Oreo press office july Atli tuesday april 23, 1878. Tub great masons strike which has excited so much interest in England owed its inception to some difficulty about wages arising with the contractors for the new Law courts in the Metropolis it has now Virtu ally come to an end. The precise sum sacrificed by the workmen in the struggle not exactly known but it is estimated it Cevla Iolj not less than this amount represents not Only Money not earned but the saving previous Industry. The masters have no doubt also lost heavily but they have not like the men been doomed to enforced idleness for a prolonged period. Foreign labor was the weapon with which the masters fought and conquered. The English workmen have recognized the uselessness of attempting to prolong the contest in View of the successful introduction of foreign masons to perform the work at prices which they refused with scorn. In Rolv to an Oscr of the strikers to take nine Pence Halfpenny per hour the masters have declared that they must now stand by the foreigners who have engaged with them and there being an adequate Supply of workmen at nine Pence the English artisans have had to accept that Price. The inter Esting problem which now presents itself to the building Trade is How Long the foreigners hold their own in Competition with the British Workman when both toil at the same rates of pay the difficulties of a strike having once been overcome by the importation of foreign labor it May safely be believed that in future the question be solved again by a resort to a similar expedient. _ a Woki to .
