As matters of fact under Tho old Law Only the lands of non residents were sub act to the wild lands tax under Tho new a these without any exception whatever Are subject to exactly the same tax As be fore in addition there is the one cent an acre imposed on All resident lands with the 640 acres and then again the new act provides a tax of five cents an acre to reach the Hudson s Bay company s lands which will alone amount to some As the collectors returns of last year 1876, show under the old Law the land tax amounted to Only some the successful operation of the new Law will realize All this and about ten times As much additional and yet intelligent men will so far insult Public intelligence As to declare that the Law of last session actually reduces the amount of taxes the truth of the matter is that the Law though perhaps not perfect is far too Good to suit the purposes of those whose special aim it is to denounce its projectors and therefore they resort to the course of outrageous misrepresentation the amendments to the election Law involved the repeal of the ballot. Upon this Point we can Only say that we regret that the circumstances of a Large portion of Tho population seemed to be such from the expressions of their representatives that the ballot was Inada Tible. We Hope at no Dis Tant Day to see the ballot restored. A most important measure of the session was the liquor License act. Its provisions have been so fully and recently explained in these columns that it is unnecessary to re peat them. Suffice it to say that it is a nearly after the Crooks act of Ontario As the circumstances of the country will per Mit.
