Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - March 30, 1891, Winnipeg, Manitoba Manitoba daily free press. Winnipeg March 30. 3 easter Seemon come see the the place lord where of tic Loq font by course delivered on sunday. March by the t. Witt of the on split her. Fonk March Talmage reached an Kaster Sermon to his two audiences today. Both at the morning service in Brookli n and at the Christian Herald service in new York in Tho evening Tho academics of music were Bright with a profusion of Flowers easter lilies being conspicuous. Selection of music appropriate to the festival was beautifully Ren dered at ouch service. Tho Lext of the preach or s discourse was Matthew xxviii a see the Placo where the lord visiting any great City we Are not Satis fed until we have also looked at its Heinc styles of Cenotaph mausoleum sarcophagus crypt Imd sculpture. Hero lies buried a statesman Yogi scr an orator Here a poet out there an inventor in some other Placo a great Pui. but with How much greater interest and with More depth of emotion w6 icon upon our family plot in the Ceme Tery. In Tho Ono Case it is a matter of pub Lic interest in the other in is a matter of private and Heartfelt affection. But around the grave at which to halt this morning there Aro gathered All kinds of stupendous interest. At this sepulchre i have to Tell this sepulchre there was buried a King a conqueror an emancipator a Friend a brother a Christ. Mon Arch of Tho . But Bone of our Bone Andl Elshof our Ash and sorrow of our sorrow and heart of our heart. Come Seo the place where the lord Tiik Mazok of Joseph. It has for surroundings the minor in the suburbs of Jerusalem a Manor owned by a wealthy gentleman by the name of Joseph. To was one of Tho court of severity who had condemned Christ Tut i think he had voted in the negative or Baing a timid Man had been absent at Tho time of the casting of Tho vote. To had Laid out the parterre at great expense. It was a hot Clira aus and i suppose there Wero Broad branched Trees and winding paths under Neath them while Here Tho Waters rippled Over Tho Rock into a us Pool and yonder the vines and Tho Flowers clambered Over Tho Wall and All around there were the beauties of Kiosk and arboriculture. After the fatigues of Tho Jerusalem courtroom How refreshing to come out in these suburbs botanical Aud Youlio logical i walk a Litho further on in to parterre Anil i Como across u Cluster of rocks and i Tec on them the a corks of a sculptor s chisel. I come still closer i find that there is a subterranean recess and i walk Down the Marble stairs and come to a port Ico Over the architecture of Raits and Flowers chiselled by Tho hand of the sculptor. I go into the portico and on either Side there Aro rooms two or four or six rooms of Rock in Tho niches each Niche Largo enough to hold a dead body. Ono of Tocao rooms of Rock is especially wealthy with sculpture. It was a Beautiful and charming spot. Why All this the fact was that Joseph the owner of the parterre of that wealthy Manor had recognized Tho fact that lie could not always walk those gardens and he sought this As his own last resting place. What a Beautiful plot in which to wait for the resurrect soul Mark Well this mausoleum. Mark Well Tho mausoleum in Tho Rook. It is to be Tho most celebrated Tomb in All the Ages catacombs of Egypt Tomb of Napoleon mahal Taj of India nothing compared with it Christ had just been murdered and his body must to thrown ont to Tho dogs and Tho Ravens As was customary with crucified bodies unless there be prompt and effective hindrance. Joseph the Owuje of Tho mausoleum begs for Tho body of Christ and he takes and washes Tho poor and mutilated Frame from the blood and the dust and shrouds it and perfumes it. I think embalm ment was omitted. When in Olden times they wished to embalm a body the priest with some pretension of medical skill would show Tho Point be tween thu ribs where Tho incision was to a Milo. Then the operator would Como and make Tho incision and then run for his life else to would to slain for violating Tho dead body. Then Tho other priests would Como with Salt of Niter and Cassia and wine of Palm tree Aud Complete the embalm ment. But i think in this Case pm Ballment was omitted lest Thoro be Moro excitement and another riot. The funeral advances. Present Joseph the owner of the mausoleum Nicodemus who brought the Flowers and Tho two marys heavy Bur Den on Tho shoulders of two men As they carry Tho body of Down the Marble stairs Aud into Tho portico and lift the dead weight to Tho level of the Niche a Tho Rock Aud push Tho body of Christ into the Only pleasant resting place it