Smith Ivhon to Toliese facts Tomt lie parted from Mccarthy Nour of ii of Loeks and has no knowl Odire of i subsequent movements. Mccarthy returned after a four Days stay to find that her Lut Slind Hud left. This Init did not alarm her. In a few lays heard of the horse hav Inu Lieen left lit shod Iii and map pop medium husband had Iron to the isl anal. Then she to Mako ii Juii ios and Learned that the Juirl to had started to i it had Noi seen him. Her anger to alarm Ancl anxious enquiries were male in every direction. Ili Fyk Spear mice was Connei on in the papers Tho theory advanced that he had Iel i the country. This supposition was strength cod by his wife s that lie had a Large sum of Money in his pockets As much As she and weakened by the fact of his having Over Sljivo to his credit in the Hank. Who Ever heard of irishman running away from a Rood property and a paying Busi those who Nosti once this explanation of the disappearance. The Osh Ornes denied having seen him after he left the with Smith and claimed to Honvo retired at 10 o clock. Statement however was contradictory in some respects and Many suspected that something was wrong. The much unites took the solemn declarations 1 of All who could be supposed to know any thin about the missing Man and nothing was Learned. And then a n Nie Parker began to talk about Whitt she knew and her i Binal statement was taken by the magistrates. She. Was a French girl about seventeen years old and a Belvant at the Osborne House. She do or relied the visit of Mccarthy and Smith and said that she he Aid Mccarthy return alone that she listened at Tho head of the stairs and head an altercation in the bar room that something heavy fell on the floor that she head Laboured breathing and some time afterwards a Wagon with something Large in it was driven away from the front door. This statement unsupported As it was by the evidence of any one ise who slept in the House was laughed it by the townspeople and the magistrates More especially As the Gill did not Bear a Good reputation. No arrests were made. But mrs. Mccarthy believed that her husband Hud been murdered and continued to push enquiries energetically. The Mono ton times took up the matter and kept it constantly before the Public goading the i authorities into making unwonted exer for Tho unravelling of the mystery. Shediac indignant at the supposition that Mccarthy could have been Mur dered there. Moncton persisted in advancing this theory As the most probable explanation and the country around was divided Between the two. At every table bar room and fireside in the country the matter was a subject of discussion. In january a hat was found in the sea Doc River and sent to mrs. Mccar thy who recognized it at once As her husband s. Her barkeeper identified it also and a Moncton Mitter remembered that lie had sold one like it to Mccar thy. This increased the interest. Shortly after this discovery the girl Annie Parker who had been living with mrs. Mccarthy some weeks said that she saw the Osborne kill Mccarthy and know where the body . Her Story was taken Down the Osborne arrested and an examination made. Her Stato ment was that Mccarthy returned to the on the night of his disappearance lung tip his Brown overcoat and rubber and spent some time with her and the Osh Ornes treating and drinking freely. Finally Oborne put a White j order in his liquor which soon Stupe find him when Elim Osborne took a Roll Bills out of he browsers pocket right Side find Harry Osborne stripped him of his watch and Meerschaum pipe. Then mrs. Osborne told Harry to take the Hatchet Ami finish him which Harry proceeded to do by striking him two blows Back of the right ear after which he tied Stone around Tho neck of the Corpse it out with her help to an express Wagon and drove away with it. He afterwards told her that he drove across Atkinson s i Arm to the sea Doc River about a mile above the Bridge and put the body in the water. The Brown save said was altered to suit or. Osborne who was sick in bed when the murder was committed and the Money used in paying debts. She frankly acknowledged that her previous Testi Mony was false and a three examination by or. A. L. Palmer strengthened rather than weakened her testimony. Nylic answered questions quickly de scribed every detail told where the rope was obtained for tying the Stone on with and related How she washed up the blood mid swore on the Bible to keep the secret. A careful examination of the premises neither materially weakened or strengthened her evidence. Spots found on Tho bar room Hoot but it was not Clear that they were blood stains and nothing was Moinul which had belonged to the missing Man. It appeared Liat had paid some debts but i jigs counsel promised to account for the. Money at the trial. A night Atchian had seen an express driven by a Man going away the Village and returning on the of the disappearance but that not an unusual occurrence and he did not Retog Nix the wheel tracks had no been teen m Atkinson s Field. Few doubted at the of the exam Tion that Mccarthy been murdered but most people questioned the accuracy of Annie Parker s account of Tho tragedy. It seemed ridiculous to be Lieve that the i Bornes did the deed in her presence Ami that the boy could Hove the nerve and strength required for depositing the Corpse in the River. The Cool bearing of the Osborne also