Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - January 16, 1878, Winnipeg, Manitoba A graphic Canadian news. Reported specially for the free press. Ottawa Jan. 16. In his opening address or. Adam Brown president of the Dominion Board of Trade said there can be no doubt our great St Orth West will yet contain the Backbone of Canada. Few questions if any that came before the Board Are so important As those containing the development of this Rich Fer tile country. The first thing to be done is to Rush Forward the railway a3 fast As Possi ble connecting Lake Superior with Winni Peg so As to afford a summer route and late fall transportation for the precious fruits of the soil and imports of merchandise implements Etc. He went on to say that the exports of that country after a while will astonish the Dominion. The Good influence that a railway would exercise can hardly to appreciated. The Road will do wonders for Manitoba and its Trade with Canada. It cannot be expected that the whole of the fall crop can be got to Market the same season. Some might but by the erection of an elevator at the Lake us Porior terminus it could be done the follow ing Spring. There is no difficulty in running such a Road in the Winter. The Pembina Branch will be a Good outlet to the United states. The Road beyond Winnipeg should be a colonization Road. It should be built As fast As the country can lie added that its Progress Westward for colonization would promote the present advancement of the Pioneer and assist the future develop ment of rhe vast prospective resources of Manitoba and Keewatin territory beyond. An Odessa despatch says the turkish Fleet have bombarded Thodosis in the South East of the Crimea. They burned ten houses and Killee Ono Yerson and wounded a number others they also bombarded Tuapa but did Little damage. The bombardments opened on these towns by the turks while negotiations Are pending Are said to have caused great irritation at St. Petersburg. St. Jan. 16.
