Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - January 7, 1878, Winnipeg, Manitoba R in Fly f1 is business announcement with a flew of better accommodating a Large no Robor of the patrons of the fake press we opened a 3ranch office and counting room under charge of our or Macgregor in the North of the Post office. Kenny Luxton p Reo press office. July 6th, 1877. Monday Jan. 7, 1878. The Issue of the Masotas strike in Lon Don England is fraught with important consequences to future contests Between labor and capital. The strikers have strained every nerve to deprive the employees of the foreign hands whom they imported and tha strike committee have issued an Appeal to All the Trade unions in the country to help them to carry on the struggle in which they Are engaged. In this circular they denounce the conduct of the employers in introducing foreign work men to fill the places of the englishmen who deserted their work As though there seems nothing revolting to the mind of any person of common sense in English firms employing foreign workmen any More than in foreign governments or private manufacturers engaging the ser vices of English mechanics. Assuming As this Appeal Wai rants one in doing that such foreign workmen Are efficient the ultimate end of the struggle is easily further resistance on the part of the strik is will Only tend to increase the import Sion of foreigners and thus bring about a surplus of labor that must surely produce a further reduction in the rate of wages. Jenny june writing on the new York fashions has something to say about one which has already been suggested As helping to account for the depression in the Trade which alludes to As the tendency in everything to combination and mixing up of elements. She remarks that the seasons seem to have become As As much mixed As our garments and and that this postponement and blending of the Rigours of Winter with the i Der influences of another season Are detrimental to the interests of Trade for persons who have managed to get along until Christ Mas consider wisely or not that they can manage to shiver through till Spring. Thus she explains the vagaries of fashion instead of fur cloaks we have cloaks made of furry cloth instead of victories and Boas Broad fur facings applied to the cloth As Collar and trimming instead of Milfs we have a straight piece buttoned on the front of the garment which forms a double breast and by so simple process of looping a convenient an inexpensive Muff. To have suit combinations of silk and Vel trimmed with feathers which imitate fur and which Are Ronde also in lightweight and very pretty muffs and hats to accompany these costumes. But though they look like delicate fur they Are not fur and they interfere with what is known As the legitimate fur Trade. The most fashionable article into which fur itself enters Are the handsome silk fur lined Jacques and wraps which Are really useful Aud now Felt to be indispensable As they can be thrown Over evening or reception dresses and Are not Only a Complete Protection from the sudden changes of temperature but on occasions serve to cover and conceal from the vulgar the attractive details of a party toil for some unaccountable reason the Ham Ilton times usually a fair and honorable controversy list has taken to hounding sex governor Morris. In so doing it reproduces the substance of speeches delivered last session in the House of commons by two members from this province to the effect that or. Morris was a heavy Speculator in government lands citing As a specific in. Stance a Case in which he purchased a Pio Perth for which afterwards increased in value to and holding that this Vas unseemly on the part of or. Morris inasmuch Asho was a commissioner to whom was referred disputed land titles. We think if the times Only knew How heartily the members in question were laughed at right at Home for the ridiculous position in which they put themselves by their speeches it would have hesitated before giving them the quasi endow station it now does. The times says i. Morris did not deny the accusations made against him. As a matter of fact or. Morris did most emphatically deny All transactions in real estate which he could possibly have anything to do in his capacity As a commissioner upon disputed titles. This denial he telegraphed to Ottawa at the time and after having heard All that or. Schultz and or. Ryan had to say in the i cruises and with or. Moms explanations in his hand the Hon. Or. Mackenzie lose in his place in the House and expressed the strongest Confidence that homr. Mor been guilty of nothing improper or unseemly. This should have some weight with our Hamilton contemporary. For its information will explain that or. Morris commission relating to disputed titles involved adjudication upon Only such lands As were already in Between private parties and. There Foo had a purchased Ever so much government lands though As a fact he never held More than a very few Quarter sections of such he could not in any possible Way to called to adjudicate upon the titles thereof. And then that parcel of land which to purchased for 000, and which it is said developed into Worth he bought while chief jus fice and for the purpose of utilizing a por Tion of it As a residence. Fortunately for him the City Mads such or Cath that it in creased in value immensely. The Purchase was from a private party and As or. Schultz declared upon the floor of House the Patent from the Crown therefor was received Long i before or. Morris even began his work As commissioner upon disputed titles. We submit for the consideration of the times that or. Morris was not an extensive Speculator in government land and even had he been it could not have interfered with his work As commissioner upon disputed titles. With much greater propriety might members of the House of commons be pro scribed speculating in Dominion