Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - May 5, 1877, Winnipeg, Manitoba Saturday May 5, 1877. Tub though no More fighting has taken place during Tho past Low Days even Tho engage ment at Kars and Tho bombardment o Poti seeming to iwo Boon after All but Verj Small nit Yiirs Tho rapid Advance of Tho Kus sians in Rou mania and their operations ii Asiatic Turkey show that before Long Tho Tho real work of Tho Campaign will Bobo gun in Earnest. Austria Lias insisted upon Russia raising the blockade of Tho Danube As to expected and Tho latter has com plied but now the turks Havo resolved t close it. This seems contradictory for a re cent dispatch stated that Fobart Pasha had assured Tho British Consul at Lalath. That Neutral vessels would not he hindered. Ii appears that Tho Danube is so swollen Byre cent Rains that Pontoo Ning is highly danger oils and that it would be next to impossible to Cross a Large body of troops car below Widding. Meanwhile Iho other towers Are making immense preparations for possible eventualities. Tho British Navy is rapidly being brought into fighting trim and troops no being mobilized. The Prospect of fight ing has brought to the colors any number of recruits. A Madrid dispatch says that Spain will Send an ironclad Squadron to Tho Levant. There is great activity at where an italian Fleet is being prepared for Germany also intends putting in com Mission several additional men of War. The Khedive of i Egypt can spare Only men for Tho Sultan s service but Turkey May look Lor a diversion being created on Tho russian Frontier of Kho Kand. Which i.-, threatened by Tho Sultan of Kasha Gen. Kauffman has thought it necessary to ask for reinforcements. Crete is however Ripe for insurrection All Tho peasantry in Tho mountains being organized and Tho enforce ment of turkish authority being diff iseult even in Tho towns. The fooling of Servia is exhibited by Tho refusal of Tho Over Anent to allow Tho turks to occupy Tii Adowa which Abdul Kerim Pasha proposed to do. To turkish forces Are being concentrated at Rustchak on the right Bank of Tho Danube a few Miles above the fortress of Silistria. The inhabitants have been notified to pro vide themselves with six months provisions or to Leavo Tho Placo. From this base it is probable the turks will Bond out expeditions to dispute Tho passage of the Danube and some hard fighting is Likely to take Placo about this Centre. Tho romanian army is being massed at Bucharest in Readi Ness for whatever May turn up. A very important item to to considered As regards Tho prospects of Tho Campaign in Asia is a letter received at Trio British foreign of Lico from capt. Burnaby of ride to Khiva Fame declaring that to has discovered Tho existence o a secret treaty Between Russia and Persia under which the latter has concentrated a Force of men on the sul Tan s Frontier. It May be safely conjectured that Russia s plans aim More at Tho con quest of territory in Asia than Kropo As such a policy is less Likely to elicit Prema Ture interference of Iho other Powers and it would per pare Way for ultimate accomplishment of her possible designs on the latter. A subject of great importance at the present moment is the Mariner in which or. Gladstone s resolutions of which distance of 113. The rails Havo been Laid Twenty four Miles from Thunder Bay. Tho distance from English River and Selkirk has been found to be 300 Miles making a total of Over 410 Miles Between Lake Superior and Rod River. Diverging from a Point East of Lac Dos Mille lace a comparatively easy route for Tho main Lino Lias Boon found via dog Lake to a Pigon Bay. When this is constructed Tho Branch from Thunder Hay will probably not be much Over forty Miles in length. Tho work of railway construction is now going on Over a distance of Miles Ami a contract for Clearing Tho intermediate portion and erecting a Telegraph Lino has been lot. This is the title applied to Tho immense District bounded on Tho Oast by Rod River Lako Winnipeg and on Tho West by British Columbia. It has Boon i Surv Rod in Tho Tourso of Tho various explorations Ami surveys that hero is a Groat Deal of timbered land scattered Over various portions of it. But this boars so limited a pro portion to Tho whole As scarcely to All act Tho appropriateness of Tho designation. Two courses Wero open for the line after leaving Selkirk. Ono was to carry it South of Tho Riding mountains which lie Between Tho Assiniboine and lakes Manitoba and Kimii Pogois Tho other was to pass be tween these mountains and Tho