Ever bad. These men coming Forth close Tho door of Rock against the recess. Tho government afraid that Tho disciples would steal the body of Christ and play resurrection put upon Tho door the of Tho Sanhedrin the that Seal like Tho violation of the Seal of the United states govern ment or of the British government always followed with severe penalties. Flu guard of the Tomii. A regime at of soldiers from the Tower of Antonio a detailed to in turd that icum. At the door of that Tomb a fight took place which decided Tho question for graveyards and cemeteries. Sword of lightning against sword of steel. of god against the military. The body in Tho crypt begins to move in its shroud of Fine Linen and slides Down upon Tho pavement troves through thu portico appears in the doorway comes up Tho Marble Steps. C Christ. Having left his mortuary attire to Hind him comes Forth it garb of a Workman As 1 take it from Tho fact that Tho women mistook him for the Gardener. There Aud then wus shattered Tho Tomb so that it can never be rebuilt. Ail Tho trowels of earthly masonry cannot mend it forever and forever it is a broken Tomb. Death that Day taking Tho Side of Tho military received a horrible Cut under Tho Spear of Dame and must Hira Seli go Down at Tho Tho King of Tor rows disappear no before the King of Grace. Tho lord is Ilos annal 0 weep no Moro your comforts slain Tho la re boil to lives again. When our of Tho old christians was dying he said to saw on the sky the letter Anil to said i Carnot understand what that is i Sec against the sky it is Tho letter a " a Christian standing beside my said "1 know what it Means that let Ter v stands for Victory i gather up ill theoc Lowers today and i strew them Over the Graves of your Christian dead in us letter a for a for to for a Tho lord is to while standing around the Placo where the lord Lay 1 am impressed with the fact that mortuary honors cannot atone for wrongs to Tho living. If they could Homo afforded Christ each a costly Seoul Cor they could have afforded Taim a decent oar they residence. Will they give a piece of Marble to the dead Christ when they Aig it have Given a soft Pillow to the Liv ing Christ if they Hod half the sex pc so of that mausoleum in the making of Christ s life of Earth comfortable the Story would not have been so sad. To wanted bread they gave him a Stone. Christ like every other Benefactor of Tho world was bettor appreciated after to was Westminster Abbey mental Greenwood Aro to a certain extent the world s attempts by mortuary honors to atone for neglects to the living. Poets Corner in Westminster Abbey is an at tempt to pay for the sufferings of grab Street. I go into that poets Corner of Westminster Abbey and there i find Tho grave of Handel the musician from whose music we hear today As Ift goes Down reverberating through the Ages. While i stand at Tho costly Tomb of Han Del i cannot forget Tho fact that his fellow musicians tried to destroy him with their discords. I go a Little farther in the poets Corner of Westminster Abbey and i find Tho grave of John Dryden the great poet. Costly Monument great mortuary honors but i cannot forget the fact that at seventy years of age he wrote about the oppressions of misfortune and that he made n contract for a thousand verses at sixpence a line. I go to Hule farther in the poets Corner and i find the grave of Sam Uel Butler the author of wonderful Monument costly mortuary honors. Where did to die in a Garret. I move farther on in poets Corner and i find the Grav-3 of a poet of whom Waller wrote an old schoolmaster by Tho name of John Milton has written a tedious volume on the fall of Man. If it s length to no virtue it has i go a Little farther on in the poets Corner and i find the grave of Sheridan. Alas for Sheridan. Poor Sec Ridall magnificent mortuary honors. What a pity it was to could not have discounted that Monument for a Mouthful of something to eat children give your old parents less Tomb stones and More blankets less funeral and Moro bedroom five per cent of Tho Money now expended at Burns banquets would have made Tho great scotch poet Comfort Able and kept him from Baing almost har ried to death by the Drudgery of in excise Man. Plora tse abused while to out to his Tomb was followed by Tho president of the United states Aud Tho leading men of the army and the Navy. Some people could not say bitter enough things about him while he lived All Tho world Rose up to do him Honor when he died. Massachusetts at Tho Tomb of Charles Sumner tried to atone for Tho ignominious resolutions with which her legislature denounced Tho living senator. It was too late. The costly Monument