Communications. Or himself. To the editor of the free press. Your paper of july 2nd there is a resume of the doings of the icelandic Synod that met at Winnipeg about the Middle june last. In treating of the secession of new Iceland from the Synod there Are a few mis takes which i beg permission to Correct. When speaking of my belief it is said that i rejected the inspiration of the scriptures and Rej used to accept anything which i could not understand or reason out. I never have rejected inspiration As a whole but i denied literal inspiration which i find is a different thing. I have always maintained that the deity and divine actions and divine things above Tho reason of Man but i also firmly believe that divine actions divine manifestations can never be contrary to reason or natural Law if rightly known. A Resolution is also passed in the Flynod to the effect that it was evident or. Skaptason had departed from the Creed of Tea Church and As far As could be Learned had joined the unitarians he having preached at the unitarian Mission. It was considered that he and the congregations which had followed him were no longer members of the that is a trance Mason if a preacher that preaches at a Church not his own should necessarily have embraced _ the Faith of the Church he happens to preach in and As to the Resolution that we were no longer members of the Synod it looks rather queer when four congregations out of seven had previously withdrawn their own free will and one of the remaining three had accepted my services knowing that i did not agree with the Synod regarding the eternal punishment and inspiration. At last the writer of the resume says that the people that adhere to me Are about 500 people or half of the population of new Lea the whole population of new Iceland has been estimated at about people and the half of it would be not Coo. But now it is of ious that when four out of seven congregations have seceded and one of the remaining three Haa adhered to me although they As yet have not formally declared their intention of stepping out of the Synod that this will make something More than half of the population of new Iceland especially a a i have Many adherents in the two remaining congregations and an a whole i count the adherents of this Rhy Liberal Beliet not by hundreds but thousands among the icelanders Here in America. What a sensible woman s organization is doing for shop girls. A Little Over a year ago amass meeting was held at Chickering Hall under the auspices of the working women s society for the purpose of establishing what is now known As Tho Consumers league an organization declaring its object to be to ameliorate the condition of the women Aud children employed in the retail mercantile houses of this City by patronizing so fax As practicable Only such houses As approach in their conditions to the Standard of a fair House As adopted by the league and by other the principal officers of the league Are mrs. Charles Russell Lowell president mrs. Charles s. Spofford treasurer miss. Caldwell recording Secretary and mrs. Robert me Kim corresponding Secre tary and these women have succeeded during their twelve Mouths of office in Ren Dering very efficient Aid to women employed in shops. For a time it was up Hill work first to induce employers to believe that they were treating their employees badly and then to elicit from them a Promise to change their methods but business men Are not unjust and hard hearted and one by one they Are gradually showing their willingness to see the matter in the right Light. Besides a Large number of women in new York who do much shopping have put their shoulders to the wheel in order to Force out of existence this form of oppression to shop employees and this action has even More weight with the showmen strange As it May seem than has the moral Side of the Awakening to the sense of injustice. The names of a few of Tho firms were to be had at once and these were issued by the Consumers league in the shape of a White list for the Benefit of the shoppers interested in the Reform. This list is boing added to each month and it is hoped in the end the retail establishments will sign the paper. The Standard of a fair House is one in which equal pay is Given for work of equal value irrespective of Box in the depart ments where women Only Are employed in which the minimum wages Are six dollars per week for experienced adult workers but fall in few instances Low eight dollars in which wages Aro paid by the week in which fines if imposed Are paid into a fund for the Benefit of the employees in which the mini Mem wages of Cash girls Are two dollars Par week with the same conditions regarding weekly payments and fines in which the hours from 8 a. M. To 6 p. M. With three quarters of an hour for lunch constitute a working Day and a general half Holiday is Given on one Day of each week during at least two summer months in which a vacation of not less than one week is Given with pay during the summer season in which All overtime is compensated for in which work Hinch and retiring rooms Are apart from one another and con form in respects to the present sanitary Laws in which the present Law regarding the providing of seats for Saleswoman is observed and the use of seats permitted in which humane and considerate be Havior toward employees is the Rule in. Which Fidelity and length of service meet with consideration which is their due in which no children under fourteen years of age Are no one who reads these rules will find anything unreasonable in them. Of the contrary even the woman who has borne resentment in her heart toward this or that clerk because of having been treated by her with indifference or disrespect will not wish her to be cared for in a less Huratio manner than this paper demands. In the Constitution adopted by the con Sumers league the condition of member ship is the approval by signature of the object of the league All Eligi ble excepting Sulci As Aro engaged Wuthe retail business in new York self ills pen. The Way to keep a Man out of the Laud is to Black his says Frederick Doug lass. This Happy remark often occurs to us when we see boys going to school with shoes that have never once known Tho Brush with hair Unco bed faces not too clean ears unlit for inspection hands very Black and a Cap that has evidently Guowu hard service As a missile weapon. Such a boy is More Likely at least both to talk Aud to act unbecoming by than who a clean and tidy. Something within the tidy boy compels him to Hoo up to his the other boy is Apt to live Tiwu to his dirty boots. Fixing upon a boy an odious Aud belittling nickname which Lowers his self esteem has the same tendency. So does ridiculing him for any natural defect and for the clumsiness which i often re stilts from such a defect. The mistakes of youth frequently result from shyness and this if greatly aggravated by the jeers of compan ions and still More by the impatience of a teacher. Many a person now honoured and esteemed Iii the world dates his Progress up Ward from the moment when he received from some honoured lips a word in coir age meet or discovered by Chance that he was not inferior to his comrades despite appearances to the contrary. We can hardly do a More injurious act than to another think More meanly of himself than he ought to think. Humility is an excellent trait but humility in a very different thins from the Mortica Tiou and self abasement that sometimes re suit from sneers or com Panion. Jewels of roman women. The ladies of Rome imbibed a Lovo for Art and artistic decoration of their per sons. While in Early times their dress was severely simple they kept Pace with the tastes of the men and Many ladies of rank vied with the cardinals in their patronage of the Goldsmiths. Cellini numbered Sev eral among Kis friends and at various times keenly Felt the consequences of their displeasure or Caprice. Of course the patronage of women was not directly connected with the affairs of the Church for in its councils a Oinen were unknown. The Popes and priests never married else Art might have widely applied than it was. Women ten however called the Gold Smith s talents into their service for the creation of splendid gifts in the name of their religion. A few of them furnished Means for the creation of altar furniture of the most elaborate and expensive Char Acter which they preset Ted to the sanctuaries in which they worshipped. But there was another class of roman women. There were beauties in Rome As Well As in other countries and they were not less fond of personal adornment and adulation. Like their of today they were not averse to the admiration of Bhe opposite sex and they enhanced their natural charms by All the arts then known. At the time of which Shakespeare has made so much of his plays jewels were worn in greater or less profusion by the beauties of weekly.
