Be next year they will be Universal careful inspection of the Portage Plains shows no damage from Frost. Special correspondence of the free pree6. Job tags la a Barbie sept. Others interviewed to Day with regard to the effect smudges had on the Frost was a very successful practical Farmer or Thomas us Sions president of the Farmers Institute Here. He is of opinion that smudge burning if carried out properly would have the effect of entirely warding off such slight frosts As fell this season. Evident Benefit was derived this season though two thirds of the Farmers did not Burn smudges. It is known said or. Sissions that if a Cloudy morning succeeds a Frost Little damage is done. If the air were filled with smoke it would have the same effect. He burned smudges extensively him. Self and considers his wheat injured very Little if any. One cannot expect unqualified Success in an Experiment Given a partial trial for the first time. At the first meeting of the Farmers Institute Here much interesting in formation regarding smudges will be Given As data a being collected from available sources by tha officers. . Sissions Cut some wheat when it was matured but somewhat Green. Being basked How it compared with Well ripened he t Aid that it was no. 1 hard a perfect Golden color though the Grain May not be so Large he will finish cutting All his Grain to Day. Fourteen Miles to the Northwest of this place at Macdonald Post office or. H. Spray has a farm with acres under cultivation., acres of which is wheat. This was one of the most magnificent crops on the Plains and was saved with Only a slight injury. His wheat will be All Cut to Day. From three to three and one half pounds of twine per acre is required 1.0 bind much of the Grain this year. The late firm of Mclean Mcrobie or. Mclean who was recently killed by an Acci Dent with his traction engine has a farm ten Miles to the on which acres Are under cultivation acres of which rein wheat. Their wheat crop will be Cut on tues Day or wednesday. The oat crop is in the language of or. Mcrobie the Best we Ever had in the and is not yet Cut. It is uninjured by Frost. No damage done by Frost. Portage la Prairie sept. The Grain of this District i can give you my personal experience of yesterday after cover ing some forty Miles of the pins to the North and West of this town in the company of one of Manitoba s first Grain expert. We went into the Fields irrespective of the Lay of the land would be to go into any Low land or any ravines we happened to come across and the result was As follows which if a teat undoubtedly that should Tell. We plucked from Grain standing and in Stooks some distance from the Roadway fifty one samples from fifty one Fields and put of this lot is found eight samples whish showed signs of Frost and five of these Sam pies were taken from Grain that was lodged. This would show that practically the Grain is Safe from Frost so far. Some samples were perfectly dry an will Grade number one hard. The Grain is no More than three quarters Cut and will take Al next week to finish. We spoke to a dozen Farmers in regard to smudging Aud Ever Man believed in the smudge if a web general it might also be noted that the frosted samples were not spoiled Only slightly damaged. The Grain crop Here will be very heavy although the Farmers question the qual Ity being equal to the year 1887. Altogether one speaking to the far mers drives through the Plains canno but be struck with the Broad smile that lights up the countenance of the Hardy Husbandman As he surveys his immense Fields with a know ledge of it being untouched by the Frost we predict that nine tenths of the Farmers Here will smudge next season so sanguine Are they of the Benefit reaped this year. The machine shops Are Busy pushing through engines that were sent Here for repairs a some Small Lota of wheat will be threshed Thi coming week. Quappelle station. In appeals station sept. Harves operations Are proceeding with great vigor throughout this District. The Progress has contradicted the report of 2 degrees of Frost in this neighbourhood. It has no doubt never registered lower than in the streets of the town where the warmth of the houses Natur ally raises the temperature but on two farms several Miles apart within the township the thermometer placed on the grass of a Field away from the Protection of a House or wooden shelter marked 2 degrees of Frost and in one instance smudges raised tha temperature o the Corn Fields to the same Hight As the thermometer would probably have marked against wooden buildings in the Vicinity of Kitchen stoves. During the last week it has. How Ever never been lower than Oti Ebuen. Teebken Man., sept. Cutting in this locality is in full blast with favourable weather bulk of it will be Down this week or the beginning of next.
