Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - January 1, 1903, Winnipeg, Manitoba Manitoba morning free press Winnipeg thursday january i published every by the Manitoba free prs us company manager. Editorial department.582 business office Job department co., 15 Toronto at. I Pronto office the w. J. Dyad new Toroc office is Clergue. 715 Temple Conn. Chicago office Henry Decle Rurue. .701-2. Ssh her Bias. M thursday january 1, 1903. Canadian manufacturers and the Export Trade. The free press recently published a letter from a formerly of this City who is now a business in Krugersdorp. This gentleman being desirous of handling Canadian Furni Ture boots and shoes and other lines of goods wrote to several Canadian manufacturing concerns expecting to find them eager to take advantage of a new Market especially in View of the fact that a new direct steamship ser vice through the action of the do minion government had been established Between Canada and South Africa copies of the replies he received were enclosed Voth his letter and were printed in the free press the Namee of course being omitted. One of these replies it May be remembered was As we Are in receipt of your favor of the Lith ult., and a pleased to note that you Are organizing a company which it seems to us will be of great Benefit to the furniture Trade of our Dominion. As Yuri perhaps Are aware business is extra in our country and All the factories Are crowded with to bestir. Trades and Are Likely to by for the next six or sight months. We do not think we will be Able to Manu facture anything for Export until the latter part of next this letter As is noted by the Mon Treal which reprints it from the free press aptly illustrates the re of the idea promulgated by protectionists and taken As a working theory by manufacturers who Hellove in a High Tariff and Canada for the announced by or. Borden and his followers in parliament. Titis idea is that the Home Market is theirs by right. Holding this idea the manufacturer does not look abroad his vision to Home conditions and adjusts his operations by his knowledge of the horns Market s de mands. With business extra Good in our country and All the factories crowded with Dames la Trade he is Happy and gives Little heed to conditions elsewhere. A promising Buji Ness opening abroad is brought to he. , As in the Case of the gentle Man who wrote Froia Krugersdorp and fee sends word that we do not think we will by Able to manufacture any thing for Export until the latter part happen it help happening. But always forget the last lesson and always complain bitterly when the next one is taught. The British lesson of sixty years standing that business stability re suits from Freedom of Trade we disregard altogether As being be Neath the of people so enlightened As in the same Strain the monetary times of Toronto in an Able vigorously written article seeks to arouse the Canadian manufacturers to a realization of the necessity of developing foreign Trade. It says it is curious that More of our manufacturers do not realize to their full extent the benefits attached to the Export Trade. It has been calculated that it can be carried on at a Cost not exceeding one thirtieth of that Neces sary for the Domestic Market. The exporter Uncer facilities at present in existence need have no travelling salesmen moreover he gets for his goods spot Cash and experiences no risk of bad accounts. The Domestic Market is All very Well it should be developed to its full capacity but new blood or Money is necessary to keep it in a shite of perfect health. Ous time when he seeks to obtain that consent. The conservatives of Jurrard have shown an unusual amount of discretion in keeping out of the pending Bye election in that constituency. If they had the misfortune to be led by a Napoleonic Genius of the f. D. Monk Type they would have decided to charge full tilt head Down against a Stone Wall. As it is the Liberal candidate will be chosen by acclamation unless sex governor Mcl new re Mains in the Field. His candidature is not taken seriously by the pub Lic and if he goes to the polls he will be beaten out of sight. Now thai Jar. Roblin is Home again after mingling with his fellow provincial premiers and has had a quiet interval for considering in the priv Acy of his inner consciousness the serious thoughts suggested by the imagine three or tour men in one room of old Vear alld the birth with say one Hundred dollars Between of them which they ire constantly interchanging Between themselves. Each gets some profit but. The original Hun dred dollars remain very Little altered at the end of a month or a year. Then imagine t in entry of another Man with another Hundred dollars the whole or bit of that room s Commerce is enlarged. Thus it is when the results of foreign Commerce make their Entrance Felt among a country s business Community. Yet the average Canadian manufacturer is nonchalant he