cast doubt on the girl s Story and the breaking up of the ice was eagerly looked for that the body might if possible be found. Die a government of l Ord a Reward of for rho Dis covery of the remains and Miliny people kept a Lookout for it. A piece of Cord similar to the rope which Annie Parker says the Stone was tied on with was recently found in the River by a craftsman and a week later not far trom the spot flu i of the body was said to have been sunk he a a Corpse floating Down Stream. Here conies Tim he shouted to his mate and they soon cured the prize and handed it Over to the Coroner. The discovery confirmed Annie Parker s testimony in Somo respects and that it was false in others. The n overcoat which had been Accord to her. Made Over for Horne was i n the dead Man the watch which she 1 and Ace Missid Harry of having stolen was i i Mccarthy s pocket and in the pocket from which according to her Eliz i Osborne took the Money there was a Roll of Bills and in another pocket a Meerschaum pipe Brandy flask and loaded revolver were also in the pockets. The medical testimony was that death was not canned by drowning but no fractures or wounds were found except a discoloration behind the ear and a Small Cut Over the Eye. Annie Parker on being confronted with All these evidences of the faulty of her tale repeats her account of the Mur Der and the mystery is thus As great As Ever. Who killed Mccarthy who conveyed his remains to the liver what share did Annie Parker have in the deed of blood what was the motive these questions might doubt loss All be answer cd by Annie Parker if she would speak out but she seems to Boshie Ding some one tit the expense of the Osborne. Her anxiety to convict them led to her invention of Circum stances which could not have occurred. Tin finding of the Money is not proof positive against the theory of robbery As Mccarthy might have had a larger sum on his Pei son. Lie might have been in company with Annie Parker after Leav ing Smith and met his Fate at the hands of some jealous Lover of her s. The theory that he fell from the Bridge in a Drunken state while attempting to Cross it with the mistaken idea that he was on the Road to Point thu Chene is disproved by finding the body up Stren and the fact that he was murdered May be considered settled. Move evidence than the girl s statement will be., required by a jury before convicting the Osbo nos and unless new discoveries Are made the crime May yet go unpunished. But now that so much evidence has been obtained the chances Are that the mystery will be fathomed and All the guilty parties brought to account. T he Coroner s verdict upon the victims of the Minneapolis Mill disaster sustains the experts and condemns Tho middling purifiers. Tin company appointed for the Revi Ion of the old testament met at West Minster London England on saturday april 13, and continued their Worktop the end of the first chapter of Esther. Set John Campbell c. B., k. C. S. A has just died a Edinburg aged seventy seven. In 1834 he did distinguished work among the Cir cars of Orissa. In particular he charged on a Large body of them with Only six troopers at his Back killing ten natives and taking one prisoner a feat which so intimidated the Cir cars that they never afterwards showed fight in numbers. During Tho years 837-54 to was sent to Orissa Hond and the Honrada tribes 10 put a Stop to human sacrifices a work in which he was eminently successful rescuing in All men and women who had been destined to sacrifice. Tiik Paris correspondent of the London times gives the following Birds Eye View of the exhibition Canadian part is very interesting and Tho objects which Are parti curly excellent excite general admiration. In Short this exhibition is about to be a great Success. People May come without any fear of my. M. P., of England has introduced a Bill for the abolition of actions for breach of Promise of marriage. What he objects to is the claim of damages for merely sentimental grievances such As wounded feelings and the like. He thinks that in most cases of the kind no evidence is adduced of actual loss or injury. What he would seem to imply is that the breach of Promise per a constitutes no ground for action and that it is Only where there Lias been specific loss by resigning a situation or some such cause that an action ought to lie and that then it should be for the pecuniary damage not for the breach of Promise. The Ottawa correspondent of the scots Man published in now York in his last Lottor says Tho result of the cd Xebec elections shows that be Molliei whether to acted constitutionally or not in dismissing a ministry with a Large majority at its Back was not far astray in interpreting a right Public fool ing towards the provincial government. Even the most sanguine reformer never anticipated such a reaction. That f. Large conservative majority should to utterly routed and cast to the winds is More than extraordinary and can Only be accounted for on the ground that the. Policy of become peculiarly obnoxious to the great mass of the elec tors especially the mercantile and com Mercial classes. How these elections will Art oct the Federal elections it is hard to say but they certainly cannot weaken Tho present Civ emment and will Al though the issues Are widely different have a Strong tendency to give the Mac Kenzie administration another lease of Power.