lakes and thus reach Tho Valley of Tho Swan River after turning Tho flank of Duck mountains. It was Early settled that Tho Swan River Valley which embraces a Large tract of Fer tile territory and affords an easy route would Havo to to reached and trove Rod As carrying Tho Lino South of the Riding mountains would involve much heavy work in crossing Tho deep and Wido valleys of Tho Assiniboine and its tributaries. A glance at Iho map will show that to carry it South of Lake Manitoba and North of Tho Riding mountains involves a considerable Detour. It was determined therefore to examine Tho Narrows of Lako Manitoba with a View o ascertaining who Thor the Lino could not o carried directly from Selkirk to the Northorn Edge of Duck the re sult of the Survey was favourable the Strait joing easily bridged and Tho route free from cavy gradients. Tho distance from Selkirk o Livingstone whore Tho Lino leaves Tho in River Valloy is 270 Miles. This por Ion of Tho Road was located Early in and the work of locating the Lino Between and Battleford was completed Lefors Winter set in. During the Lino Etoen Battleford and Edmonton South of and in Tho same Longitude As fort Kynion ton was thoroughly surveyed Ami Tho por Tion West of Edmon ton As far As Tho yellow head 1 ass was practically determined. The distance from Selkirk to Edmonton is s07 Miles and from Edmonton to Tho Miles making a total of from the. Red River to Tho Rocky mountains. There is now telegraphic communication to cd Monton and this will soon to made continuous from fort William to Tho yellow head the fourth from fort George across Tho country via the Skeena Valley to port Essington opposite Queen Cliar loto Island. If military considerations Are allowed to pro Vail the first of these will have to to abandoned. If Echo Choice depends on Commer Cial and engineering considerations it seems to occupy an extremely favourable position antics Atino skit com knt. The Telegraph line has been pushed on in Advance of the railway and its existence must prove of great advantage in Many ways both to Tho settlers and the Ovorn . In accordance with Tho advice of Tho chief Longi Noor advantage has been taken of Tho unoccupied condition of Tho country to make the Road Crossings As Little dangerous As possible and to abolish farm Crossings altogether. Tho Sites for stations Havo also been selected names Given them and town plots Laid out in their neighbor Hood wherever it has appeared expedient to do so. The Road will thus become in Tho fullest possible a colonization railway. Tho Prairie Region comprises a vast Lent of country Tho soil of which is Fertile and the climate salubrious and though Tho rail Way cannot Supply adequately the whole of thin great expanse of territory it will run generally near Trio Centre and will serve As trunk line from which branches May hero after to extended North and South. The Region does not Promise to be come much of an agric it ural country but Tho investigations of the geological Survey suggest the presence of Mineral deposits Over a wide area East As Well As West of Lako Superior. Tho Lino projected North of Tho lakes makes the distance from Selkirk to Ottawa Miles Shorter than the present route through Tho tinted slates and or. Fleming advises Tho location of Tho line and the gradual Clearing away of the Timber so As to admit of the of a Tele graph line As soon As Ono is demanded. It is worthy of note that by care in Tho Selec Tion of the route the Easterly ascending gradients Over Miles of Tho Road can to kept Down to half the maximum gradients on the grand trunk and other railways in operation in Tho older provinces. In the chief in Vinci a pays a Well merited tribute to the of his stall for the Energy perseverance and enthusiasm with which they Havo devoted themselves to Tho work amidst great Difili enties and some times dangers. Notice has been Given will be received by the of commons but the indications Are that his views vill be utterly repudiated by the Liberal party. Pacific Kuhn he pass a distance of Miles. By the exercise of care and As the result of extensive and Mimi to Mir Voys the bridging which threatened at one time to lie Verv heavy in Tho Prairie Region will be rendered comparatively Light. For a time it was doubtful whether the Branch from Tho main line to Lako Superior would run to Thunder Bay or Nep Jon Bay Trio former was ultimately selected As a terminus and fortunately the surveys of inst year show that the Branch i i i i n t r r i m i Tki 7" j 1, t _ _ Tuk i acidic Hau Hoik.
