Somerville then showed witness an account he had certified for Mcmahon for doing extra work. Witness now recollected that work had been done by miss m. B. Armstrong who did not wish her to appear. The account was made ont in Mcmahon a name to shield miss Armstrong. It amounted to fifteen dollars. Witness under farther examination admitted that he and t. E. Rothwell an other permanent clerk had made ont an official Index of Dominion lands. Mcmahon in this instance had allowed them to use his name. Witness declared that the Money had been Well earned. The Job was Worth at least Mcmahon always sent witness All cheques. When Kin Tooh and the other cashed them he always shared with Rothwel. Murphy s hands for Choquette m. P., Drew the attention of witness to an item in the auditor general s re port for 18s9 representing a payment of s600 to Bourgeois Post office inspector at three Rivers. He had direct information that Bourgeois never received a cent. Postmaster general Haggart explained the affair. He said s600 had been voted Bourgeois by parliament in settlement of a claim. The inspector refused to accept the amount because it was too Small and the auditor general having been notified of the Issue of the Cheque charged it in Hia accounts. T. G. Rothwel being called declared the extra he received was for work done be fore he was appointed a permanent clerk. Or. John k. Hall acting Deputy of the Interior department said he had Given extra work to clerks who were in need of financial assistance. He did not recollect having asked Mccabe an extra share with Brough on on the plea that the latter needed Money in View of his approaching marriage several years ago. Witness never certified to accounts unless he waa aware thu work had been done. He made out checks in name of Joseph Wright for h. H. Turner and b. Turner an extra clerk. It also transpired that Jos. Tower Book keeper in the Crown Timber Branch Drew s15 per month since 1887 for doing work after hours. The cheques were made payable to his sister in Law miss Charbonneau. Since june last no payments had been made for extra work for Interior department works. In future parliament will be asked for special rates when required. Somerville pointed out to witness an account for work alleged to have been done by Mcmahon and really done by Kinloch. Witness replied that he did and also that Kinloch was not legally entitled to it but that it was the practice of the depart ment. The work waa All Well done and the Deputy minister recommended him for permanent appointment but the Treasury Board Over ruled it As Humphry had passed the Maxi mum age of 33 years. Subsequently a vacancy occurred in the land office at Winnipeg and Humphry waa awarded a position at per Day. Mcmahon assistant superintendent of the government printing Bureau admitted that he had Lent his name to several clerks. He never saw the accounts but endorsed the cheques without compensation. O. 0. Rogers permanent clerk admitted that he Hod done extra work at Home. His sister in Law Misa Gordon gave him assist Ance. Witness checked the time himself and the account waa certified by Cote. Mcgreevy he had personal knowledge that a judgment against his brother for was delivered at that time by Mclaren and Cameron and that some of these notes went to that debt. The notes were discounted to raise Money to meet this judgment. H. J. Chaloner had discounted them at the Union Bank. Witness gave his note for As Security to the firm As his share of this Twenty five thousand. They kept it for two years in their Safe and finally returned it to him As part of his profits of the two missing notes. One was for three or four months and the other for twelve months. He sub sequently asked Murphy to change the twelve months note for a Shorter Date which he did. He made this request Mercer taken to task. Geoffrion then tried to see what the inspectors had done for the bribes Given them and Learned that during the month of october 1867, the Progress estimates gave the contractors about for their dredging while the dredges could Only dredge about Yards which at 55 cents reached Only the bribed inspectors made out those Progress estimates. Other months were compared similarly and showed the same startling results. He pro tested strongly against this payment of Money to snap Clors and finally reduced his protest to writing and sent it to each member of the firm. He read a copy of one of the protests in which he charged that there waa an expenditure of that he had not been consulted about and which he refused to his share of. When the Esquimalt tenders were up the witness had a formal interview with sir Hector about the matter. Sir Hector told him that the tenders were not extended yet but that he had telegraphed Hon. For several Days Subterran Ean sounds have been heard evidently coming from the Kingston Coal company s mines. The residents knew what the noise meant and pre pared to vacate their houses but the crash came yesterday before they expected and the Earth Sank. The area affected covers fully 60 acres and the damage is great. The Earth a broken and cracked As if an earthquake had occurred. There Are great holes Large enough for a horse and Wagon to fall into. In other places there Are Large cracks that run in All directions for half a mile or More. The streets Are seamed and broken. All the Wells have inn dry and water and Gas Mains Are ruined. Many houses went Over when the crash came and even the foundations have collapsed several families Are rendered homeless and have sought shelter of More fortunate neighbors. As the land is useless for further building that portion of the town is ruined. Several Hundred thousand dollars will necessary to put the Interior of the mine in condition.
