Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - August 30, 1877, Winnipeg, Manitoba I to i business announcement a View of better accommodating a Large number of the patrons of the Bjiek press we Havo opened a Branch office Ami counting room under Chorge of our or Mcgregor in the building immediately North of Tho i of Tome. I Reo press july Goth she Gail t1euesday, aug. 30, 1877. Since a Check was put upon the rash but triumphant Advance of con. Gourko s army towards Adrianople during which the Diplo Matic question As to whether Tho occupation of constantinople should be permitted assumed a primary interest nothing but re Verso has attended Tho arms of Tho the defeat at Plevna necessitated the immediate Retreat of Tho army South of Tho Balkans if another Sedan was to be avoided and Gourko had to abandon Lorn Saghira to abruptly slut the bulgarian legion which formed part of his command was loft to its Ianc. Tho whole interest of the contest at the present moment centres in tie defence by Tho russians of the schip a pass in the Balkan Range in which tie retreating army Lias fortified itself. Here its sole Hope is to beat Oil the continual As saults of Sulieman Pasha s troops in the Hope of receiving Aid from the grand Duke Nicholas. Tho grand Duke afraid to Advance to the Rescue until More numerous reinforcements reach him. Tho defence of the pass cannot hold out much longer. To Havo no information As to the strength of Tho defenders or besiegers. Tho More numerous Tho former the More diff Zulty in keeping up the Supply of pro visions. A Day or two will probably bring us news of the end of the struggle which is being carried on with the greatest gallantry by both sides. Condemns infant baptism and also strange to say polygamy and free masonry. The great social peculiarity of the sect at the pre sent time is of course its practice of polygamy which is comparatively of modern introduction. Rigdon. Pratt Hyde Young and Kim. Ball Are its True originators and widow of the Prophet stoutly denied that her husband Ever had any wife but herself. Young s revelation she declared to be a fraud and in consequence she withdrew to Nauvoo. Her four sons followed her and have now founded a Mon Gamio mormon Community called the josephites. This body May yet prove a formidable rival to the Church of Brigham Young and stands a better Chance of escaping a collision with the Public sentiment of the United states meanwhile at Salt Lake City the practice of polygamy is encouraged on the ground that the rank and dignity of Tho saints proportioned to the number of their wives and children. A defence of the practice also Sot up on moral grounds. Mormons As Sert that their Community is free of Tho hoi Ribic sin and viciousness that prevail else whore fornication and adultery with thai guilty passions and abandoned conduct a declared to be unknown their wives Are asserted Burton and others Are very Strong on this Point to be Happy virtuous and healthy and they Challenge comparison in regard to their Domestic and social purity and any Monog Amic Community in Tho world. Ilo Worth his am Erica even swigs a sort of Pron on their virtue. Long before the adoption of polygamy in Thelva Crest Tho latter Day saints were subjected to ridicule hostility and Carol Perse cution yet they persevered in preaching their doctrine which was a now americanized phase of millenarian so. Less than a week ago Tho Telegraph us news of Tho serious illness of Brig Hain Young and now we learn that he died yesterday afternoon but we have no details of the mortal sickness which has terminated his career. Brigham Yourg was born at Witting Hain Vermont june 1st, 1801, his father being a Small Farmer and consequently he was Little More than seventy six years of age. His decease will probably prove the death blow of the mormon Church or at least of its existence As an organized Semi political Community. The conversion to a mormonism of the deceased president of the sect took place in 1s32, when he was consequently of mature ago. Lie was soon after made an elder of Tho Church of Jesus Christ of latter Day they Call them selves and first preached his new religion at Kun Kliu id Ohio. Joseph Smith the founder of the sect was also the son of a Farmer resident in the United states belonging to a family which had Tho very worst reputation. Smith was no bettor than his relatives nevertheless a kind of sensual religiosity appears to have been mixed up with his More carnal con duct. When about fourteen years of ago according to Smith s own testimony he began to reflect upon the importance of preparing for a future state. He went