lands in any and every conceivable shape consider ing that they have to pass upon All Legisla Tion ther Anont than a who has nothing whatever to say in the premises. And to this we will add that had members of parliament been so pre vented there would be to Day hundreds Aye perhaps thousands less sad hearts amongst the half Breed and old settler population who have been Jewed out of their birth rights. . From a Quebec paper of 1803. Article Iii. Notwithstanding All that has been advanced by politicians and newspaper writers purporting to show that the reciprocity treaty Between the United states and the British provinces was abrogated solely on economic grounds we fear that impartial history will have to Tell that the real cause of that proceeding was anger arising from supposed sympathy on the part of British americans with the people of the Southern states during the civil War. In a late article we intimated that even or. Sum Mer was not free from this feeling j and one has bub to glance Over his famous lec Ture delivered at the Cooper Institute for proof that such was most probably the fact and that even in this Day statesmen of ability and Benevolence May be found Capa ble of giving up to party what was meant for were All that is said of us in reference to the South True the question would still remain How far was it right to abolish the treaty for no Man will pretend that revenge is a proper ground of Public policy. But we deny that the Southern re Volt received any such extent of countenance from these provinces As could constitute a National offence. That there were individuals amongst us possibly not a few who wished Success to Jefferson Davis is not to be denied. It is in the nature of things and especially in human nature that Pend ing such struggles by standers will sympathise not with both parties but with one or the other and it too often happens that this favor is extended upon grounds totally distinct from the merits of the quarrel. Thus when an insurrection took place in 1837 in the provinces of upper and lower Canada an extent and intensity of feeling soon became Manifest on the american Frontier which we have no desire to describe and which we Only refer to As illustrative of our position. Whatever May be said respecting that state of feeling Iii British America during the civil War it is still True that in no Case was there any pub Lic exultation that As communities we never interfered and that if blame at All attaches to us it is founded upon the Well know fact that thousands of our Young men who had voluntarily Many of them in the spirit of adventure left their Homes were to be found throughout the War in the armies of the United states while perhaps not a dozen went to uphold the Southern confederacy. No. The peaceable and Chris Tian people of these provinces saw Little cause of Joy in the firing on fort Sumter. On the contrary a feeling of deep sorrow generally prevailed and was thus expressed in a Resolution moved by the Leader of the government in Nova Scotia seconded by the Leader of the opposition and adopted by a unanimous vote that the House of Assembly have heard with deep sorrow and regret of the out break of civil War among their friends and neighbors in the United states. That this House without expressing any opinion upon the Points in controversy Between the con tending parties sincerely lament that those who speak their language and share their civilization should be shedding each other s blood and desire to offer up their fervent prayers to the father of the universe for the speedy restoration of no doubt the St. Albans raid was calculated at the moment to irritate but what Man can say upon reflection that Canada was answerable for that outrage or that she did not in paying the Large amount of to the St. Albans Banks do even More than she wus strictly bound to do not one of those raiders was a British subject and their Abuso of the right of Asylum was what we could not have another act added to the Long list of of Lences and follies Winch political refugees committed nil the world Over. The apparent irregularity of judge Corn sol s conduct upon the first enquiry into the mid was surely More than punished by that functionary being so Long suspended from office and the want of judgment on the part of a chief of police in allowing the Money taken from the raiders to leave his Possession was More than atoned for by the payment made by the government to which we have referred. Were it even proper then for the americans to raise the ques Tion of How to regarded their late War we Are convinced that they could make out no Case against us and we Are prepared to enter Raore fully into proof in favor of this conviction were further proof necessary. But it is not necessary and we gladly turn away from All debt table ground to look on what we must regard As the sign of a rapprochement which we see in the Bill lately introduced into the House of representatives by or. Beaman. This measure is certainly not All that we could have desired but it is valuable As evidence of the growth of a right spirit. We look not for a tinted measure of legislation but for a Large and Liberal treaty of Commerce and to could not be said to have obtained that were the privilege of navigating Lake Michigan set Down As compensation for the american use of Canadian canals. Rather should we see for instance such an equivalent offered As the use of the new York canals by canadians. Neither do to like to see it demanded of us to abolish our free ports while it is again pretended that United states vessels should Trade on our entire coast and that americans should have the Light to fish on our entire Atlantic Seaboard. This would not be reciprocity m fact far from it. Be sides we cannot forget that with our present status As a Dominion to be humbled in an International treaty would scarcely do. Toots and shoes.
