with stories Many having to stand outside. The Day was not a pleasant one and never have i Felt More deeply the want of a Church. c Hermian indians had Miles to attend the communion but the missionary was obliged to defer it there b ing no room for such a Large multitude in Tho House and the inclement weather pre vented our having it out of doors. As 1 contemplated Tho interesting scene i could not help wishing that it were possible for some of our Liberal friends in the Eastern vices to have been present the would have been Worth More to them Many platform speeches. During my wanderings in the Eastern pro Vinces the question was Many times asked what Good Tho mounted police effected in our great North West 1 was not then in a position to answer the the Force was then an numbers when compared with Tho vastness of the country into which they were sent made them appear As a military Force insignificant. I am now in a position to be Able to state both from personal observation and also from authentic information received from intelligent persons Itiat they have accomplished a Noble work. The whiskey Trade has been broken up the Frontier Rowdy has the line the Bowie knife and Tho six shooter Are no longer flaunted about As formerly. The poor plundered Blackfoot has now obtained a respite from the spoiler l do not pretend to say that no mistakes have been made in connection with the Force but i feel assured that i express a general sentiment when i say they have been a great Benefit to the country. Lot a treaty be now effected wit i Tho differ ent tribes of indians and a Bright future awaits this country. The Kev. Id. Wood d. Pro sight than Jiva cd Canada Iio Tisl o. Monchamp proprietor.
