The in quest to Day a. Railroad Story As dra Matic and As tragic As any in the Hist Ory railroads was told by the train dispatcher j. E. Kerr and the station agent Andrew Carson who gave Dif Ferent versions the causes which led to the Wanstead horror. Their statements Are different in no degree from those already reported but they were to Day made on oath and the two employees both added details to support the evidence which on the vital Point direct responsibility for the wreck contradicted each other. The testimony Tho two men agreed up to the statement by Carson that Kerr had told Hon to bust or cancel Tho order giving instructions for express train no. 5 and the East bound freight to pass at Wanstead. Kerr denied sending this message and his denial is supported by All documentary evidence which will remain As a record the tragedy. Carson has Only in Black and White the words bust written Man order by himself to support his word. The Curi Ous Chain mishaps which led to the disaster a tvs perhaps Tho most impressive feature brought out by the Day s proceedings. Carson in the first place either mis understood or failed to deliver the order or else the order was improperly Given. Either these Circum stances might have occurred and the wreck been impossible the operator at King court had been at his key instead As he probably was out on the platform. There was a Clear foul Miles Between the to o a lations in which to Stop the express. the great Mogul , with its watchful Engineer had passed King court danger signal and the Wanstead opera Tor had been working in his office As he often does at night he would have had five minutes to raise his Sema Phore and the express could not have Sot by that. Wyoming agent s c Nance. With 5 past these two stations Tho agent at Wyoming had a Chance to hold the freight. He was imperatively ordered to do this by the Des Patcher and gave the signal to the rear brakeman on the Van the Long line cars. The brakeman saw the lantern wave and transmitted the Slop signal to the head the train. He supposed that the conductor had been left behind. But from the Onirine came an answer by lantern that everything was All right sent by both conductor and the front brakeman so he did not repeat the signal. The Wyoming agent Content with having his Stop signal acknowledged walked to the station not knowing that he had failed to carry out instructions to Stop the freight. Con i Ductor Graham knew that he had to pass the freight at Wanstead and but for the final mishap to his plans the express would have swept by in safety. Graham knew better than to keep the fast passenger train waiting and in his own words he did t want and truck with those big Mogul engines so when the freight was nearing the switch at Wanstead he ordered the Driver to Slacken Speed and the brakeman jumped off and ran ahead to turn the switch. This was to save the time that would be lost by bringing the heavy train beef cars to a dead standstill and then Start again. The ground at the switch was Slippery with soft Snow and the bral Ceman s feet went from under him. He failed to throw the switch and the freight engine and cars rolled filing the main track past him. Then the train had to be stopped and backed up to the switch. This took a. Minute and a half Only a Little time but longer than would have been required to pull the train securely in to the siding. With that Little time expired the Crew were jumping for their lives before the awful Rush no. 5 express. The hearing the evidence is be ing proceeded with in a Little Hall near Wyoming station itself once the shelter Many sufferers from the railway wreck. Or. Albert e. Hall the town is the presiding Coroner and he has drawn his fury from among the citizens his own Village and included among them three clergy men. George c. Jones divisional superintendent the railway was in the Village during the Day but the representatives the company in the court room were w. C. Costello Lon Don assistant superintendent and w. Pope , who acted As Legal adviser. Or. Carson the agent now charged by his Superior with the responsibility for the wreck had with him w. J. Hanna m.p.p., Sarnia. Tha examinations Are being conducted by Crown attorney Bucke. Sarnia. Dispatcher Kerr. Carson was called first but his Law yer objected. He said he wanted to hear the first evidence with the incidents leading up to Carson s part. This being practically an inti mation that the dispatcher s version should be Given first j. B. Kerr Thor the order for the crossing the trains at Wanstead was called to the stand. Kerr denied positively that he Ever cancelled the order o fice Given without substituting another specific order. He told the Story the orders Given and the efforts to Stop both trains at intervening stations which efforts were too late in every Case by a few seconds. Carson complained that the books were taken from his office but the railway solicitor produced the books in court. Carson said he had frequently received orders to bust previous order but could not give Lvi Date for any. M. G. Watson the Wyoming agent brakeman Harkness and conductor Graham the freight were the other witnesses and the inquest continues to Morrow. Most the wounded have left Lon for their monies and most the dead have been sent to friends for interment.