at Springfield illy., cannot pay for Booth s Bullet. Costly mortuary honors on the Banks of Lake that Cost be tween and pay for the assassination of James a. Garfield. Do Justice to the living. All Tho Justice you do you will have to do this Sida Tho Gates of the necropolis. The dead cannot Wake lip to the number of carriages in Tho or see Tho polish on Tho Aberdeen Granite or to read Tho words of epitaph no commemoration. Costly mausoleum of Tho gentleman in the suburbs of Jerusalem cannot atone for Bethlehem s Manger and Alvarean Cross Aud Pilate s Ruffian judiciary. Appropriate ornamkxt5 i or tombs. Again standing in this place where the lord Lay i am impressed with the fact that Coral and sculptural ornamentation Are appropriate for the places of the dead. We Are All glad that in the Short time of the Saviour s inh mation he Lay amid Flowers and sculpture. I cannot quite understand what i Seo in the newspapers where amid the announcements and of a cynics the friends request Send no flow Why there is no place so appropriate for Flowers As the casket of the de purred. If your Means repent if your Means there be Flowers on the casket Flowers on the Hearse Flowers on Tho grave. Put them on the brow it Means Coronation. Put them in the hand it Means Victory Christ was buried in a parterre. Christ was buried in n Garden. Flowers arc types of resurrection. Death is sad enough anyhow. Let conservatory ind arboretum do All they can in the Way of alleviation. Your Little girl loved flow is while she was put them in her hands now that she cannot go Forth and Pluck Flowers for herself. On sunshiny lays twist a Garland for her still heart. Brooklyn has glory than her Greenwood Noil Boston than her mount nor Philadelphia than her Laurel ii ill nor Cinci Natl than her Spring Grove for son Francisco than her Lone Moun Tain. What shall i say of those country graveyards where Tho vines have fallen Down and the slab is slant and the. Mound is caved in and grass is the pasture ground for the Sexton s cattle. Are your father and Mother of so Little account Yon have no More respect than that for their is some Day gather together and straighten up Tho Fence and lift Tho slab and Bank up the Mound and tear out Tho weeds and Plant Tho shrubs. After a while you yourself will wait to lie Down to the last slumber. If you have no re Gard for the Bones of you ancestors your children will have no deference for your Bones. Do you say these relics Are of no importance you will see of How much importance they Are when the archangel takes out his trumpet. Turn All your graveyards into gardens. Four Oslo a beset at the Dumual. Standing in this place whom the lord Lay i am also impressed with Tho dignity of a pretending obsequies. Joseph that Day was Mourner Sexton the entire charge of All the occasion. Four people Only at the burial of the King of the . Let this be consolatory to those who through Small Means or Lack of Large acquaintance have but Little Demon stration of grief at Tho grave of their dead. It is not necessary. Long line of glittering equipage two rows of Silver handles Cas Ket of costly Wood pall bearers scarfed and gloved Are not necessary. Christ looks out from heaven at a burial where there Are six in attendance and re members there Aro two Moro than he had at his obsequies. Not recognizing this idea How Many Small properties Aio scattered in the funeral rites and widowhood and orphanage out to the cold Charity of the world. The departed left enough property to have kept the family together until they could take Cave of themselves but it is All absorbed in the funeral rites. That went for Crape which ought to have gone for bread. A Man of Small Means can hardly afford to die. In Ono of our great cities funeral pageantry is not necessary. No our was Ever More lovingly and tenderly put into the grave than Christ but there Wero Only four in Tho procession. Again standing in this Placo where the lord Lay i am impressed with the fact that you cannot keep the dead Down. The Seal of Tho Sanhedrin a regiment of soldiers from the Tower or Antonio to stand guard floor of Rock roof of Rock Wall of Rock Khe of Rock cannot keep Christ in Tho crypt. Come out and Como up to must. Came out and came no to did. Pref Girra Tion. The first fruits of them that sleep. Just As certain As you and i go Down into the grave Jasso certain to will Como up again. Though you pile up on the top of us All Tho boulders of Tho mountains you cannot keep us Down. Though we to buried under the Coral of Tho deepest Cav can of the Atlantic Ocean we will Rise to Tho surface. A i my friends death and the grave arc not what they used to be to