Ross minister of education in Ontario who a spending a Day or two in Winnipeg on his first visit to Manitoba and the Northwest territories waa yesterday asked by a free press representative a few questions the object of his visit and several other matters of Public interest. In answer he said that he had been anxious for several years to Nee the Western pro vines of the Dominion having already visited All the leading cities of the East. He had last year even secured his tickets for this trip but had been detained by official Busi Ness. Manitoba and the Northwest territories were of special interest to him because he bad been a member the Honse of commons when the measures for the if develop ment were first considered by Tho parliament of Canada. The Early history of Manitoba was also interesting because of the difficulties overcome by the first settlers in establishing themselves and in calling attention to the Richness of a country practically unknown in the province of Ontario. He had always thought that there was a Good Deal of Romance connected with lord Selkirk s settlement at Kildonan with the isolation of the scotch immigrant and the heroism with which he endured that isolation until civilization reached him fifty or sixty years afterwards. He had also been interested in. Seeing for him self the quarters occupied by the Hudson Bay company at fort the discussion of which had so filled the Public press at the time when he was a journalist in partnership with the present editor of the free press. He would like to Steps taken by the historical society or otherwise to preserve far visitors from the East More fully than appeared to done the landmarks of old fort Garry and traces of the Early settlement at that Point As nothing was known of the Hudson Bay Block House and the old Hudson Bay stores except from the records of the company. Or. Ross was very much impressed with the appearance of Winnipeg and with the fact that so extensive and substantial a City would pos Sibly have grown up in so Short a period As 20 years. He had found the City very interest ing with very substantial Public buildings worthy of a City to years old. He had met with a Good Many of his former acquaintances in Ontario some of whom had been his constituents in his first and second Campaign in his Riding and he had had re heated assurances from them that the prospects of the province were daily growing brighter. The subject of the Dairy commissioner s and rest was the agriculture of Canada and the opinion experimental farm he id the value of agricultural experiments was to fold. They had the object of discovery y investigation and of instructing Farmer by lust ration. There was no Desira upon the Art of those who were trying to promote fixed farming and Dairying in the West to Trust upon Manitoban a style of farming for which they had no use or desire but the in Orfi and profits from wheat growing can be supplemented by the receipts from other pro nets and the income is More steady Ain when drawn from several sources. Immigrants seemed to absorb every other consideration. With the1 facilities which the . Possesses for doing a Large Trade and with its connections North and South at differ ent few Mil one of people would not overdo tha present capacities for transportation. He looked upon the development of Manitoba and the North West territories As the question of the future of Canada. Any government that could secure the right class of not Sim ply from the older provinces out from beyond the Atlantic would Confer a great Boon upon the he had watched with great in Terest the growth of the school system of Manitoba particularly because Many of his old acquaintance when he was actively Ong Gad either is a teacher or an inspector had held important position in connection with the organizations of the system Ami 110 doubt their experience in Ontario had been of great service to them in this Prairie province. The educational oonv3zhtion. Speaking of the great teachers convention which took place in Toronto the other Day or. Roes said that this gathering of the National educational association had been a great soc use. The Best educators of the United states had f Faro red the association with their presence in fact there had seemed to be a plethora of presidents of universities and in almost every department from English to the Moat advanced philosophy. It had been exceedingly pleasant to make the Acosia instance of such men As of Clarke University or. Butler of Colombia Hon. W. T. Harris commissioner of Educa Tion Washington and superintendents of states and principals of Normal schools in abundance. Canada had also been Well re presented. The americana appeared to be wonderfully impressed with the hospitality of Toronto and the teaching profession generally. As to the results of the convention one result was already apparent namely the formation of an association for the do minion of Canada. For this or. Rosa said he had been anxious for some time and it had been exceedingly pleasant in response to his invitation to find the theatre of the Normal school filled with Between boo and 600 teachers inspectors and superintendents from All parts of tha Dominion full of enthusiasm to assist in the formation of such an association. The Premier of British co Lumbia took part in the deliberations is representing the educational department of that province. Or. Ross was confident that the formation of such an association would not Only be of advantage educationally which was the primary object of importance of course but it would tend to bind the provinces together Mora strongly and help in the development of a Canadian sentiment which he might remark by the Way was something very much to be desired. To the question. Would one system of Edu cation for the Dominion be an advantage think not i think variety of form is essential in a country coveting such a vast area As Canada. We must have some respect also for the traditions of the different provinces and for the status quo of institutions under which they May have educationally prospered bub which would be entirety unsuited a to a condition of things such As might prevail in the news provinces. Or. Rosa expects to leave for the on wednesday. He May Tarry by the Way at a few Points such As Brandon Calgary and Banff and then after having seen British Columbia find the old Colony of Van Couver he Hopes to return eastward so As to reach Toronto Early in september.
