Laurence a whole Sale Butcher of this City had carnally known the fourteen year old daughter of mrs. Amy e. Hebb a girl named Ellen the result of which had been the birth of a child. These auction had been accomplished under Peculiar relation. Her Mother bad become a widow and had found it necessary to Send her daughter out to service the girl being a ser vant in the House of Laurence who is a married Man. While in his employ it was alleged she had been twice improperly treated with the result already stated. Mrs. Hebb Mother of the girl was first placed on the stand. She said she resides in Jones Terrace in this City and had lived there during the past five Yean. She. Had come from England with her husband and family which consisted of two boys and two husband had been a labourer on the cup. And was killed about two Yean ago. Ellen was engaged by Laurence on the 9th of april. 1889, at a month and returned Home just one month later and gave her. Mother the Money she bad earned. She refused to return to the service of Laurence. The latter twice called on her to get Ellen to return and she had Penna ded her daughter to do so but the girl persistently refused and had finally told her just what the trouble her daughter had been delivered of a male child on the 9th of february of this year. Being Cross examined mrs. Hebb admitted that one reason Ellen did t want to return to Laurence was that the wages were not sufficient. She denied that her daughter was frequently out of the House during the even Ings or that she Ever told a or. Herbert that she bad had some trouble with her and would like to get her out of the City. She was aware that a Young Man named Jones lived near her residence but she did t know whether her daughter was acquainted with him or not. She had never seen him. Laurence s Bouse was about two Miles from her own and. When on several occasions Ellen visited Home she herself had accompanied her part of the Way Back to Laurence s. Ellen told her of the trouble just a week after leaving Laurence s employ. Witness had told or. Herbert about two week s after her daughter had left Laurence s that Laurence had insulted her daughter and she had asked Herbert to bring Laurence to her residence. Laurence came and denied the charge. Witness had never said to anyone that she had had a Good Deal of trouble with Ellen. Her daughter had told her that on three occasions the had been insulted by Lawrence the first time when he was driving her Home from witness House the his h Rose she was crying and seemed to object Tot coming. He denied having had any improper connection with her. He had been sent for by the girl s Mother after she had left his service and charged with the seduction. He then denied it and fhe Mother s answer was that she was going to have the matter tried and if she found that the girl was Gilty she would try to get _ her in prison. Witness said that the first sunday night the girl was in his employ he had seen her come towards his House with the Man Jones and pass it. This was about half past eleven or twelve o clock at night. He then saw her go behind a Straw stack and return with Jones. A Butcher named Carson was with him and saw this also. From what he saw he was satisfied the girl was not Chaste. The girl and tones were behind the stack fifteen or Twenty minutes. After he had been charged with this seduction he had gone to Ace a lawyer and had taken his advice. He denied Ever having gone to the Mother and asked that the girl be sent Back to Bis service. To or. Howell Lawrence said that the lawyer he had gone to for advice was or. Hagel. It had denied the charge to that gentleman. It was twelve o clock when he saw the girl go to the Straw stack with Jones. Joseph Canon Butcher was next called for the defence but or. Hagel objected to his evidence because he had not left the court room when the court ordered the witnesses excluded. Canon claimed that be had not heard the order and his evidence was admit Ted. Carson said he had seen the girl with Jones on the night in question. It was about half past eleven at night. His brother Lawrence and one or two others bad been with him when this occurred. They could see distinctly because it was a Moonlight night. Mrs. Lawrence wife of the defend int was next called. She had seen the girl Hebb pass her House with a Young Man on the sunday night mentioned about half past ten or eleven o clock. The girl did not come in the House until Between twelve and one o clock. Witness Hart 1 charged her at the end of the month Beau eur conduct with the men about the place who were in her husband s employ was improper. She often went to her husband s slaughterhouse and remained there with men. Witness said that the morn ing the girl left she got up about six o clock and breakfasted with her husband. Mrs. Lawrence denied Ellen s Story that she had not got up that morning until eleven o clock. If the girl bad screamed on the morning in question she certainly could have heard her. In Cross examination witness said she was certain of the hour the girl had passed her House. This closed the defence. Ellen Hebb was then recalled by the prosecution and denied the Story regarding the stack.
