Joseph Martin to the editor of the free press threatening to prosecute him for libel unless an immediate correction was made of a classification of candidates in which that gentleman waa designated of a Liberal. To be smelt was More particularly for the purposes of election then on that he wanted this put in but there must have Boen Strong feeling at the Bottom of in when he was prepared to take an action at Law to set himself right. For the purposes of the election in which he is now engaged we sup pose it will be permitted us to refer to him is a Liberal without running the Riak of such dire consequences As he wag ready to Meto ou1 to us on the first occasion. We shall scarcely a that however for obvious reasons Al though willing enough to go to fur As to Call him the Liberal nominee there being with persons of his kind and on occasion a very Broad distinction Between personal convictions and that political expediency can a made to a party Nomina Tion. Or. Martin in a Liberal when it suits him and when it does Nob he is will info to go into court to prove that he is some thing else. There is one thing however which he always is without the semblance of or possibility of is always on the Lookout for number one. There were a number of honest liberals at be convention which nominated or Martin m candidate for Selkirk or rather at the convention which appointed a committee to labor until the Early bears in the morning to induce Home one to accept a nomination and which finally prevailed upon or Martin in default of any body else. He was named after the Largo majority of the delegates had gone to their Homes otherwise there is reason to Bolive he would not be Able to Comfort himself with this new distinction. Those liberals cannot but be interested in the Binscarth ii in Juht Tiisik of the Proftay Jerlim a Frt Jimr it dirtied out. Elijah is translated Over the hits to jail. It May Nob be particularly pathetic but there is much to excite sympathy in the spec Tacle of two members of the Imperial House of commons who Are among the Ablest and most respected of the Irish representatives returning to England to surrender Thoms ulves to the police authorities in order that they May b0 conveyed to jail to serve a six months term of imprisonment. On thursday or. Dillon and or. Win. O Brien crossed Over from France and at Folkestone gave them selves up co the police. They were immediately taken to London and after a delay of a few hours the officers started with Thorn to Ireland and by this time they Are no doubt safely imm ured in Clonmel jail. These gentlemen have been guilty of no crime known to the common Law of England they have committed neither a felony nor a Misdemeanour. In the struggle for Home Rule in which the Irish people Are engaged the majority decided on a certain plan of Campaign by which they hoped to arouse the at Tention of the rest of the United kingdom to Trio wrongs under which they claim to be suffering. The Salisbury government determined to meet this with a policy of Coer Cion and to carry it out the More effectually took Power to prohibit All Public meetings in proclaimed districts. This meant that the Imp people were not to be allowed to meet quietly and peaceably to discuss their own grievances. Agitation however was the great card of the Irish and this official prohibition was defied whenever possible. A few months ago Anu Berof the parliamentary Lead ers including messes. Dillon and part in a proclaimed meeting. Some half dozen or More were arrested nearly All of whom wore sentenced to imprisonment. Just previous to this a delegation wan appointed to visit America in the interests of Home Rule. Or. Dillon and or. O Brien were of the num Ber and As it was thought that the prosecutions were for the purpose of heading off the delegation they managed to elude the vigilance of the police and escaped to France whence they afterwards proceeded to America. The Parnoll Era Broglio altered a 1 their plans and they returned to France in the has evidently proved a vain restoring London feb. 13 at 2.45 this morning to policeman on duty at Chambers Street Whitechapel found the dead body of a Young woman with her Throat Cut from ear to ear. The attached to the body by a Small strip of skin. The body has been identified As a woman of the pavements known As car ratty about 25 years old. The report of urn discovery of the body spread like a i Lect Rio and the place who soon thronged with hundreds of dissolute men and women. The Gen eral appearance of the woman and the style of her Elthos which Watro of fair Quality and Lay in an orderly Fishio about her body indicated that in Fife Nho had belonged to the class of abandoned women. The police believe that the woman was while standing talking to her is Nocite and that the Ripper had no time whatever to inflict the Peculiar mutilations which Hii Vii heretofore characterized Hii Sav Ngo but Cheries. Approaching footsteps they think caused him to take flight. When the body arrived at the Whitechapel Morf Curry the blood was found to to Utill warm. As soon the body was discovered the police immediately cleared away Che blood stains in Che Hope of restraining the sinister curiosity of the rapidly gathering crowds. A railway Man has been found who states that As to passed through Swallow Garden this morning just before the murder he saw the victim standing a the archway engaged in conversation with a Man who had oho appear Ance of being a foreign Seaman. Edward Bradford has at an Opportunity to prove the Wisdom of Home Secretary Matthews in appointing him commissioner of metropolitan police. His reputation for suppressing thug ism in India has a Good Deal to do with his selection for his present office and it is believed that that Man who brought to Justice and virtually exterminated the cunning murderers of Rajputana would not to a tied like his predecessor in of the White Chapel Assassin. The police and Public profess to be confident that he will unearth the murder of Crotty Nell and Public opinion is equally confident that the incur Gererin Jack the Ripper being arrested red handed Thau Ever before. Experts who have studied the former crimes of the Ripper say there a no doubt that this latest murder must Ibe added to the list of that wretch s enormities. Like the others this woman belonged to that unfortunate class and like Thorn she was not of the vilest Grade in that clans. Another Eimilia Rity is in the location of the crime which was committed in a place comparatively Public and yet screened from immediate observation. The unfortunate women of Whitechat Pel who had got Over the terror created by the murder of some time time ago Aro again fear stricken and gather in groups to discuss the latest tragedy and wonder who will be the victim. The location of the tragedy is near the City Boundary in thy Vicinity of the docks and Viler in some respects then the scenes of the Ripper a former crimes be info often resorted to by men and women who do not care to seek accommodation in lodgings. For this reason had not the officer actually stumbled Over the body the Ripper might have returned to his horrible work after the policeman and phased and the officer s statement indicated that the murderer was waiting in the darkness with this object when frightened into Retreat by the officer s detection of the body. Home Rule May mean dismember ment of the Empire As its enemies claim and the Irish May to an unreasonable turbulent and disloyal people.
