Hoping that the new will see the matter m its right Light 3 Grant a free Day each week. Jan. 18th, 1878. Ii Way from tie Northern Lii civic to the a tilt. To the editor of the frkkpkf.s8. Thirty years since very serious ate Der faculties were threatened be Aio u Indiana and the Southern Boundary amicably Settle Stittes gave to the Stato of Michigan gave Peninsular comprising that portion of fhe state of Michigan lying Between lakes Michigan and Superior if she would release the strip of land in dispute Between state and the two states first mention ,1 this Section that state accepted As a in Gilead to her ruffled sovereignty Thyl same then being considered an acquisition of More value in Quantity than Quality. From this Large area thus acquired the state has at various times made Liberal wants for the internal development and improvement of this part of the state among which was the Grant for building the present St. Marie canal the Portage Lake we and for a Highway from Copper liar Tor on Neewana Point South to fort Howard on Green tray Lako Michigan. This part of the state instead of being the worthless wild which it was supposed to be at the time of its acceptance from the Gen eral government has yet been of sufficient value to cause the completion of these great works but there has been taken from the various mines since discovered on them a to 1873 Over Worth of cop. Por and Iron. With one Copper mine alone my raising Worth yearly and the Sama mine sufficiently uncovered to show that the same amount can be taken out for the next eight years. Some two years since the legislature of that state passed a Bill granting twelve sections per mile of this land to any company who would undertake the construction of a Railroad from the Northern shove of the Straits of Mac Mac North and Westward to Marquette on Lake Superior. About one year since this offer was accepted by a new York company of capitalists but for some reason it fell through. About the first of the present month a contract was signed at Lansing the state capital with a responsible com Pany the required deposits were made and a joint commission appointed on the part of the state and the construction company to proceed with the Sale of the land. The time for completion is two years from Jan uary 1st, 1878. The length of the line is some 150 or More Miles and in its course already surveyed it passes within a Short distance of the Sault needing Only a Short Branch to reach that place. To make a Southern connection into the states from the South Side of the Straits which at the Point of crossing is Only four Miles across. Two railroads have been built to within about forty Miles of running from Detroit Michigan through Saginaw the other from Jackson on Tho Michigan Central railway the two being competing lines. This new contract will doubtless ensure their through completion to the Straits at once. Prom Saginaw West to l Anse some seventy Miles the Railroad was completed some years since while f of l Anse to Ontonagon a land Grant for a Railroad already exists and thorough surveys have been made. From Tho latter place to Ashland the present Lake Superior Ter minus of Tho Wisconsin Central Railroad running South to Milwaukee and Chicago no provision in the Way of a land Grant has yet been made but As the distance is mostly in the state of Michigan it can doubtless be easily obtained while from Ashland to the Northern Pacific at or near Duluth Jomo eighty Miles there is a land Grant in fact it runs to Montreal River the Boundary Between Michigan and Wisconsin the same being the continuation or part of the orig Inal Northern Pacific railway Grant. Surveyors have been out for a full month on t Ais part of the route from Ashland to the n. P. K. R. And it will soon be completed. This is being made for the purpose of the Early building of this Gap Between these two roads both of which find their present Lake terminus in Winter useless for through traffic. One by one the roses to Are causes actively at work which will not Only give this province a competing United states and Canadian outlet if canadians will meet the railways of the states at the Sault but will also give the great Grain bearing Section of Northern Iowa. Minnesota and Dakota their shortest and cheapest outlet to the Ocean through Canada Over what a glance at the map will show any one is the natural route East for the Sec Tion named. Thomas Dowse.
