Since before Christmas to the pre sent time Twenty Ono men had of their own Accord come to his House to sign the abstinence pledge though the majority of them were Young men not Given to drink. As yet in no instance had a female come to Sirn the Lodge. Seeing this desire for total abstinence manifested he resolved to nurture and help Forward so Good a spirt amongst the therefore they were met that evening to found a St. Anne s Lodge or tem Perance society. Although he the speaker was not of opinion that the Bible commanded All christians to abstain for Ever from the moderate use of stimulating refreshments yet to did believe that it was agreeable to holy scripture that in certain circumstances it was Wise proper and Good for a Christian Man to keep from even the right us of wine and Strong liquors so As not throw temptation in Tho Way of a poor weak one and without intending it cause him to fall to his Hurt loss and ruin. As to the society they had assembled that night to Lay As it were the first Stone in that Parish and its Princi pies were such that any person Loving our Church could not refuse to join it. Its de signs were Catholic giving Liberty to every Man to use has own judgment As to which Side or Way to took to help Forward sobriety and Temperance. It asked its members to discount Nance drunkenness it being a sin against both Iod and Man an evil to to shunned a hateful thing and it asked Thorn to help promote Temperance either by signing for total abstinence or for simple use of Thorn in moderation As a beverage or medical drink. Nobody could complain of hard and uncharitable obligations or Pharisaic Al dogmas who joined this excellent society. It but sought simply to unite men together in Unity of purpose by setting themselves As examples and encouraging and helping others to go and do Tho Church of England Temperance society had for its head no less a personage than her most gracious majesty Queen Wor j thy every Way of the affection of her Loyal i people.
