In Many of the Graves rough Hen utensils evidently used for cooking were found together with a Row Heads known to have been used coast tribes extinct for centuries. At cad Boro Bay similar Mounds were excavated with like san Francisco Chromcik. By after examining the totem poles and wheat houses we cont mad exploring in other parts of Massett Village and found the inhabitants very interesting. On All bides of us there were things which pointed out Tho superiority of the Haidas Over All the Ludian races of North America and which denoted cleverness and capability. The Haidas Are skilled in carving and manipulation of Stone Clay Geld Silver Copper and Wood and the perfection of their Workin these Materi als indicates a culture of Long standing and a capacity of no mean order. Every part of their Stone and Clay works is covered with figures representing the Birds animals and fish which Are depicted on the Crest poles. Sometimes the huge Cedar columns used for building purposes Are highly and tastefully sculptured. The elate Platea and dishes in Laid with Mother of Pearl Are from a half to one Inch thick and nearly symmetrical rather deep in the concave. The edges and Centre Are beautifully carved with the Haida crests. The Massett indians still have a Stone mortar which is ground out of a Gray Basaltic Stone the Pestle in also of Stone. The mortar is used for making the ancient tobacco called know a. Or. Harrison., who has Fiven some attention to the matter Bays the Cir rings were made in Tho height of the Stone age. We also saw some of the ancient weapons of the Haidas. There were Spears with poles ten feet Long with made from the Apple tree which grows in the forests and from Banes and whalebone. There were also bows four feet Long with strings of Spruce Root Aud arrows tipped with Mussel shells ground to a Point one and a half inches Long and ingeniously fixed in the Wood. There is a native jeweler a every Village who makes from half Dollar and Dollar Silver coins and Ako Gold coins bracelets Finger rings earrings bangles Etc. The first Man to a tempt the manipulation of Silver coins waa Edenshaw the chief who is now employed in a jewelry store at Victoria. The coins Are beaten out to the desired Lii Conesa and Width and then Benin into shape and carved. Some of the bracelets fasten with clamps while others retain their shape by the natural Spring of j the Metal. The Finger rings Are Nob jointed after Beni or Bent they Are made both Plain and ornamental sometimes two hearts being carved on them. Nose rings Are still worn among these Indian. These rings give the wearers an unearthly appearance. The lobe of the nose is pierced and a piece of whalebone carved into a Semi Cular shape is inserted. The Bone a about two inches in length and three sixteenths of an Inch in diameter. Only old indians have their Ucles pierced and Seldom use the ring except when in full dress for the dance or feast. Another relic of the Savate customs now nearly extinct is the Chin Bone or Stone worn by the women. When a girl comes to years of puberty a Slit in made in Hei Chin about half an Inch below the lip and a piece of whalebone or Stone half an Inch Long Quarter of an Inch wide and sixteenth of an Inch thick is inserted in the Cut. The size of the atones is increased according to the Moorage of the Flirl and number of children she bears so that it a really a Mark of caste. When in Indian tires of his wife he sends her off pays her Uncle a certain Price in blankets and the children Are cared for by the discarded wife s Mother. The Haidas seem to be related from the lowest in rank to the supreme chief of the nation. Were in Thra Dom until quite recently do not rack. These slaves Vicere formerly bought Aud sold like dogs but within the past twelve years the Mia Fonaries have succeeded in Induc ing the indians to free their slaves. Before the Advent of the missionaries a Haida chief had one or More wives with female slaves for concubines. The children from free born wives wore alone reckoned As his the children of the slaves being sold or retained in Slavey As he desired. The Mem Bers of one tribe cannot with another of the same tribe for instance a Frog cannot marry a Frog but must marry a whale or a Etc. The Cedar tree which grows to perfection in this latitude furnishes the Haida with everything he needs int of tied. From the tree he secures the rafters Aad boards for his House and the columns for Hie totem poles and the logs for his Canoe. The Tough Fibre of the inner hark furnishes material for rope and twine of great by renal hand also for plaiting Mats clothing baskets Etc. The outside bark is used for roofing wigwams and is Waterproof. The roots Are used for twine fish Hooks and other purposes. The Young Cedar is used for ribbing canoes. Tribes and individuals Are named after natural obstacles the same lie All aboriginal races. The intellectual Power and mental processes of these people Excel the Ordinary class of indians on the North Pacific coast. Their language contains More words than any other Indian and is Moat difficult to master. It is said that Rev. Or. Harrison is the Only White Man who under stands their language. He has compiled a dictionary pm pricing ten thousand words. If compared with ,, indians in British co Lumbia and Aja Eka they will be placed at the head in respect to physique and mental activity they Are neither stupid or foolish. When asked to think of things outside their own intellectual world they Are quite to acknowledge themselves powerless and1 willing to to taught. The Young people Are eager to be taught any fresh subject and also Civ Ince a determination to master their books. At the women Are physically remarkable. The men a tractate Tention by their size and apparent strength and by the fullness and agreeable Jese of their features. Some of Thorn Are six feet four inches Taj and their bodies Are developed in per feet proportions. They Are Export seamen and can sail their Hou Yant Cedar canoes a a storm that would be dangerous for ships. They have Copper coloured complexions but borne of them Are As Black As africans. The women share the Pood qualities of themen some them Are tall while others Are under the average stature of womankind. They Are exceedingly Strong they Cut Wood sail and paddle canoes and work equally As Haid As the men. They have handsome and agreeable features comparatively speaking. They Are not so dark As the men. They Drees in prints and no5 a few of them Wear bonnets and head kerchiefs. Before the i arrival of Whites their clothing was scanty. They wore petticoats made of the roots of Oeder and Spruce. The men now Purchase goad Tweed clothes and the women ind Ilse in the luxury of prints Ging hams and and then in Silks. Old main Are sometimes seen Early in the morning wrapped in their blankets but they soon have to dress in pants to escape the ridicule of their grown up Qona and Daugh ters. Little Wear a Cotton dress Only and the Little boys run about in shirts unless when going to see Whitemen when they dress specially for the of Olasion. The Meu and women seem to pay considerable attention to their personal adornment. They Are proud of the mass of Brilliant coarse Black hair which nature has provided them with. The men Cut their hair periodically and Endeavor to cultivate Monst achols and whiskers in imitation of the Whites. The older men have not a single of tier on their faces. The women dress their hair in braids or knots at the Back of the head and in Bangs for the Hudson s Bay company has supplied them with Curling Tonge. Their Glass beads Are riving Way to Silver and Gold ornaments which will soon be valuable a curiosities As the present generation is the ancient Haidas. And it May truthfully be added that if the indians in the entire coast do nol take better care of themselves than they have done in the past not Only will the White Man s clothing and ornaments supersede the old garments Aud gew Gaws but they themselves their villages and their Hunting grounds will soon disappear and their places be occupied by those whom they Are now of fond of imitating.
