A fair sized River was said to be running Down the main Street at Fincher Creek and the same Stream was swimming at Smith s ranch about five Miles above the town. The St. Mary s was terrible to behold and Lee s Creek could not contain itself Between its two Banks the Low lying ground on both sides being under a particular damage Casdone by the flood at any of the above named Points. More Seri Ous damage however resulted nearer Mac Leod. The Mclaren log drive consisting of some pieces of Timber was of the Way Down and was caught by the flood about 25 Miles up the River. The portion of the Boom at the Mill stretching from the upper end of the piles to the North Bank of the River gave Way and swung around behind the piles. The Force of the water drove the part of the Boom Between the lower end of the piles and the South Bank under water and the logs were carried clean Over it. To make matters still worse a second Boom about 100 Yards ther Down in the along which is now Al most As Large a River also gave Way. Fortunately All the escaping Timber was carried into the Slough. Gangs of men were placed at intervals along the Bank and they succeeded in saving a Large number of logs which were at once hauled out on the Bank. Partial famine in Russia and India and America have Good prospects. London july times summarizes be Harvest prospects of the world As follows in Russia there is a grave deficit the peasant iry Are starving and there is Small Hope of life Nandia there is serious anxiety a famine re i vails Over a considerable part of the country Madras Rajputana and the Punjab Are the worst sufferers there is drought in Bengal and the need of More rain is urgent Bombay alone promises a Good Harvest. The Ameri can Harvest will be Good i a Quality and amount but with the failure of India and in Psia sup plies it is of the utmost importance that the English crop shall not be Short the prospects on the whole Are Good. In the chief wheat counties of Essex Norfolk and Suffolk the crop is above the average and in other Conn ies up to the average. The Harvest will be ate and prices will be High therefore there is t Good Outlook for the English Farmer to the Long series of disastrous years. Drowned herself and her son. Philadelphia july body of mrs. Sarah Kramer aged 35 years was found in he Delaware River yesterday. Attached to Ler Waist by Means of a Stout rope was the Dody of her five month s old Eon Willie. The child which was drowned with the woman was deformed and this which weighed heavily upon her mind probably caused her to end the existence of both the child and herself. The Ontario crop. A traveller thou ghost Western Ontario writes to the Globe the crops in Middle sex Are fully an average and in Oxford very Rood except grass which is fair Waterloo lot so Good As Oxford and Middlesex but Lair Perth about the same As Waterloo while in Huron much of the crop suffered from continued dry weather particularly Klong the Lake where All the crops Are a failure. The Well of English it cannot be said too often that there is no basis for the belief that somewhere there exists a sublimated English language per feet and impeccable. This is the flawless Ideal to which All artists in style strive vainly to attain whether they Are English men or americans australians or canadians Irish or scotch. But nowhere is this speech without stain spoken by Man in his daily in London where cock key isms abound not in Oxford where University Slang is luxuriant and where pedantry nourishes. Nowhere has this pure and undefiled language Ever been spoken by any Community. Nowhere will it Ever be spoken other than by a few men Here and there gifted by nature or trained by Art. The speech of the people in the Mouth of the scholar that is the absolute Ideal which no Man can find by travel and which every Man must make for himself by toil avoid ing alike the tendency of the people toward slouching inaccuracy and the tendency of the scholar toward academic frigidity. Of the two the More wholesome leaning is toward the forcible idioms of Tho Plain people rather than the Tarner precision of the student. The wild Flowers of speech plucked Ber times with the Dew still on them Humble and Homeland touching such As we find in Franklin and a Emerson in Lowell and in Thoreau Are to be preferred infinitely before the Waxen petals of rhetoric As a schoolmaster arranges them.
