Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - January 6, 1876, Winnipeg, Manitoba It thursday Jan. A 1876. The Pacific Kaif Way Kew exports Are most contradictory As to the fooling in British Columbia regarding the proposition of the Canadian government to be relieved of certain obligations in connection with the Pacific railway fora consideration of to which reference has Al ready Boon made in these columns. From the whole however we gather that the local government will oppose the proposition and As parliament is called for the 10th inst to have not Long to wait to know the result. It is suggested by the mail though that the population will in All probability be pretty Well divided Between Mainland and is land the former ready to accept the proposition the latter to repudiate it with Indig nation. It is further suggested that to Mainland people May Sec i i the proposal something More than the rejection of the Nanaimo and Esquimalt Road they May see in it a determination on the part of the Ern ment to be freed of the agreement to commence the construction of the Pacific Lino at both ends simultaneously and in consequence throw in their lot with the is Uncle vhf. Thus it seems that the ambiguity of the proposition and whether it simply Means the abandonment of the Island Kail Way Only or All the conditions in regard to the construction of Hie Pacific Len Ahvay pro apparent to Many. The Toronto nation evolves from the minute of Council that it is proposed that the original agreement to build the Pacific railway and also the sub sequent Compromise shall to that instead of undertaking to commence the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railroad and to spend two millions annually on construction within the province of British Columbia for the Benefit of the provincials Canada shall pay them Down in Cash. This if. The interpretation which in the Light of collateral circumstances we Are disposed though reluctantly to make. But for the present it will suffice to await British Columbia s action upon the proposition Brigham Young Ami the locusts. From the St. Fiul Pioneer press. Brigham Young undoubtedly has very Little respect for the Laws of the land or for any Laws or regulations of which he is not himself the author in fact May be and is a wicked old sinner on general principles but one tiling is certain he is not a fool. On the contrary he has Many times in his management of the affairs of his polygamous kingdom shown himself to to thought Ful Prechal Chiting gifted Man and Wise ruler. And to has recently after Consul tation with the leading saints at Salt Lake City promulgated from his pulpit a scheme for allaying the prospective inconvenience or Sull Deruig of his people from the threatened raids of devouring locusts so Happy a to attract Especial attention for its Wisdom and thoughtfulness. As is generally known the devastation of the insects the past two years have been confined principally to southwestern Minne Sota Northern Iowa Western Missouri Kan Sas and Nebraska. Other Western states and territories almost or wholly escaped. But in the Bligh pc of the locusts last fall they entered now Fields in Idaho Montana Utah and Wyoming and deposited untold Mil Lions of eggs in the ground along the line of their March and those who have made the insect and their habits a study prophecy that another summer will Sec the West such swarms of Grasshoppers As have never been seen before and that the Field of their operations will extend from Central Iowa and Missouri to far West of the Black kills. It is in View of this probable visitation another year that Brigham Young acts. Fortunately the crops of wheat last summer proved unusually Good and the granaries of the territory Are filled to repletion not one Grain of which the mormon ruler tolls his people must to sold or bartered away. The practical sense in requirement is Mani fest. It u a policy worthy of consideration in All the threatened districts and one which if Gem rally accepted and put in prac Tice May prove the True solution of Tho grass Hopper question. If banners throughout the threatened districts will Hoard their crops instead of Rushing them to Market and scattering the Money procured in the Purchase of luxuries or of conveniences which might possibly be dispensed with they will then be better prepared to meet Tho impending danger and to Avert the famine and ing threatened. A african Sli Sioa. It will be remembered that or. Stanley in one of his letters gave an interesting description of the King of Uganda King Miksa whom he characterised As a truly enlightened Monarch. Kun kingdom extends Over the fairest portion of equatorial Africa and his people Livo Happy under his paternal Sway. He requested or. Stanley to have a missionary sent to him and or Stanley made known the wish saying at the same time that the Man needed should be White wholly a Christian something of a doctor and a men am and should be animated by the spirit of Paul lie estimated the Cost of the Mission at and the daily ule graph announced that this sum has been subscribed by an Anonymous donor and placed in the hands of the Church missionary going contrary to one of the rules Laid Down by or. Stanley for his Ideal missionary namely that he should be connected with no special form of christianity but should come with the object of preaching its simple fundamental truths. But a Church missionary evangelist is not Likely to preach controversy and taking into account the influence of King Mesa we Ray expect to see a flourishing Church soon established in the Centre of Africa. It is scarcely any longer too sanguine for a Man of Middle age to Hope to see Africa Well under civilizing influences. Eng land is rapidly throwing her arms round that continent. What with her foot in Egypt her Western and her Southern colonies she is already an african Power. The results of successful missionary work in Central Africa commercially and dynamically May be of a momentous character. We Only Hope Tho right Man will be found for the new Mission. The Church missionary society if they can in a sceptical age find an Augustine or St. Patrick for Africa will have Good reason infer the hand of Providence. To for Tho Yokohama Japan Herald relates a remarkable occurrence which shows that some of the japanese have an extraordinary capacity for withstanding the effect of fiery rotations. An Osaka Man uttered a prize to any one who would drink one quart one pint Ond one half a cer Tain native liquor about As Strong As spirits of wine. A coolie performed the feat but died the same Day from the effects of they buried him in a shallow grave and about Midnight the next Day the Earth absorbed the liquor from his Well soaked body and lie woke up from his Debauch. Pushing off the Light soil that covered him he Rose from his grave in a White shroud and Start led some robbers near by counting and dividing their Money. They took the strange apparition for a ghost and ran off in Dis May. The coolie picked up the Cash and re ported to his wife the same night a sadder but Richer Man than he was before the spree. Tho Houck committee. It will be remembered writes the London correspondent of the , that at the period of the Groat distress at the East end of London the mansion House emigration committee despatched several thousands of poor people with their families to Ca Nada. The functions of this committee practically ceased several years ago but a dispute with reference to a certain capita Tion charge has stood Over until the present time. 1 regret to learn that the members of Tho committee will have to find a Large sum to make Good this claim and that us the fund is exhausted the amount will necessarily be drawn from their own private pockets. The most popular of Keement the biggest thing in the Book Trade is thesul of in key s Jostle songs. The Rush for them from All quarters of the uni Ted states far Ami near is something unprecedented. Every sunday school and prayer meeting Lias them or is bound to have them. The publishers messes. Eige Low main of n.y., inform us that since the opening of the Moody and Sankey Cam Brooklyn oct. Have sold nearly copies of the Book and Tho demand continues to increase. There is no doubt that by the time the Campaign is completed according to programme for the year the sales will have amounted to Mill ions and the Royalty fund in the hands of messes. Stuart Dodge co., for benevolent purposes will be hundreds of thousands. All this Royalty fund was the legitimate pro Perty of messes. Moody and saucy and no dog could have wagged his Tongue at them for putting it in their pockets. But they Are determined that not even malice should Lind an argument to blaspheme the work of the holy ghost from the possibility of mixed motives in their labors. pm Nisi Nixt in exci.and.----111 Chc last ten years 213 criminals have Boon sentenced to death in England and Wales but Only log or than in fact executed. In the year 1874 As Many Twenty six were sentenced to -.bath, and sixteen of them were executed.