us for now walking around the spot where the lord Lay to find vines and Flowers covering up the Tomb and that which we called a place of skulls has become a Beautiful Garden. Yea Ryew there Are four gardens instead of of eder., Garden of the world s sepulchre Garden of Earth s re generation Garden of heaven. With trumpets ant shouting. Various scriptural accounts say that the work of grave breaking will begin with the of trumpets and shouting whence i take it that the first intimation of Tho Day will be a sound from heaven such As has never before been heard. It May not be to very loud there Are mausoleums so deep that undisturbed silence has slept there Ever since the Day the sleepers were left in them. The great noise shall Striko through them. Among the corals of the sea Miles deep where the shipwrecked rest the sound will strike. No one will mistake it for Thunder or the blast of earthly minstrelsy. There will be heard the voice of the uncounted millions of Tho dead who come Rushing out of Tho Gates of Etc Unity flying toward the Tomb crying make Wayl of grave give us Back our body to gave it to you in corruption to Ronder it now in incur thousands of spirits arising from the Field of Sedan and from among the rocks of Gettysburg and from among Tho passes of South Mountain. A Hundred thousand Aro crowding Greenwood. On this grave three spirits meet for there were three bodies in that Tomb Over that fam ily vault Twenty spirits hover for there Wero Twenty bodies. From new York to Liverpool at every few Miles on the sea route a group of hundreds of spirits coming Down to the water to meet their bodies. See that multitude that is where Tho Central America Sank. And yonder multitude that is where the Pacific went Down. Found at lost that is where the City of Boston Sank. Aud yonder Tho president went Down. A Soli tary spirit alights on yonder that is where a traveler perished in Tho Snow. Tho whole air is full of fit aug North spirits flying South spirits Fly ing East spirits flying West. Crash goes Westminster Abbey As nil its dead icings and orators and poets get ii. Strange commingling of spirits searching among the ruins William Wilberforce the Good and Queen Elizabeth the bad. I Ash go Tho pyramids und the monarchs of Egypt Rise out of Tho heart of the desert. Snap go Tho Iron Gates of Tho modern vaults. The country graveyard will look like a rough slowed fled As Tho Mounds break open. A Tho Kings of the Earth All Tho senators All the great men All Tho beggars All Tho and vanquished All Tho and civilized All Hobo who were chopped by Guil Lotine or simmered in Tho fire or rotted in dungeons All Tho infants of a Day All the i All not one Straggler left behind. All All and now the Nir is darkened with Tho fragments of bodies that Are coming to Gether from Tho opposite Corners of the Earth. Lost limbs find Ling their mate Bone to Bone sinew to every joint is reconstructed and every Arm finds its socket and the amputated limb of the surgeon s table shall to set again at the Point from which it was severed. A sur Geon told to tacit after the Battle of Bull run he amputated limbs throwing them out of the window until Tho pile reached up to the window Bill. All those frag merits will have to Taku their places. Those who were born Blind shall have eyes divinely kindled those who were lame shall have a limb substituted. In All the hosts of Tho resurrected not one Eye missing not one foot clogged not Ono Arm pal sick not our Tuguo dumb not one car Leaf peace toward heaven and cart ii. Wake up my friends this Day this glorious easter morning with All these congratulations if i understand this Day it Means peace toward heaven and peace toward Earth. Great wealth of Flowers bring Moro Flowers. Wreath them around the Brazen Throat of Tho Cannon Plant them in the deserts until it shall Blossom like the Rose braid them into the mane of the Wiir Charger Asho comes Back. No More red dahlias of human blood. Give us White lilies of peace. Strew All Tho Earth with easter garlands for Tho resurrection we celebrate this morning implies All kinds of , a score of resurrections. Resurrection from death and sin to the life of the gospel. Resurrection of Apos Tolic Faith. Resurrection of commercial integrity. Resurrection of National Honor resurrection of International Goodwill. Resurrection of Art. Resurrection of literature. Resurrection of everything that is Good and kind and generous and just Aud holy and Beautiful. Nothing to stay Down to Stiny buried but sin und darkness and pain and disease and revenge and death. Let those Tarry in the grave forever. Glory to god in Tho highest and on Earth peace Socol