Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - October 2, 1878, Winnipeg, Manitoba October Pantuck daily edition. Wednesday oct. 2, 1878. Lie Success of the Suez canal an Enterprise designed and accomplished by the celebrated French Engineer m. Fer Dinand Lesseps. Has tended in great measure to dispel the doubts Felt by a great Many engineers regarding the possibility of severing the two americas at the isthmus of Panama. The project is by no Means new for Many a scheme foil he construction of a ship canal that should unite the Waters of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans has been successively started and eventually abandoned. In 1846, in 1850, in 1851. In js70, and again in 1875, formal treaties were signed be tween the United states of Colombia and different projectors. The requisite Capi Tal has however not been forthcoming and the concessions granted have accordingly lapsed. On several occasions Engi neers sent by the Washington govern ment have examined the various proposed routes for a canal and brother Jona than has More than once threatened to make such a Cut As should derange the Western trend of the Waters that eventually form the current known As the Gulf Stream whose warmth tends to the great amelioration of the climate of the British Isles and thus to bust up the tarnation the late Napoleon Iii. Also took great personal interest in the ques Tion of a possible through ship route to China and India by he contemplated Straits of Panama though he is said to have favored a Way by Lake Nicaragua and the san Juan River. The project promises such an enormous change in the fortunes of North and Central Ameri Ca As Well As in the general Trade Between Europe and it might Well arouse the enthusiasm of those who have Given any degree of consideration to the subject. The Long talked of Enterprise seems Likely Atlas Tobe really taken in hand by a company specially organized for the Pur whom the colombian government through whose territory the canal would pass have granted a Concession the route having also been definitely decided. Two alternative routes have heretofore struggled for the favor of engineers one passing through the North West portion of the isthmus of Panama from the town of that name to Aspinwall the other connecting the Lake of Nicara Gua with the Pacific on the one Side and with the Atlantic on the other. The latter route though some four or five times longer has the advantage of pass ing through a More level country and o having a Large Lake and a Stream which could be utilized and made to form integral portions of the canal. The delay however that would be involved in pass ing vessels through the longer Channe has probably had some influence in determining the selection of the presen site and perhaps the existence of the railway across the isthmus May have exercised an appreciable weight in Contr buting to the Choice made. Avo Are no at present in Possession of the details o the project nor would the particulars b of great interest to our readers. The eventualities of the future involved i the Enterprise under notice however Are so important to the whole continent of America that the subject should b of some interest even to a Community s very Remote from the scene of the in Dei taking As Are the people of Manitoba Roke nod fila and that the promises Nade by those gentlemen publicly and privately must be full elect to the letter. The spirit of the Obj thai. Press. From the Hamilton times. On saturday we published several columns of extracts from newspaper articles written since the election and with special reference to it. The major portion of the opinions expressed were taken from Canadian Reform journals und we think those who read them came to the conclusion 1 that the wholly unexpected reverse sustained by the Liber Al party at the polls has been accepted philosophically and 2 that the pledges made for the future have the True honest ring of old about them. One and All the newspapers of the far East has yet to be heard Laic the defeat to the proper unfair advantage of which has been taken by the conservative which has poisoned the mind of the populace and has traded upon a cry with one Accord they declare that As the tories have won the Day by making All sorts of promises to the Farmers the manufacturers the lumbermen and the miners of this country sir John Lac Donald should be left free at the earliest possible and appropriate moment to succeed or. Mackenzie and undertake the performance of the task he has expressed his anxiety and willingness to shoulder. Thousands of workmen who Are out of employment thousands who have Only been Able to live a pre carious existence and thousands who fancy people can be made Rich by in creasing the general taxation of this country Are impatient to see the conservatives again in Power having been led by tory orators and papers to believe that so soon As that event takes place there will be plenty of work at High it seems to be the general wish of the Reform press that no tune should be lost in putting the conservatives into the breach which they have declared their willingness and ability to defend so that the thousands of expectant canadians May see what their new masters Are going to do about the tories have Laid a special platform Down for themselves but the people care Little for that. They have been promised full pockets and bursting larders and they want nothing so much As to have these promises carried out at the Date. We join with the people in this and Tell them that they should agitate without ceasing for the better times that have been assured them. The cold nip plugs of a Canadian Winter which there is every reason to believe unusually severe have already been Felt and do time is to be lost. It therefore be Hoves the workingmen in Hamilton who Are not satisfied with the present state of affairs to Tell messes.
