Problem of securing Homes or indeed accommodation of any sort in the past year for the numerous settlers and land Hunt ers who have thronged this prosperous Western land has been a diff cult one to solve. Brandon have never suffered particularly from Lack of buildings although of recent years it has been noticeable that accommodation has been slowly getting scarcer and harder to procure. As our Mer chants and business men gradually arose from hard and Earnest toilers to More affluent circumstances shacks and shanties gave place to Frame and Brick houses and blocks thus vindicating the substantial Ity of Brandon s business men. This very natural de sire to own or reside in a building somewhat equal to the larger demands of More prosperous living has this year culminated in the expenditure in Brandon of Over a. Quarter of a Mills a of the erection of buildings which has had the effect of changing the appearance of the place from that of a provincial town _ to that of one More metropolitan. However though the Road gave us the go by the natural development of the District demanded that buildings be erected or improved and in the course of the Vear about has been expended in this Way in town. Attempt to write up the Prosperity of the a cola District along the substantial line of building for the Yeav 1902 is a big undertaking. The products of the crop of Lijole have been spent mostly in More land under cultivation. The i Vren of the land under cultivation is now double what it was a year ago. However the District is certainly read in no something substantial from the of rail it of its soil in the Way of in buildings Large granaries Anc. Mammoth barns. When estimating the value of the done on the farms in the past season we do not take into consideration the varied Homes of hundreds homesteaders who have come into the District the past season though the total would certainly be Many thousands of dollars. In the Centre the Moose Mountain Valley situated at the terminus of the Arcola Branch of the Canadian Paci fic railway stands the thriving town of Arcola. It is Little wonder that All visitors and Home seekers Are m pressed with the Beauty and Fertility i of this part of the country. To the North about five Miles Rise the Moose i mountains fro which can be Survey j de the Long level Valley that makes the District famous. From this Valley in the season of 1001 bushels of wheat were marketed and this sea son already Over bushels have been marketed and More than that amount is still held Back in the Gran Aries of the Farmers owing to the blockade. With the Revenue from this and also from the Bis flax crop the town of Arcola though Only two years old has had More substantial Progress than almost any other town in the Canadian West. Last year two Eleva tors were in operation. Now we have five Large Standard elevators together with a flax store House with a combined capacity of bushels. About have been expended in the erection of business blocks and dwellings this season and the town now has a. Group of Over sixty places of business and about seven Hundred inhabitants. A Stock company is now being formed with a capital of Dauphin. Dauphin dec. In Dauphin the past season has been satisfactory on the whole although the wet period of the Early Spring greatly delayed work. In town the buildings erected have been largely confined to business blocks. These include the Leach and Mackenzie blocks. The Bank of Commerce building and tha Mackenzie Mann residence Tow site farm. The railway company has built a Large Coal Dock fitted up with Modem improvements. The flour Mill has undergone extensive improvements and put in an electric lighting Plant. The town itself has made considerable additions to the sidewalks and improved the Bridges leading to the corporation. The municipalities closely adjoining the town have advanced along the line of building and general improvement very noticeably. These include the Rural municipalities Dauphin ochre River Ste. Rose Gilbert Plains and grand View. The buildings erect of. Ilav almost Dences and in most cases these Are of a commodious kind. A great Many new school houses have been built Duit the year in the Rural districts. 1 these new buildings Are a great i movement on the old ones. One of the most important advances made during the year has been in the direction of Bridge building. The new Bridges Are of the truss variety and structures which have been built to stand the Strain of heavy traffic Ami avoid the havoc caused by the Spring floods with the old style or pile Bridge. During the summer the railway com Pany has also built Many new Bridges along its system in this District. Just what the expenditure has been this year in building and improve ments is a Little hard to get at from the data obtainable but a conserva Tive estimate places Tho figures at a very satisfactory state of affairs when it is taken into consideration the delay caused by the backward Spring. Lumber dealers and contractors Esti mate that the season s expenditure will exceed if anything this is a conservative estimate. In Carberry the principal structures Are the handsome new St. Agnes English Church and rectory built at a Cost of the other congregations Are following suit.
