Then tvo men had a fit. A Man just had a fit up Here High did Yon look at him yes no dispatch. She has achieved a Good Deal in try Ere a Pioneer in n now Lino work for Tho work Alai Hor life. By All Odds Tho woman whose name a now most closely connected with Tho Type writer As a Means enabling girls to obtain a living is miss Mary f. Seymour who has nearly Twenty typewriters constantly employed upon salary with from five to fifty others piece work. Miss Seymour has been in business in new York for twelve years and business Success has achieved distinction As the first woman notary whose appointment was recognized As valid in this state and As the successful editor and publisher business Wom an s journal a most Gates Ful Publica Tion now in its second year. I found miss Seymour the other Day in Otic her three offices where amid the Clatter and tinkle half a dozen typewriters. Miss Seymour told me Tho Story How she came to go into business for herself. I began business us a stenographer and Law she said fifteen years ago and practice that alone before 1 went in to typewriting. 1 started a business both in new York and in . My Mother was quite n philanthropist and i was brought up to do a great Deal Benevo Lent work and in that Way i suppose i acquired Somo executive ability. I began by teaching school first to support myself but it was unpleasant work and i wanted to get out it. She got a stall. J i had a Friend who employed in expert j woman stenographer in new York and he advised me to Tuko up stenography. At that time stenographers charged High Price us Rhode were comparatively few Good ones Iid she was earning a Good in come. I went to her when i thought i knew enough for practical work and she dictated to my some Legal notes. When i brought Back the copy Alie laughed. It was very much out the proper form but it was accurate. I w worked with her for some time just for the experience and had Hopes a partnership Somo Day but we separated be cause i would not work sunday. I went to . Munson the Well known stenographer for employment and tried a great Many offices in new York. Then i took to reporting lectures for the newspapers which filled up some my time while waiting for something better. Thuro was it lawyer in Jersey City who had Boon counsel for n relative mine in a suit for which he got a fee Aud i called upon him. He said he would dictate to me a Law paper and if i was successful in that i could have All the work the office. People outside Tho profession do not know that writing shorthand and Reading it Are two separate qualifications. The lawyer dictated Tho paper to me and i took it Down without any difficulty. I went Home. All the abstruse and complicated documents a Law paper is i think the worst. That evening 1 attempted to read my notes. Some 1iakd tasks. Fortunately for my future career my brother was a lawyer. I called him to the Rescue. Through his assistance i presented to the lawyer a very accurate copy the paper and secured a desk there finally obtaining so much work that i employed two Young men to assist me. I was fascinated with the work and often sat up All Iii pfc in order not to break n Promise about delivering my notes. I remember one instance where i worked two nights and three Days with three stenographers to help to without sleeping at All except for Little naps and taking but a few minutes for meats in Der to get some papers ready for a certain time. When i first saw the advertisement the typewriter i thought stenographers were doomed. I examined the machine and after that Felt no fear in regard to Ite Competition. I saw that it would be a valuable Aid. In 1880 i was offered desk room in the office judge Pratt new York. I was timid about facing the publicity a Large office full men and decided to wait for orders and work at Home. About three months experience in waiting for Worl and getting Little cured me my Folly and satisfied to that a business woman must adapt herself to business rules. I then opened i Little office my own Broad Way and started the typewriting business by writing out my own notes the machine i was the first Law reporter who made n practice doing this in new York. Shortly before i started my office i met a Young lady who had been brought up in Lux re and who Hod been thrown upon her own resources. She attempted teaching and foiled. She tried Many other things and even wont into a factory working for threw dollars n week. How her business has grown. It was the knowledge this girl s experience that partly induced me to Start a business in which i could employ others. After buying my typewriter i sent word to this Yoi Uig lady and she after practising the machine was Tho first one i employed in my business. Another girl whom i employed to run errands began to practice the machine and i taught heir also. She was about fifteen sixteen years old at that time the first these Young ladies now Earna a year in a Large Law office and Tho second is consid ered one the experts new York and is paid a still higher salary. Gradually my business increased so that i found it almost impossible to carry out my original intention which was to do perfect work. Women have been so often accused inaccuracy and a Businesslike habits that i meant to show something different. Finally i had to Start a train ing school in order to get competent assistants. 1 introduced an employment Bureau Branch in my business and Cou ducted it the principle that i would get places Only for those who had passed a a examination and been found competent. Today i suppose we have in new York about women earning a living by Wor s in offices which formerly fell to to Ujj men and there is no part my business that has afforded me so much satisfaction As the instruction department. I have had Tho pleasure seeing Yogi by who have come Here wit i no ideas business now occupying positions Trust in some the largest firms in this City. Many them Are earning from fifteen to Twenty dollars a week and one los salary a year. When i business All women considered Moie less unfit for Down town work. 1 find now that there is Moro demand for Young women than for voting men As stenographers. This is due partly to the fact that they work cheaper but in Many in stances employers Tell me that they Coli Sider women More trustworthy and More Likely to stay than Young Yort Cor.