does not choose to make any exertion to reap these benefits. He is careless about getting orders he is careless As to the Way he ships his goods and As to promptitude their delivery he is still More careless in following the general instructions of his consignee. The reports of the Canadian Commer Cial agents abroad find it too often necessary refer to this subject. But More than this it was proved to us in a recent conversation with the Mana Ger sex a is Export concern that he average Canadian manufacturer is often too discourteous or too Lazy even to answer letters addressed to him asking for. or for quotations. As this fee Suemar. Remarked a Chim Ney sweep or a Nigger May sit Down the new he really ought to be Able to see the advisability of turn ins Over a new Leaf. By Way of be ginning he should make amends for the Gross affront to principal Pat Rick or. J. A. M. Aikins k.c., and the other members of the agricultural College commission appointed under order in Council of which he was guilty in his speech at Don. York life. Business of 1902 three Hundred and two Mil Lions of new a great showing. The West enters to Day upon what will be. We have no doubt the most satisfactory year it has yet had. This forecast is not made simply in the spirit of hopefulness in this Case coming events cast their shadows be fore. During it is no exaggeration to say that the population of Mani Toba and the territories increased by at least one Hundred thousand people this year the influx will be fifty per cent greater. The end of the present year will see pretty nearly three quarters of a million people in the Canadian West. This growth in the new York life insurance com Pany of which or. John a. Mccall is the president and or. J. G. Mor Gan the Well known Winnipeg Ger the manager for Western Canada a truly wonderful showing in the report on the business of the past year presented in another part of this morning s free press. The enor Mous amount of three Hundred and two millions of dollars in new insurance was taken out and paid for in 1w2. Being covered by policies out in favor of ail classes of people in ail parts of the great world. The total insurance in Force is . Held by Over policy holders who. As the report says Are the company who own the company who alone receive the profits of the during the year the new York life insured individuals in the sum of Over on which the i first premiums have been paid in ii an Cash this is More insurance than the company placed in the previous year. During the com Pany paid in death losses on the lives of Over policy holders More than and has paid to Liv ing holders in maturing policies and other Cash benefits Over the company loaned during the year direct to of its policy holders on the sole Security of their policies up wards of at 8 per cent without fee or charge. During the on a Doorstep anti address a Post card a the Best possible Index request to a United states firm for one of the r catalogues and the arc that he will receive it. It May not Lead to anything on tha other Hanifl it May at any rate the fernands of business civility Are Satis now when they Are coining Money in the Home Market is the time 1 or the manufacturers to obtain a foothold in markets abroad. Intelligence and Energy applied in this direction now will yield far a2 Ter and More lasting re Suhs thar. Agitation now or at any future time to secure Tariff increases. Or Chamberlain and or Bor Den s policy. Ura political speakers and of next so it goes while a finds himself there political writers who in the Way droning Are j lilies in the Telegram dealing with the colonial conference in Lon Don last summer form quite a strik ing Case in Point. In the latest of these Lucu rations of the local Organ of the party of High Protection the follow to the material development of the country that is going is the opportunities for doing business profit ably that Are drawing people from All parts of Europe and the United states. Taking our present position and our future certainties into account we do not think it the least exaggeration to say that the Cana Dian West is As favored a land As there is on Earth. Year the new York life paid to its policy holders in dividends Over or. Morgan and new York life policy holders May Well be pleased with the statement of a prosperous year so seasonably presented by president Mccall. Cron ded with orders from Tho Home Market. The foreign goods in his own line that Are sold in Canada do not trouble him he is Busy up to the limit of his capacity. Still he holds by the Fetich of the Home Market theory or As he prefers to put it. In a Guise Canada for the he state in it a Light is a. Staunch believer in the idea that j they be it is the first of a. Government to make the manufacturing industries of the country at All times yield hand some profits Aud if the Home demand begins to fall off he protests Long and loud against any foreign goods toeing