Its doom has been pronounced and preparations Are being made to terminate its exist ence. Tho Dominion government is of the opinion that Manitoba can get on Well without it and that the Cash spent in its maintain Anco is Good Money wasted. In response to the application for better terms from Manitoba the Dominion government gave the applicants to understand that if by practising a judicious retrenchment they would Endeavor to help themselves it would give their Case a favourable consideration. And it indicated very plainly that retrench ment in this instance meant among other things the abolition of the legislative Council of the Little province and in fact believe made that abolition a condition of it 5 consent to an increased subsidy. It would appear that the leading politicians of the Prairie province look with favor on this Moil of retrenchment and it is said that the appointment of or. James Mackay who is a member of the menaced body to a sent in the provincial executive ensures the passage of the abolition measure during the coming session of the Manitoba legislature. Apart from the Lliel affair and its adjuncts political events in Manitoba have not exorcised much influence As yet in other Domin Ion provinces. But the abolition of the second legislative chamber in Manitoba must i Iii produce considerable Effort in provinces regaining u legislate Uin Oil. That event when it happens will probably stimulate agitation in behalf of a one chamber legislature in British Columbia Quebec and the maritime provinces. We Trust Chat the Centennial exhibition in Philadelphia will not assume a circus aspect. In a matter of so much importance to the nation we shall have a variety of counsel and a multitude of suggestions. A whimsical correspondent suggests that to should dig up the Bones of Washington and Lincoln and have them exhibited at so much a head for the completion of the National Monument on the Banks of Tho Potomac. Another proposal is that the House in which Greeley was born shall be purchased taken Down and erected in the Centennial grounds. It is further suggested that the horse which general Sheridan Rode on the occasion of his famous Galop to Winchester now out at grass in the West should be made to do duty As cynosure of attraction. Tho advantage about those suggestions is that they can be multiplied indefinitely. But if we once go into this old clothes and relic business there will no room for any honest exhibition. It is not the intention to have a museum in Philadelphia but a real exhibition. A few relics might be brought Over from the Patent office to give now interest to certain departments of the display but this should not be encouraged beyond a certain Point. Tho exhibition should be representative of the Industry and resources and Genius of our people and of the nations who take part. Those Olio come to the Centennial will come to see what the nineteenth Century has achieved in the Way of science and skill and Enterprise. This in itself is a vast Field so vast that even to partly cover it will tax the resources of its managers. Therefore it will be True Wisdom to dissuade any exhibitors from going outside of these defined limits. People will not go to Philadelphia to see a suit of Washington s clothes or a horse which Sheridan Rode. They will re Joice in an Opportunity of seeing what eng land have done for the advancement of our Gen y. Herald.
