This result shows j g How rapid How Strong and How solid has been the growth of the Liberal party in Western Canada. Its strength is constantly increasing. Liberal Prin Freedom in truce. Liberty in religion Equality in civil right. Tuesday september it idol Ibe i Iii kit a is of Western Canada. The political history of Western Canada though it did not have its beginning until Long after the most important chapters of the political history of older Canada had been written already fills a goodly murther of pages in the Ever growing National Book of record which is held in the memory of the Canadian people. New As this Western country still is it is already beginning to have a past to look Back Over and reap the lessons j of experience from. That past May i eem but a Brief Span of years when regarded from the Point of View of one it the Greybeard provinces of older Canada but to us in the West it bulks with a respectable largeness in the Metros pc to. It is our own. And though he West has its face turned to the future it keeps in mind whatever there is of profit to be drawn from its past. In looking backward Over the political history of Western Canada and comparing it in a general Way with the political history of older Canada one cannot fail to not a How history has repeated itself. In the annals of older Canada the line is clearly marked Between the principles of the two historic political parties and Between the Cou res pursued by each. In Canada. Is in great Britain the Liberal party fought the Long hard fight that had to be steadfastly maintained to secure the responsible government and the free institutions we enjoy to Day. The conservative party behind its entrenchments of arrogance bigotry and tyranny raised by the family compact stoutly resisted the Advance of responsible government persistently claiming for themselves some sort of divine right to mis govern the country and when they had to give in at last to responsible government a that is to say the government of Canada by us own people and not by any ruling a lass or clique a they gave in Moat a graciously. Of course the similarity Between the political history of older Canada and that of Western Canada could Only be one of general outline. A nature brings not Back the Mastodon a a nor the family compact. But the Good old tory idea that the tory party have a sort of divine right to mis govern the country persisted Many Long years after the family Compaq i was As dead As Julius Caesar. During the first fifteen or Twenty years of the political history of Western Canada the doctrine was taught that the conservative party had not Only created Manitoba and the Northwest territories but also maintained them. The Dogma was Laid Down that it would to a crime both heinous and incomprehensible for any Ceder to want to vote against the conservative party. So powerful were the influences the it were brought to Bear to rub this in that As a result Western Canada was made a preserve and stamping ground for the conservative party. The Liberal party were simply not in it and had reason to be thankful that in the Fine a bracing air of the West they could not be prevented from breathing and allowing their blood to continue to circulate. In ail those years there was Only one a eat on the Liberal Side of the Dominion parliament held by a representative of a constituency West of Lake Superior and when or. Watson retired from the Dominion House to enter the Manitoba government there were iwo sessions during which there was not a solitary Liberal member of parliament from Manitoba a the territories a British Columbia. Those were the Days when if Ever a political party a Light be said to be in sore Straits to a weak and to be helplessly struggling against an overwhelmingly powerful adversary it was the Liberal party in Western Canada. Strongly conservative was this province that when the conservative government fastened upon Manitoba the Fetters of a giant railway monopoly Manitoba even then continued to Send to Ottawa a majority of members to support that outrage in parliament.
