Wednesday Jan. 12, 1876. Home it will strike our readers As it has the writer that the following statements by Bright respecting the reluctance of the Imperial parliament to Grant plainly Essen tial municipal Reform to Ireland furnishes 110 weak argument in favor of that country s demand for More control Over her own affairs. The Reform refused As above to Irish opinion was promptly conceded to Scotland several years since. Or. Bright of tub Irish sunday closing Bill. At a Public meeting in favor of the Irish sunday closing Bill held in the Birmingham town Hall the following letter from or. John Bright was read Rochdale nov. 27, 1875. Dear sir you must excuse me if i do not attend your proposed meeting at Birmingham. I do not feel that i have any thing to say on your question to my constituents. If you do not succeed in the House of commons you May blame the government and your pressure should be brought to hear upon them. They refuse you what Irish opinion asks for because they fear to break up the Alliance Between their party and the drink interest in eng land. The publicans say they placed the present government in office and the government admit their obligations to them and fearing to offend them they influence the House to reject your Bill. It is a humiliating condition of things for the land and the whole kingdom. Perhaps the Clay May come when the morality of the nation will be too Strong for the publicans till then we must suffer the degradation which now discredits us. I wish you a very great Suc Cess in your labors. I am John Biro it. To or. T. W. Russell 35 Street resolutions were passed expressing satisfaction at the fact that All classes of the Irish people had combined to demand the stoppage of the liquor traffic on sundays and indignation and regret at the course pursued by English members of parliament in opposing the Bill and calling upon the members for Birmingham and North Warwick to demand for Ireland the Concession of controlling the Sale of drink on sundays. J12.22 As we Are now looking Forward to a Short but very important session of the local House would it not be As Well for the government to do something in the interest of j act of the farming Community of this province i Al we have heard More than enough for the last six months of the abolition of the legis Tive Council and a probable saving of some now probably the government might go further and not save but make twice that amount to the country at Large by passing one or two Good measures much needed by the agricultural class. First to want Good Laws regarding fences. What Are lawful fences and in what manner shall line fences be kept in repair by neigh Bours. Secondly we want an act preventing All entire animals running at Large not restrict ing the act to any class of animals and not do injustice to cattle breeders and favor horse and sheep breeders surely the horned Stock of this country is As important a Branch of farming As any other and should be As much encouraged for i make bold to assert that four times greater an amount is in vested in it than horse Breeding and that has proper Protection. What inducement is there to breeders to invest in blood Stock of any Breed As Long As runts of bulls run at Large can he keep an expensive animal m his stables Well fed and cared for and his cows run at Large to Breed to any Stock that his neighbor May allow to run at pleasure not Only is the loss Here but his Young heifers Are in calf frequently a year too soon stopping their growth and Breeding dwarfed calves for it requires a healthy full grown dam to Breed healthy calves. These mat ters can. Only be cured by preventing bulls from running at Large and it can not be said that this is premature. The matter was duly brought before the House last session and thie longer it is put off the worse it will get., with an act of this kind passed there would. B6 some inducement to breeders to import shorthorn bulls and it is not prove that every shorthorn Bull imported arid bred from is a gain to this province of at a year. Nov editor Why should the oldest settled county of the province Selkirk be less entitled to these things than West mar our people must want to Advance with the times and rank at least equal if not ahead of any county in the province.
