Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - October 26, 1877, Winnipeg, Manitoba I i two important invents. T St. Paul Pioneer press oct. 21st. Yesterday two events occurred which Mark a very important Advance in the rail Road development and material Progress of the state. These were the simultaneous completion of the Brainerd Branch sixty live Miles in length combining the St. Paul it Pacific Branch line with the Northern Pacific at Brainerd and of the Glydon Cut off Twenty two Miles in length connecting the St. Paul Pacific at Breckenridge with the Northern Pacific and with Tho ninety Miles of Tho St. Vincent Extension running North Ward from a Point eight Miles South of Glyn Don to Fisher s Landing. These important links in Tho Chain of Railroad communication Between St. Paul and Minneapolis and the lied River Valley were left unfinished in j 873, when in consequence of the financial panic of that year the construction of these roads was suspended. Tho consequence was that in order to reach Tho lied River Valley it was necessary to take the circuitous route Spiik around the two sides of a Triangle formed l by the Lake Superior Mississippi and the Northern Pacific connecting at the Junction so called near Duluth. This added some sixty Odd Miles to the distance from St. Paul or Minneapolis to Points West of Brainerd. The Brainerd Branch form ing Tho Hypotenuse of this Triangle and the Lyndon connection with the main line now furnish competing outlets for the Trade of the red River Valley of nearly the same mileage from Moorhead. They bring us into much closer and More intimate relations with those Fertile and rapidly growing Agri cultural districts and with the flourishing British province of Manitoba some sixty Miles beyond the present terminus of the St. Paul Pacific at Fisher s Landing. This Gap also will be speedily filled and with these increased facilities of communication we have every reason to anticipate a Large and rapid increase of our Trade with Fertile regions which Are rapidly filling up with population and Progress in agricultural development. The completion of these important links will also give a powerful stimulus to the movement of immigration in that direction and to Tho settlement and agricultural growth of those Fertile wheat areas it is difficult to overrate Tho importance to those two cities of the simultaneous opening of these two new and direct communications with a Region so Rich in All the elements of a prosperous future. We have also received official confirmation of the announce ment we recently made that work is to be at once resumed on Tho Northern Pacific with a View to its Extension to the yellow Stone and that some grading is to be done this fall if a to the Indian policy advocated by lord Dufferin at Winnipeg the n. Y. World in a recent editor Ial says singular and Complete is the contrast Between this Canadian policy and our own what american statesman writing or speaking of our indians would allude to or regard them As or contemplate them As an appreciably advantageous element in the economical Structure of the country sitting Are no obstacles when the new York Herald wants to make its unjustifiable attacks on Canada. It says it is difficult to understand Why sitting Bull and his fellow murderers should have been warmly welcomed by the mounted police of the Dominion. This editor is evidently ignorant of Tho True nature of the Welcome if he does not wilfully misrepresent it. If this sort of thing goes on to will not have reason to be jealous of Tho Sioux chief As regards the reception he would get if he cat no to Canada. Not Only the mounted police but the municipal forces All through Tho willingly furnish guards of Herald. Moisson machinist Black and Whitesmith Cun and Locksmith cold Iron worker.