will to Christ Tho lord is risen today. Sons of men and Angels say. 1-Taisi your to pigs and triumphs High Kim to heavens and Earth reply. Love s redeeming work is done. Fought Tho fight Tho Battlo won. The a Xvi s eclipse a o Erlo to sets in blood no More. How Are made fireproof material is placed be tween Iron sheets. How got her shoes. The revival meeting at the first Metho dist Church was called u want meeting ant was conducted by Abe Mulkey. The preacher said in the course of his talk my wife s shoes Wero worn out and she i ought to have Somo shoes i am ashamed of Iny feet i answered Louisa you shall have them i had t a cent but i crawled up in Tho stable loft and said of lord Louisa needs some shoes please give them to her. Don t you know you said seek first to kingdom of god and All things shall be now lord we have sought please give Louisa some shoes in Dentont 011 the Street and met Del Richardson and he said Why hello Abe i i e got religion sixteen ounces to the Pound and i said thank god Del i have got it thirty six inches to Tho Yard and Ico cents to the Dollar lie said Abo when you were in the grocery business i left owing you thirty five dollars i whispered thank lie continued but i Ain t got a cent i sorter Swunk up. I said Del what have you he said a bully crop of wheat growing i asked will you give me a mortgage on lie will we walked up to Tho lawyer s office and fixed up Tho papers. Then i stepped into c. Pickett s and said c. D., what is that to an swered one Hundred cents on Tho Dollar i said give me some shoes for Louisa did you Ever notice How c. Fellow will March Homo about Christmas with the strings of a pair of shoes hanging Over his Finger they Aro for his wife about num Ber fives. That s the Way i wont and Louisa has t been out of shoes since. Ask for what you news. In ii Small town of Northern Vermont Tho inhabitants Are noted for their Early marriages. An unmarried Young woman who has passed her Twenty fifth birthday is universally regarded As Art old and a Young Man who has reached the same age in an unwed cd Stato is pronounced n confirmed Bachelor and to Young people themselves appear to accept Tho current opinion. Ono handsome Young fellow Twenty six years old was u great trial to Hiu Mother a bustling energetic Fanner s wife. As who lamented to a Hummer Boarder it did seem us if i rain was possessed to stay no matter what she could say. An taint she would Odd fret fully that any girl will be Takin up with him after a year or , when he s settled Down an to look Hiram himself was not Yieu to senti ment and furthermore was quite unconscious of his own attractions. He showed the summer Boarder some dreadful photo graphs of himself which had been taken the previous Winter to please his Mother and remarked gravely Mother was set on Havia us an 1 Only waited to Sec if i in n t Likely to get any better Lookin. But come last Winter i Sec i was beginning to fade so i had took right Wayl the contrast Between the speaker s youth Ful appearance and Iii words was almost too much for his com Panion. Janci Connor a Typo founder to first Iron Ono in Kundu of mixtures Aro used for Lar proof safes. The earliest Stylo of Saft known was made in heavy Oak or other Hardwood boxes or chests. They were bound on the Corners and across the top and front with Iron bands studded with nulls. Iron plates were eventually made to cover Tho outside of Tho Chest and nailed to Tho Wood. To foundation of the plan upon which fire proof safes Aro still constructed was Laid by a Richard Scott in 1601. Tho improve ment previous to 1s25 was to make the Chest of soft Wood in thicker body soaked in brine. After thoroughly soaking Bolli Tho inside and outside shells sheets of Iron Woro fastened inside and outside with Large nails or spikes. The idea and principle was that Tho moisture in the Wood upon Tho application of Bent would produce steam and prevent to Interior and its contents reaching a temperature of 212 legs. Delo that Point paper ol1 every description will 50 preserved i Rore damage either to the fiber of the material or to Tho writing which May be upon its these principles of Tho steam producing Quality and the Reliance upon this Quali a is the principal element in the manufacture of All safes of the present Day though different materials May be Vised to produce the same result. James Conner a Type founder of this City about 1820-32 invented an Iron Strong Box with a double Shell having As a filling plaster of Paris mixed with water. Later the shells wore lined with sheets of Mica pasted on paper and filled with burned Clay or sawdust Aud charcoal. Plaster retained the moisture successfully