Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - May 11, 1878, Winnipeg, Manitoba Business announcement Selth a View of better a Large number of the patrons of the free press we Nave opened a Branch office Aud counting room under charge of our Urmac Regor the building immediately North . Kenny Luxton. Kree Tress office. July 6th, 1877. Fractures wanted we that besides immense Are officially told deposits of Coal gang jew saturday May 11, 1878. Of it i3 but within the last few years that citizens of the United state could bring themselves to believe it possible that under the free institutions of the great american Republic a class of Persona should grow up Whoso existence would be a standing menace to the Law abiding mass of the population. Unwelcome As the admission must be the fact of extensive organizations having been formed in the Large cities undisguised purpose of overturning the present fabric of society is now too Well known to admit of denial and the people will very shortly have to consider what they must to protect themselves against the evil machinations of this Hydra which has recently reared its Many threat ening Heads. The dangerous combination to which we have alluded and which posses ses its ramifications in the principal Cen tres of population is composed of men who not hesitate to Call themselves communists. The purpose of their organization May be gathered from the words of Karl Mars in the aim of the communists is the overthrow of the capitalists by the acquisition of political this was but a vague expression to use on the Conti nent of Europe in the Days when the Mil lion were not invested with the privileges of the suffrage but such words Are pregnant with meaning when applied to the Possi Bilty of such principles being adopted among a people comprising forty millions enjoying Vij Universal suffrage. The first real appreciation Felt by the americans of the serious danger existing in their midst was the acts of the rioters in Pennsylvania last summer when millions of dollars Worth of property was deliberately destroyed by a mob of Van dals much As was the Case in Paris at the close of the into Franco German wat. It would appear that in 1872 the Headquarters of the International society the Central organization of the communists boing driven from Europe by the severity of treatment meted out to the combination in the Continental capitals was transferred to new York. Here they have been perfect ing their plans for the overthrow of society As at present constituted. Rebellion is not intended to be the Means of attaining their end on this Side of the Atlantic but they seek to bring about the contemplated Revo Lution by securing the election of their candidates at the polls. With this purpose in View they have been persistently Endeavor ing to gain control of the different trades unions of the country and it is asserted that they have already attained considerable Success in this direction. From statements which have appeared in our recent exchanges it would seem that Large number of communists Are drilling regularly in Chica go Cincinnati and other Large cities. When the leaders Are questioned by the ubiquitous reporter As to the purpose of this Prepa ration they profess that they have no unlawful purpose in View. They intend they say to achieve a Victory at the polls. If the minority acquiesce Well if not Why it May be Neces. Sary for their party to secure by Force of arms the attainment of Power they have constitutionally won by Means of the ballot Box the railway strikes of last year gave Rise to the formation of a political labor party opposed to the interests of capital and it has already attained very considerable influence. The difficulty of coping with such an insidious foe to Well regulated society As communism is Likely to prove under a form of government affording so much Liberty of political combination As is permitted by the Constitution of the United states May Well give Rise to serious apprehensions. Evidently the strength of Republican institutions is Only just begin Ning to be tested in the great nation to the South of us and though the Good sense of the moral and industrious majority May Triumph in the end if a struggle should occur there is much reason to fear that the secret organization of the labor party May prove for a time an exceedingly dangerous foe to encounter in a country inhere the leaders cannot while conspiring against society be repressed by gendarmes or their followers when resorting to arms be met at every Point by regular soldiers. There Are Iron Ore Petroleum Salt and the precious metals not Only in the vast undeveloped Interior but also on the Atlantic and Pacific Seaboard. We have but to put a laborious people in Possession of these elements of agricultural and Indus trial Prosperity we have Only to increase tenfold the present population of four Mil Lions and we shall then have a source of Imperial strength and a constant Market for our manufactures which would enable us to look with comparative indifference on hostile or discriminating tariffs in foreign states. The facts upon which such speculations May be founded were detailed at length in a most interesting paper from the pen of or. Sandford Fleming the Engineer in chief of the Canadian Pacific railway read at the Royal colonial Institute on Canada province of Manitoba county of Selkirk.