from one religious denomination to another seek ing rest and finding and eventually to began to withdraw into secret places to spend hours in prayer and meditation and receive angelic visits. On the 21st septem Ber 1823, when it scorned As though the House was filled with consuming in a moment a personage 1 stood before him with a countenance like lightning and visible to the extremities of the body1 who proclaimed himself to be an Amgel of Tho who Angel informed him that his sins were forgiven and told him that he was chosen to be an important instrument in Tho work of preparing for the second coming of Tho Messiah and further gave him a Brief sketch of the origin pro i cs.4, civilization Laws and governments of Tho original inhabitants of America of their righteousness and iniquity and the Blessing-5 of god being finally withdrawn from them to was also informed where some plates were deposited on the West Side of a Hill not far from the top about four Miles from Palmyra in the county of Ontario n. Y., and near the Railroad which leads to the Little town of munches he advised him to go and View which Smith did but the Prophet was not vet holy enough to obtain Possession of Thorn. Eventually on the 22nd september is it he placed in Smith s hands these wonderful records which contain an account of the primitive history of America from the of Tho Tower of Babel. This is Tho Book of mormon a Prophet the writer of Tho believed by the followers of Smith to to of equal authority with the jewish and Christian scriptures and to form an indispensable supplement to them. In 4 20, a. D., they were finally Oft ocl up whore Smith found Thoin by one mormon. The character letters or Micro. , upon the unsealed part were Small and beautifully engraved representing in unknown irm Girago called the reformed by Means of certain curious Stone spectacles found along with them Smith claimed that the lord enabled him to understand and translate the ancient records into such h Unble English As the who had received almost no school education and could Only read with difficulty was master of. The Book of mormon finally appeared be fore the world in but Only a very be act number of persons were Ever shown i the original plates. A controversy sprung i up regarding its Roal authorship and it was i claimed by sceptics that the so called Book j of Momoli was a Sally borrowed or Stolon j nearly verbatim from a m. S. Romance writ ten by a quondam Clergyman named Solo Mon Spaulding who died in 1816. Tho work and since proselytes to a mormonism have Princi Pally been attracted from Tho most ignorant classes of England and Wales. In 1sj55 Brigham Young was appointed Ono of Tho twelve apostles of Tho Church and sent As a missionary to Tho new England states whore to was very successful in making converts. After the mormons had been driven Kirtland to Missouri and from the latter to Illinois and the murder of Joseph Smith by a mob Young was chosen president in his place. The year following the charter of Nauvoo was re pealed by Tho legislature of Illinois and after a cannonade of three Days the mor Mons were driven from their capital and Temple and led by president Young to Utah where they arrived after a Long and toilsome journey across the Plains july 24, 1847. Next year Tho great body of mor Mons arrived and founded Salt Lake City and at Tho establishment of the territorial government in is i a president Fillmore appointed Brigham Young governor of the territory. Next year the United states judges were driven away the governor re moved and colonel Ste too appointed in his place but on visiting Utah in 1854, he thought it an unsafe residence and resigned the mormon president exercising supreme authority and saying i am and will be governor and no Power can hinder it until the lord almighty says Brigham you need not to governor any longer a new governor gumming was however appointed and sent with a Force of United states troops to protect him and the fed eral officers but Young forbade it to enter the territory Cut off the Supply trains while the troops were reduced to Straits by being overtaken by Snow in the mountains. A Compromise was however affected Tho mormons pardoned and the troops Roniah de until 1sgo, Eri Ghim Young still 1874 retaining the presidency of the Church assisted by 12 apostles. The recent determination of the United states to break up polygamy and the appointment 1869, of a now u. S. Governor contributed somewhat to reduce Young s authority and it re Mains to be seen How Long Tho Church of Tho latter Day saints will be Able to hold together now that its leading Light has de parted.