but was so destructive to to thin Iron shells that Iti use was abandoned. Connor allowed i invention to lapse and a Man named fits. Gerald in 1843 obtained new letters Patent on Tho same kind of a Safe. Some old safes. William Marr of in 1834, was the first to Patent method of construct iou for safes. In 1833 Charles Chubb of Tho Samo City used concentric linings of Iron plates tilled in Between with Wood ashes or other slow conducting materials of a nature to retard the transmission of beat. In 1848 letters Patent were granted to the messes. Tann for the use of pounded Alum and Gypsum previously heated and cooled us n fire resisting medium. In 1840 Thorn As Milner had patented a plan to fill the jacket formed by the double plates with sawdust in which Wen packed it number of Small tubes filled with an alkaline Solu Tion and hermetically sealed or crystals of Alum or soda com bin ing from co per cent water cry stylization. In of Firo Tho Safe heating tubes would burst or Tho crystals would melt and saturate with water Tho sawdust steam thus produced by Tho heat would pass into the inner Safe and protect its con tents if inflammable for a Long time. George Price of Wolverhampton England in 1855, tried Tho plan of coating Metal sur faces exposed to Tho filling with a compos Tion to prevent corrosion and then used powdered Alum and sawdust As a filler. Previous to this in 1849, dry plaster and a common Grade of Alum or Potash Alum wan found to be of value As a non conductor of heat. Plaster was used for its non con Ductor Quality Aud Alum for the Largo pro portion of water it contains in Crystalina Tion. To same heat which produced steam also fused or disintegrated Alum releasing Tho moisture and producing the requisite steam qualities. Tho principal argument that might to used against this combination would be that Alum in fusing almost entirely disappears. Thus a vacuum is left to take the place of which there is nothing to support Tho outer Frame of Tho Safe. The outer Frame must remain intact in order to retain the steam. Modern safes. In another mixture of similar character at this time was included Marble dust and refuse of soda manufactories. When this material was heated it was supposed to produce carbonic acid Gas. Tho Gas was to subdue or extinguish fro or flames in the immediate Vicinity by reducing the temperature. Still another material used is a filler was pulverized Hydraulic Cement which embraced the several qualities of the plaster and Alum. This material is a non conductor of heat and contains water in Large quantities unlike the dry plaster and Alum it is a solid having a crushing strength in itself of several Hundred pounds to Tho Square Inch. The extraction of Tho moisture by any degree of heat that can possibly to produced in an accidental Firo leaves the filling solid and intact. The volume is neither increased nor decreased so there is no Strain on the Frame which covers it. Most of Tho fireproof fifes of the present Day Are made of wrought Iron plates and angles on the outer and inner frames. The usual thickness of the Walls is from five and a hair to six inches. Combination locks Are used almost universally yet locks Are Tho exception. The number of safes produced by the manufacturers has largely increased in later . Burglar proof safes Are distinct from fireproof safes in material construction and the object for which they Are built. The Walls Are composed of High and Low grades of steel which when tempered will Tho most powerful Drill. But it is an error to suppose that a Safe which provides Security from the burglar s Drill is for that reason sufficiently protected from burglars who Are properly fitted for no attack upon a Bank Safe or vault. Recent experience has demonstrated that other methods Are More expeditious involving less risk for Tho operators and Are frequently move certain of Success. Wedges inserted across one Edge of a door and driven Home by repeated blows of a Ham Mer retain on each wedge the combined strength of blow struck. Tho inclined plane of the wedge being Tho four Dation principle of All mechanical Power has proved in numerous successful Bank burglaries to be a most potent Factor in Tho Art of Safe breaking. Wedges Aro frequently used also in breaking Ami removing the spindle which connects tie combi Misiou Knob and the lock. Thus is left an opening for an explosion of powder which makes Short work in demolishing the sometimes the body of the Safe or the door my be torn apart by other methods such As stripping Tho Plato and lifting Tho door from its socket by screw Globe t hmm the safes Madre e Hijo the t sweetest Madre e Hijo smoke.