allowed to come in. And de Manur. Some of them have already been examined and except in one or two instances punctures had by invade in the tin with edly or not not con tents were found to be absolutely sound. It is not improbable that in examination by impartial experts of the tins of beef still in the depart ment May be ordered to demonstrate that the Ciu Swity of their contents is unimpeachable. It is Only a Short time since a Canadian firm received from South Africa a very Large order for canned meat coupled with the stipulation that it must be up to the Standard previously supplied. This goes to show that Canadian canned meat has met with great favor in our sister Dominion across the seas rather than dissatisfaction. Used for eight years. I have used or. But to refuse business merely because it is not Home business is not his Ivay. He knows that there Are fluctuations in All the markets and his constant Endeavor is to make up in one place what shrinkage or demand May be in. Another. He Organ his Industry not on the basis of the number of people there May be in his own country but on the size of the demand he can find anywhere and everywhere for the article he Lias to sell. His Industry not his country is his unit business. With us it is different. We recognize As a dim a Sti action that it is a Good thing to have ships going to South Africa if the government Wiir graciously pay them for running hut it is none of our con-1 whether they carry any goods so Long As business is Good at Home in a Tariff that secures us the mar feet at a time when others Are not particularly anxious to Bieak into it. When i they become so we can clamber for a still higher Tariff and begin to work up Trad with South Africa at a loss. Tiit is a lat happens when people frankly and honestly adopting the Diorec zionist theory set themselves to building industries under its Aegis. It always has happened it always will form knows that instead of by ing willing to extend the present British preference they hold that it is Al j ready too extensive and they would i abolish it because it is i with their policy of adequate pro j t j Canadian manuf. Our j said at can seize that Canada would have to go much farther in the Way of a British preference before great Bri Tain could begin to think of making a return. If or. Borden had been in sir Wilfrid Laurier s place at the con Ference this announcement of the col onial Secretary s would have put him out of business. One 151 the events of 1903 will be the ejection of the Roblin government. The electors of Mani Toba it must be remembered never chose or. Roblin to reign Over them. On the occasions when he offered him self As a prospective prime minister the people registered a most emphatic protest. Or. Koblin obtained Power by a party Cabal and the results of his management have been such As to make it Clear that the electors knew what they were about when in years past they voted to keep him out of office. But or. Roblin can not continue to be Premier of Mani Toba for another twelve months Smtth out securing the consent of the teaching stockmen the Winter Fains am now a great educational Factor. George h. Greig Secretary of the live Stock association returned yesterday from the in connection with the work of the association he visited the great International live Stock exposition at Chicago the on Tario Stair and fat Stock. Show at Guelph and the maritime Winter fair at Amherst. . The Canadian Winter fairs which while liberally subsidized by the various local govern ments and by the towns in which they Are located Are practically under the control of the live Stock associations and great attention is Given to the development of educational features. As each class of Stock is judged the experts who place the awards give explanations As to the desirable and undesirable qualities of various animals. After being judged alive the animals Are slaughtered and another set of expert judges pass upon t in carcasses and explanations Are then Given upon the various qualities of the carcasses As demanded by the Consumers Market. The provincial Vrin ror poultry a How Are Aiso held in conjunction with the Stock shows and a very interesting and instructive feature in this connection is the exhibit of dressed poultry. Poultry pointers. The poultry experts of the Dominion department of agriculture were in at Tendance and gave Short talks explaining the methods of plucking and packing fowls for the local and Export markets. A Large auditorium is provided in both the Ontario and maritime Winter fair buildings and lectures Are de Levored by prominent agricultural speakers. These meetings were All very largely attended and the wonder Ful Benefit of these truly educational fairs is demonstrated by the Large at Tendance and the marked improve ment that is taking place in the live Stock Industry and development of the Canadian Export Trade in agricultural products.
