Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - June 11, 1877, Winnipeg, Manitoba I i is f. The practical hand Book and guide to Manitoba utmost every conceivable question regarding the Prairie province. Invaluable to now com cry. Just the thing to Send to friends in the older pro Vinces who wish to know nil about Manitoba As it is entirely made up of practical and Roll Ablo information. Price cents. For site at Tho of Kkt puss Ollice. Sent to any address on receipt of Price. G he Fanilu l 10 a j u n if 1 j 1877. Hix Asua there probably no fun oct upon which Mich a Wilc dial Terence of opinion and prac Tice exists in various Counti , and among Uirl front Roli Youh hoots us upon the Man Ner in which the Sabbath should Boob served. In Scotland everybody wears a Long face the whole of sunday and in Many parts of England lilo dullness of the Day is Insul Brable. In Canada generally to May say the same though certainly among the French speaking population there i.-, some amount of vitality. In the Conti nent of Europe and in All the republics of America not excepting altogether the United states the customs of the people would seem to make the Day one More Lor amusement than of religious Observance. It is not our purpose to enter into any discus Sion of the various views and practices thus adopted or to venture upon an expression in regard to them. Our observations have simply been made by Way of introduction to a description of a somewhat important movement in Progress in the Mcusher country to promote the opening of Public museums and Sulci like places on sundays which does not seem to moot with Mich bitter opposition As it did u few years ago when people were startled by its Novelty. A very Large and influential mooting recently took Pluto in London Dean Stan Ley in the chair in support of the objects of the sunday society of which association that divine is president. Among the la Dies and gentlemen present were leading representatives of science philanthropy and religion. Every theological school in the Church of England without exception had its spokesman and expressions of sym Pathy with the purpose of Tho organization were conveyed to Tho assemblage from catholics and nonconformist.-, either by Oral or written communications. In his opening address the Dean of Westminster spoke he said to All but two who wished to see the Observance of Sun Day abolished altogether and those who considered the English Observance of the Day incapable of improvement. Lie explained that Tho society does not wish to interfere with the solemn character attached to Tho first Day of the week by Tho common consent of the English people and that it a not necessary for the attainment of the end they have in View that sunday should made the occasion of the frivolous re creations which Mark it upon the continent lie held however that it was necessary that something should be done by religious men to overcome the inert m of those who arc satisfied with seeing Tho Public houses open while the National museums and Art Galler ies arc shut such an anomaly being per nitrated under the existing Law. The conviction generally entertained by the speak ers and the audience seemed to be that Tho present Laws of Tho country relating to the Observance of the Sabbath press unfairly on that numerous Section of the population who under existing Arrango mints Are limited to the Choice Between going to Church and frequenting the Public House while their tastes incline to neither. It was complained that the sunday could not be regarded As adequately utilized so Long As a vast proportion of the people estranged from Ordinary religious services and averse to drinking usages were denied by Law from enjoying those sources of recreation and instruction which Are furnished by National museums Art galleries libraries and Public gardens. The opinion moreover was very generally expressed that Tho in. Forced austerity which has hitherto charac Tho keeping of sunday in great Britain has gone far towards alienating the working classes of the present generation from the dogmas and ritual of the churches. Unfortunately and it is no use disguising the fact the working classes in England As in Canada do not in any considerable num Bers attend the churches. The men find a Dull Day and to Wear off its Dull Ness they not infrequently spend As much of it As is permitted by the Law at a Public House. It is not to to supposed that no endeavours arc being made to counteract the influence exerted by the sunday society for we notice that within a few Days of the holding of the meeting we have described lord Shaftesbury presided at Tho annual mooting of the working men s lord s Day test association. They had he remarked heard much of education but to More and More Felt the need of moral education and of Domestic purity and with their domes tic life cherished and preserved he was Little apprehensive of the future. The honour the peace the Security the dignity of eng land depended upon her Domestic life arid no danger could come to us her Long As Tho people reverenced the Sabbath. It will be interesting to watch the development of opinion on this subject. Ant English collector of autographs is said to have offered Prince Bismarck for his written resignation which the emperor returned endorsed with the word Wiemals to parties furnishing.
