It was while spending a month in Frijia Little town of Cri ices n. M., that i Madu the acquaintance of a Catholic priest father Minier who was dying of consumption and no longer in service but lingering in that warm climate hoping to so prolong his life. He had no relatives in this country. Jle was a Man at Intelli gence and wide information and i found his most pleasant. Visiting him one Day i was startled to a Little Green head peeping at me from under the priest s Pillow. Following my gaze the father held out Liis hand to the Lizard which snuggled in it like a Kitten. My Only to said and the Learned and accomplished Monsieur or. Green. Now you must show the gentleman what you can do or. Green he Here produced n Little ladder mails of Straw which the Lizard mounted. A word of command and then descended the ladder on its Back to the Box in which it was kept then being Bidden it brought out a miniature wine Glass. Monsieur Vert has bad said the father. He is a at which the Little creature pretended to Drain the Glass and when its master continued he can t walk began to Wabble from Side to Side in a Way that made me laugh most heartily. There is but one end for drunkards produced a sudden flounce Over on its Back a stiffening of the queer Little feet and the poor Toper was presumably dead. Only one twinkling Eye kept watch on us to what effect the scene would have. Father Minter pretended to weep when Monsieur Vert jumped up and running to him crept into his hand. Now you must Tell us the Dearest country in the the priest. One rap of the Tail shall mean no and More one then the Tail gave a vigorous tap. Jjo then perhaps another single rap. Well say no then perhaps at this Tho Lizard rolled Over and repeated the lying dead performance but when its master called How about it turned again and beat a regu Lar Tattoo with its Tail. So that s it Monsieur Vert. Bat what have you to say of the United the Lizard expressed its enthusiasm by turning a slow and most impressive somersault. That ended the performance which had i not witnessed i would not have credited but father Minter assured me that it had not been the trouble to train the Little creature that if was to teach tricks to a dog. The Lizard made its Home somewhere outside the priest s window but spent much of its time running or sleeping on its ledge and would often be for hours watch ing its Friend. When he grew too weak to play with it it would creep into his hand and never stir until he would command it to go Home when it would Start perhaps a dozen times Only to return and try and steal Back to him. The Day the priest died it could not be induced to leave him for a and when breathed his last i had to re move the poor thing from his cold fingers. I meant to adopt the Lizard for my pwn but it fell a victim on the Day of its Mas Ter s funeral to the foolish prejudice i spoke of. Rome was the Mother of Art in Europe. Early in her history the Popes cardinals and other dignitaries of the Christian Church fostered the sculptor the Painter and the Goldsmith and Many of her Citi Zens became famous through their Patron age. They represented the wealth and the dignity of the City and although narrow jealous and arrogant in Many instances they rendered a service to the world which has been widespread in its Good effects. The splendor of the Art which they encouraged for the purpose of advancing the cause of their religion survives in Many works of Art to this Clay. Their efforts in this direction were not confined however to the decoration and enrichment of their sanctuaries and palaces but extended to the ornamentation of their persons. The Goldsmiths of the time were among Bhe first to create jewels possessing truly artistic features. Cellini was among those who owed their Fame to the patronage of dignitaries of Tho Church. Not Only did he attain celebrity through the favor of a popu and numerous cardinals but he also in consequence of their Petty jealousies and offended for which however it is but just to state that his Hasty temper was in no Small degree weekly. Course i know that the cultivation of they Are Many and they always lean toward the North. How the poles Aro made and placed in flagpole costs All the Way from 810 to Are even v a uglier in poles. A leading manufacturer of flagpoles who has been in the business since 1850, says that the demand for poles has increased wonderfully within the last ten years. Every builder who estimates on the Erec Tion of a House is obliged to include a Flag pole in his plans. The Are made 6t Wood usually Spruce or Pine. For a length of seventy feet or less Spruce is preferred. Beyond that height Pine is chosen if the pole is a single stick. The Wood comes from Norway Nova Scotia and Northern York. It lies under water for a year and is then ready to be Hen into a piece. After that it is Cut Down smaller with a draw shave smoothed with a Flat plane and finished with a hollow plane. If the pole is not exactly straight it has to be made so by planing it on one Side. It is then put in a Yard to that is it gets a Chance to crack on the sides. These tracks or checks Are filled with Putty or if they Are top Large they Are filled with oakum and called like the timbers of a hip. The pole is then painted and fitted with wooden Ball on top. Flagpole makers say that poles ought to be painted once a year it makes them last longer. When a Pola is put up in two pieces it is joined to Gether by a dovetail splice. This splice is strengthened by heavy Iron bands around Tihe splicing. From fifty to eighty feet makes n Good length for a pole. If it u eighty feet Long it ought to have a diameter of twelve to fourteen inches at its base and other lengths Are made in nearly this proportion. Flagpoles Are taken Down because they rot at the base but a great number of them get struck by lightning every year. After that they Are Good nothing but firewood. How poles Warp and leak. A flagpole costs the buyer from sj.6 to it costs the maker from s3 to but he has to reject Many Sticks when he comes to work them into shape and he has to put Thorn in position. This task is often difficult and dangerous. Poles have to be put on the tops of domes Ami a Cir Cular stairway has to be built around the sides of these domes to enable workmen to reach the required Point. Then poles Are placed on Flat roofs and peaked roofs on steeples on Stone Walls on even on Trees. Every flagpole begins to Warp As soon As it is put up. The heat and the atmosphere seem to affect it. A curious fact is that if a pole is set strip Chat it always warps to Ward the North that is the top of the pole will be found to incline slightly North Ward. One authority says that this Hap pens because the Sun rises in the Northeast and acts of the pole when it is Damp with the night Dew. He does not know How this theory would apply to poles in cities that Are in a different latitude than York. Another authority says that the wind has a great Deal to do in warping the poles and still another expert says that a pole will Bend in the same direction that it inclined when it was a tree in its native Forest. None of these reasons alter the indisputable fact that the flagpoles of York Are nearly All Bent with their Heads toward the North. There Are a few Iron poles in this City. The most popular one is probably i a junk shop by this time. It used to stand on the Western Union building in lower Broad Way. It was on this pole that the famous time Ball glided up and Down. Ball and pole were broken and taken Down at the time of the fire in the Western Union build ing. There Are some High poles in York and there Are others that Are set in High places. The custom House has three of these measure so feet each and the third one is 59 feet in length. The Middle pole of the custom House was put up in 1867. The flagpole on the Dakota Flats is 288 feet above the ground. Of this height 165 feet belong to the building the rest is pole.
