Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - January 28, 1878, Winnipeg, Manitoba Business announcement flu Ivalew of better accommodating a Large number of Trio patrons of the free press we have opened a 3ranch office and counting room under charge of our a Macgregor in the . Kjtny 4 . If rep press office. July oth 1877.__________ Lite w Winnipeg Field Battery. 0 a Sale City skua Stoke. Good sound placed cordwood Trott Melville monday Jan. 28, 1878. Sitting bum. Komors. Info a fiction received at Bismarck on the 23rd january from general Miles fort Keogh announces that most alarming intelligence Lias reached that Post. It is reported that sitting Bull is now camped on Frenchman s Creek with Over a thousand lodges including the escaped Nez forces and the recent deserters from the agencies numbering two Hundred and eighty lodges with eight Hundred warriors. Sitting Bull s own Camp numbers Twenty three Hundred warriors and five thousand women and children. They Are splendidly mounted and armed. The Agency indians Are armed with Sharpe s rifles and carbines and any abundance of ammunition they have also government horses and mules in Large num b3i-s. Sitting Bull s immediate command is e dually Well armed and equipped. All the principal hostile chiefs Are with him Black Moon four horns Long dog and lied Bear. Ked Bear recently deserted his Agency with two Hundred lodges immediately after his journey to Washington. Black Catfish Cleof of the Yan Tonais is in the Vicinity of Peck and Wolf Point and sent word to Ren. Miles that he will stand by him. Upon the strength of that intelligence Gen. Miles sent on Trio 18th, two companies of infantry to fort Peck to hold it against attack. The indians of sitting Bull s Camp were seen within ton Miles of would indicate a Southern movement and probably an attempt upon fort Keogh. A correspondent states that Gen. Miles can put Only five Hundred soldiers in the Field and if sitting b do moves on him another Custer Massa Cre will follow or else a masterly Retreat. The St. Paul Pioneer press commenting on the above says the reports Combine plausibility and improbability. It is a Priori an unlikely thing that an Indian band should subject itself to the fatal risk of a Winter Campaign which involves Long marches through tracts destitute of Means of subsistence and exposed to deadly Rigours of cold and storms. But sitting Bull is an original Savage and the mild weather lately May have tempted him even into so unprecedented a step in Indian warfare As a win to Campaign. The circumstances which give probability to the Story in the opinion of our contemporary Are the rumours which have come Down from the British posses Sions All Winter of sitting Bull s uncomfortable position As an unwelcome intruder and his determination to return to the United states at the first Opportunity the mysterious signs in the Black Hills and beyond of the presence of scouting parties and the recent wholesale desertions of indians. These and the Semi official o character of the information sent make it a miso to rashly discredit it. If the report is literally True the situation of Gen. Miles verges upon the critical. The disadvantages of a Winter Campaign Mil be Felt by soldiers a a Well a indians and a Retreat in the face of the enemy apparently the Only recourse will be attended with certain hardship and almost certain danger.
